Lionel Richie review – larger-than-life legend delivers a lesson in charm

'Come to hear me sing?' Lionel Richie teases. 'Not gonna happen!' His Say Hello to the Hits tour couldn't be a clearer invitation to croon along with a true great, and from natural opener Hello, a loud and proud audience seizes that chance. A video montage of Richie's 50-year career and perfect 'tache drives the point home. Tonight is about legacy – not just the Grammys and multi-platinum hits which made Richie's name, but the way that songs such as Truly and the Commodores' Three Times a Lady have become intertwined with people's lives. 'I'll just fit myself in best I can,' he booms, laughing. He has joyful chemistry with his band, and together they put plenty of polish on Richie's trophy cabinet of hits. Dancing on the Ceiling is glittery and buoyant, veering into Van Halen's Jump before some surprisingly gritty guitar shredding. Brick House is raw and funky, with Richie slinking left to right with the band in tow, like a matured T-Birds. Sometimes the band (and the audience) overpower his glorious, buttery voice, but he ad-libs and riffs and ends every song with a proud, showbizzy 'yeah!' – even tender, cinematic ballads such as Endless Love. Perhaps that montage skirted dangerously close to an In Memoriam – lots of dry ice, photos of Richie looking angelic against a night sky – but, at 75, the man himself is larger than life. He puts in a tight five between most songs, riffing on Scotland's bad weather, and implores the audience to feel empathy for refugees and immigrants: 'Those people, they're us,' he urges. 'You would do the same for your family.' This Hits tour shows us Richie on cruise control, but radiant nonetheless. He struts up and down the thrust stage, laser-focused on making the furthest corners of the Hydro feel special, and if anyone's earned the right to lean on charm, surely it's Richie. Tonight feels breezy rather than electric, and even a soaring, hip-shaking encore of All Night Long is homely rather than thrilling. A night of few fireworks, perhaps, but full of deep love and mutual appreciation. Such worn-in comfort takes decades to get just right. Lionel Richie's Say Hello to the Hits tours the UK and Europe until August

‘Excuse me': Brooke Shields unleashes on ‘precious' Meghan Markle after ‘rude' encounter on South by Southwest panel

Model and actress Brooke Shields has spoken out about the viral moment she dared to interrupt Meghan Markle during an awkward onstage encounter. The Duchess of Sussex and the Blue Lagoon star were both tapped to sit on a panel marking International Woman's Day at the prestigious South by Southwest Festival last year. During the appearance, Markle referenced the time she wrote a letter to Procter and Gamble as a child asking them to gender-neutralise a dishwashing soap commercial. The story has been repeated multiple times, including during Meghan Markle's Vanity Fair cover story she negotiated after she began dating Prince Harry. In a twist, Vanity Fair later deleted the anecdote from their piece after the magazine's fact checkers were unable to substantiate Markle's version of events. Shields, 60, opened up about her decision to cut off Markle's favourite story during a podcast interview hosted by King Charles' goddaughter India Hicks. 'Meghan said, 'I didn't think only women wash dishes,'' Shields recalled. 'It wasn't fair. So I wrote to the company. And when I was 11, I wrote my first letter and when I was 11...' and she kept saying she was 11!" The entertainment industry veteran sensed that Markle's oft-repeated story about writing letters to a detergent company was hardly riveting for the audience. "It was just too precious," Shields explained to as to why she decided to chime in. "And I was like, they're not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious.' The Endless Love star explained that she did not intend to be 'rude' to the ex-working royal but wanted to lighten the mood after Markle's earnest story. "Excuse me, I'm so sorry. I've got to interrupt you there for one minute,' she said. "I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be funny because it was so serious. "I just want to give everybody here a context as to how we're different," she told the crowd.' The actress then pointed out to Markle how when she was the same age she was playing a prostitute - referring to her controversial role in the 1978 film, Pretty Baby - which drew immediate laughter from the audience. "The place went insane. And then luckily, it was more relaxed after that," Shields said.

'I will never stop': Tom Cruise intends to keep making movies into his 100s , Entertainment News

The 62-year-old actor has no plans of slowing down, following the release of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, and Tom has revealed that he doesn't have any intention of ever retiring from the film business. The actor — who previously said he wanted to keep making films into his 80s, like his inspiration Harrison Ford — told The Hollywood Reporter: "I'm going to make them into my 100s. "I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I'm excited." Tom made his film debut in the 1981 romantic drama, Endless Love, before he enjoyed a career breakthrough in 1986's Top Gun. The actor has starred in the Mission: Impossible film franchise since 1996 and remains passionate about making movies. Recalling his "exceptional" experience of making the films, Tom said: "There's been so many levels of reward with the filmmakers that I've collaborated with, the crews, the people, the cultures that we've worked in. "Everything that I've learned and continue to learn about storytelling, about life, about leadership, about character and every aspect of filmmaking. "It's been exceptional, it really is exceptional. I feel very fortunate to be able to make the films that I make, and I love it, I just making movies." Tom has filmed countless stunts for the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the actor has revealed that he's developed a series of "pre-stunt rituals" in a bid to "keep [him] alive". The veteran movie star — who is one of the best-paid actors in Hollywood — shared: "There's a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive — it depends on what I'm doing and the amount of preparation I have to do. "A lot of thought goes into it, and they are very complex and very interesting." Tom famously hung off a military plane in the opening scene of 2015's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, and he's performed numerous aerial sequences in the money-spinning film series. Tom previously revealed that he has to be fuelled with energy before he does his stunts, explaining that he'll eat "almost a dozen" eggs with bacon and sausages and down several cups of coffee before the cameras start rolling. Speaking to People magazine, Tom shared: "I actually eat a massive breakfast. "The amount of energy it takes — I train so hard for that wing-walking. "I'll eat, like, sausage and almost a dozen eggs and bacon and toast and coffee and fluids. "Oh, I'm eating! Picture: It's cold up there. We're at high altitude. My body is burning a lot." Kendrick Lamar And SZA's 'Luther' Spends 10th Week At No. 1 On Billboard Hot 100

Kendrick Lamar and SZA have officially made history with their soul-stirring track 'Luther,' which just clinched its 10th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This milestone now marks Lamar's sixth chart-topping hit and SZA's third. The song — which honors and samples the late, legendary Luther Vandross — is more than just a love letter to the R&B icon, but a continuous celebration of the magic that the two artists have created together. Not only have they reached this elongated milestone, but 'Luther' has also become the first song by a solo man and woman (with no accompanying acts) to rule for double-digit weeks. In fact, it has surpassed the nine-week reign of Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's 1981 duet 'Endless Love' and joined the likes of Diddy and Faith Evans' 'I'll Be Missing You' and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 'One Sweet Day.' Elsewhere, 'Luther' maintains the No. 1 spot for the 18th consecutive week on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. This makes Lamar's seventh No. 1 on each chart and SZA's fourth, with her first No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. To further embody the warmth of the track, K. Dot recently released the highly anticipated visual for 'Luther,' which received direction from Karena Evans. The video sees both Kendrick and SZA immersed in their own worlds with their own love interests as the two move through the same setting, but in separate, beautifully crafted realities. The visual comes full circle, closing with a heartfelt cover of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 'If This World Were Mine,' as performed by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn — a perfect homage to the track's roots. SZA shared her thoughts on the collaboration while recently visiting the Sherri Show. 'He's such a genius, and part of his genius is him being so elusive, and so mysterious, and I love it,' she told Sherri Shepherd. 'I don't know what's going on as much as you don't know what's going on. When 'Luther' came on, I said, 'OK, that's the vocals we're using, period,' and same with 'Gloria.' I said, 'OK,' and I love that.' Revisit Kendrick Lamar and SZA's 'Luther' video above.
