Loving Giving Local: Erie Cancer Wellness Center
If you're in a fight against cancer, doctors and nurses at your local cancer center help you with the medical journey. Many of your other needs during and after treatment can be found at the Erie Cancer Wellness Center. Jackie Wassel. Executive Director said, 'What we do is really just fill the need for mind, body, spirit support. We have anything from education resources, wellness and movement classes. We have nutrition education, reiki, massage, you name it. Community. Really, a safe space for people to come so they're not alone on this journey. ' The Cancer Wellness Center is a calm, attractive space that offers recreational and educational opportunities, a library, a room for children, a space for exercise and movement classes, and even a wig salon providing dozens of options for those who need hair. The cancer wellness center also offers group therapy and has a space that many organizations use for that. All the services available here are available to cancer patients and their families free of charge. Wassel said, 'There is already a huge financial burden on those that are faced with cancer, and we want to make sure they have no other worries as far as costs go here. And luckily, we have a very generous community that provides us with the support to continue this great work. This week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Ctr will be used for something new coming to the Wellness Center, programming specifically for men. 'They are a population that is difficult,' Wassel suggested. 'Ya know, difficult to serve and bring in, so we're hoping to expand that.' In making his donation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local and learn all that they do, not only for the patient going through cancer but the family members to help them along their journey, so for us to be able to bring that donation today and to learn that it's going to one of their men programs to help men with cancer and family of men with cancer, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about and we're excited to be able to be here and bring this donation.' Erie Community Foundation celebrates 90 years serving the community
The erie community foundation is celebrating 90 years and today its leader had the opportunity to share its impact as well as its hopes for the future. There was standing room only Friday afternoon for the foundation's president and CEO's presentation at the Jefferson Educational Society. Annual Boat & Fish Show docks at Erie's bayfront Karen Bilowith spoke about the organization's mission to inspire, engage and empower donors and communities making an impact in our region. She added that it's impossible to know how the region will evolve and what its future needs will be, but said the community foundation is committed to supporting those needs. Bilowith hopes individuals will continue to give to their community… Especially as we enter a time of tremendous transfer of wealth from baby boomers to the next generation. Grover Cleveland students collect 4,000 books for needy kids 'It's really the individual donors throughout the community, 500 nonprofits, 10,000 donors on Erie Gives Day, they all come together and collectively make a difference and we really need to be able to leverage that so we can continue to do work over the next decade or decades,' she said. LGL: Harbor Creek School District Foundation
Students and staff in the Harbor Creek School District are benefitting from this week's Loving Giving Local Donation. This week, Joe Askins of Auto Express wrote a check to the Harbor Creek School District Foundation. 'Harborcreek School District Foundation benefits our staff and students wholeheartedly. Students scholarships are part of that opportunity in the tem fields, field trips. And then our staff benefits from mini-grants that we give out from the foundation and donations from our community,' said Dr. Buckley Cook, superintendent of the Harbor Creek School District. The foundation was established as a way for the community to become stakeholders in the Harbor Creek School District. It provides schools with a financial base to fund worthwhile projects that would not normally be funded through the school district's budget. Foundation funding comes from a variety of sources. 'Erie Gives Day is a big one for us, but lots of donations come in throughout the year directly to the foundation,' Dr. Cook said. This week a check for $250 dollars from Loving Giving Local and Auto Express. 'We know that donation is going to stay right here in the community and it's going to benefit the students of Harborcreeki School District.
