Broncos roster: Evan Engram (No. 1) adds 'Joker' to offense

Broncos roster: Evan Engram (No. 1) adds 'Joker' to offense Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at ninth-year tight end Evan Engram, No. 1. Before the Broncos: Engram (6-3, 240 pounds) entered the league as a first-round pick out of Ole Miss with the New York Giants in 2017. He spent the first five years of his career in New York, hauling in 262 receptions for 2,828 yards and 16 touchdowns in 65 games. After a somewhat down year in 2021, Engram signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022. He then totaled 73 receptions for 766 yards and four scores in his first year in Jacksonville and was rewarded with a three-year extension. Engram had the best season of his career with the Jaguars in 2023, earning his second career Pro Bowl selection after totaling 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns. He was then limited to nine games in 2024 due to injury. Jacksonville cut Engram in March to save salary cap space. Broncos tenure: Denver coach Sean Payton spoke about adding a "Joker" to his offense this spring, and when Engram became available, it was clear that he was a perfect fit for the role. After signing a two-year deal in March, Engram will make his Bronco debut this fall. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Engram will make the team as Denver's No. 1 receiving threat at tight end. Engram will help Payton create mismatches in the offense's favor, and he'll likely emerge as a favorite target of second-year quarterback Bo Nix in 2025. Broncos TE Evan Engram looks great in these workout videos

Broncos TE Evan Engram looks great in these workout videos It looks like Evan Engram is primed for a big bounce-back season. Engram was hindered by hamstring and labrum injuries last fall that limited him to nine games with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After being cut by the Jags this spring, Engram signed a two-year, $23 million deal with the Denver Broncos, and he'll now look to return to his pre-injury form in coach Sean Payton's offense. Judging from the workout videos we've seen on social media, it certainly appears that Engram is trending in the right direction. Last month, personal wide receivers coach Drew Lieberman shared footage of Engram running routes in the Denver area on his "The Sideline Hustle" Instagram page: For an even better look at the details of Engram's work, here's a slow-mo video: TSH also shared a video showing Engram's impressive hip shift mechanics both in practice and in games: Broncos fans can't help but be excited about Engram joining the offense in 2025. In his last healthy season, the 30-year-old tight end hauled in 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns in 2023. If he can return to that kind of production in Denver, the Broncos might have landed one of the biggest steals of free agency this spring. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos coach Sean Payton excited to add mismatch tight end to offense

Broncos coach Sean Payton excited to add mismatch tight end to offense The Denver Broncos had to wait, but they eventually got their man when veteran tight end Evan Engram agreed to a two-year deal with the club this spring. After visiting the Broncos in March, Engram took a second free agent visit with the Los Angeles Chargers, then he returned home to make a decision with his wife. The 30-year-old ultimately decided to pick Denver over L.A. 'It took a little bit, in other words, the process relative to his visit and other visits," Broncos coach Sean Payton said in March. "The vision was pretty clear. Obviously, he's someone that we feel like can run and give us a passing threat on third down and [in the] red zone. I think he has good body control, and If think he is really good when he gets the ball into his hands. His run after the catch numbers, statistical-wise, have been good. "I would say with him, it was a lengthier process, kind of like the old days of free agency where a player would fly in then fly maybe to another team and usually wouldn't make it to the third team. It worked out well.' Long before Engram was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Payton had made it known publicly that he was seeking a "Joker" for his offense in 2025. Engram (6-3, 240 pounds) certainly seems to fit that description (and he has embraced it). 'I would put him in that category or that family," Payton said of Engram. "He is someone who has those skillsets. One of the things that helped us in the process of him making that decision was that role. You can talk about it, but historically speaking [and] having had players like him, I'm excited." The coach later added, "I do think we have a 'Joker,' we have a mismatch tight end that we really like." A two-time Pro Bowler, Engram hauled in 47 receptions for 365 yards and one touchdown in nine games last fall (he missed about half the season due to injury). One year earlier, Engram totaled a whopping 114 receptions for 963 yards and four scores in 2023. If he can return to that kind of production in Denver, Engram could end up being one of the NFL's top free agent signings of 2025. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos Trade Idea Lands Rams Tyler Higbee For Day 3 Pick

The Denver Broncos added Evan Engram in free agency and even a developmental tight end in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. But there is still a need to find a good backup to Engram who can contribute immediately. This trade idea has the Broncos sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for veteran tight end Tyler Higbee. The Rams' tight end is 32 years old and coming off an injured season, during which he missed the first 15 weeks of the year due to injury. Advertisement But after returning to the lineup for the Rams, Higbee was a solid role player for an offense that nearly beat the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. In the Rams' playoff game in the snow, Higbee had seven receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Higbee played in just five games for the Rams in 2024 and was a solid contributor. He had 20 receptions for 178 yards and three touchdowns in five games, including the playoffs. Since 2017, the second year in the NFL for Higbee, He's started every game he's played in for the Rams. Higbee has 119 starts across 128 games, with each non-start coming in his rookie year. Advertisement The Rams would be open to trading Higbee since he's in the final year of his contract. If traded, Higbee would save the Rams over $4 million in cap space. The Rams also spent their first pick of the 2025 draft on Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson. With Higbee on the Broncos roster, he would complement Engram as a great second tight end. Higbee can be a receiver and a blocker in the run and pass game. Adding Higbee, a tight end who can block, behind Engram is the perfect one-two punch at tight end for the Broncos. As the veteran is in the final year of his deal, Higbee could be traded for without giving up significant value. Denver Broncos' tight end concerns remain unresolved after 2025 NFL Draft despite signing Evan Engram

Broncos' tight end concerns remain unresolved after 2025 NFL Draft (Imagn Images) As the dust settles on the 2025 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos' approach to upgrading their tight end room remains a topic of concern. Despite a clear need for improvement at the position, Denver's moves suggest they may still be walking a tightrope heading into the new season. Tight end productivity was a problem — is Evan Engram the solution or just a stopgap? The Broncos' tight end corps struggled mightily in 2024, with Lucas Krull leading the group with just 19 receptions. That level of production is far from what's expected in a modern NFL offense, especially one that lacks elite wide receiver depth. In response, Denver made a splash by signing veteran Evan Engram in free agency. A former Pro Bowler, Engram posted an impressive 100 receptions in 2023. However, red flags remain. The 30-year-old missed eight games last season due to injury and has a history of durability issues. Additionally, while Engram can be a high-volume target, concerns persist about his ability to generate yards after the catch — a critical skill in Sean Payton's offense. If Engram is sidelined again, Denver could be forced to rely on a group that already proved inadequate last season. That's a troubling possibility for a team trying to build a stable foundation around a still-developing quarterback situation. Late-round flier Caleb Lohner is intriguing, but far from ready Rather than targeting tight end help early in the draft, Denver waited until the seventh round to select Caleb Lohner — a player better known for his basketball resume than football. The 6'8" Lohner played hoops at Baylor, BYU, and Utah before switching to football, where he recorded just four catches — all touchdowns — in one season. Lohner is clearly a long-term developmental project, not a plug-and-play contributor. While his size and athleticism make him an intriguing red-zone weapon, he's unlikely to offer meaningful production in 2025. Also Read: Jacksonville Jaguars' 2025 draft blunder: Skipping defensive tackle could ruin their season With the season approaching, Denver's tight end room hinges heavily on Engram staying healthy and producing at a high level. The team may look to bolster the position via late free-agent signings or post-camp roster cuts, but as of now, depth and experience remain thin. If Engram goes down, it's hard to see how the Broncos avoid falling back into the same offensive rut. The potential is there — but so are the risks.
