Thiel College Fraternity Mourns the Passing Away of 21-Year-Old Rising Senior

Toby Atwood, a student-athlete from Armstrong County, tragically passed away on July 20th after collapsing during the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie. The event, hosted by the Erie Runners Club, turned somber as the news spread of Toby's sudden passing. The exact cause of the 21-year-old's passing has not yet been determined, but the impact of her loss is deeply felt by classmates, teammates, and all who knew her. Toby Atwood: A Student With Many Crown Jewels Thiel College shared that Atwood was an exceptional student and leader in every sense. She was double majoring in business administration and accounting, and had earned one of the college's prestigious full scholarship awards. Despite her busy schedule, she maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was a member of the class of 2026 and was also the co-captain of the women's tennis team and served as president of the Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity. The 21-year-old was also a member of the National College Honor Society and was recently inducted into Chi Eta Sigma, an honorary society for excellence in commerce. Tributes Pour In After Toby Atwood's Death The Vice President for Student Life and Athletics, Michael McKinney, said in a message to the campus community, 'Her presence touched the lives of so many, and she will be deeply missed. During this heartbreaking time, we mourn for Toby and extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends, classmates, teammates, coach, instructors, and all who knew her.' Toby's brother, Jaret, spoke to Pittsburgh's Action News 4 and said, She was, without a doubt, the best sister there was. She was all of our best friends – my brother, my mom, everyone's best friend in our family.' He added, 'She was the hardest-working, most determined person anybody would ever meet. Anybody she ever met, she left an impact on — whether it was for one day or you knew her for 21 years.' Standout college tennis player, 21, collapses and dies during half marathon

A 21–year–old college tennis player died tragically during a half marathon in Pennsylvania last weekend. Toby Atwood of Armstrong County was a student–athlete at Thiel College – a private university in Greenville, Pennsylvania. While running the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie on Sunday, Atwood suddenly collapsed and died. The event was organized by the Erie Runners Club. After collapsing, the college senior was rushed to UPMC Hamot hospital in Erie. Atwood later died in the hospital's emergency room, and her death was determined to be 'cardiac–related,' according to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook. Atwood was a member and co–captain of her college's women's tennis team. 'Her presence touched the lives of so many, and she will be deeply missed,' Thiel College Vice President for Student Life and Athletics Michael McKinney said in a news release. 'During this heartbreaking time, we mourn for Toby and extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends, classmates, teammates, coach, instructors, and all who knew her.' 'Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends,' the post said. According to race officials, 1,323 people registered for the half marathon, which consists of loops around Presque Isle State Park. No other injuries were reported after Sunday's 13.1 mile race. Atwood was a business administration and accounting double major, and she maintained a 4.0 average while holding the number one position on the women's tennis team. According to her obituary, Atwood also worked as a bartender at the Wick City Saloon and served as President of Student Athletics. 'She enjoyed working out at the gym and running, she was the best candy salad maker. Toby loved Chipotle and Toby Keith,' her obituary said. 'Toby was the best daughter, sister, and friend. She had the brightest light. Toby was successful in everything she did, the world was a better place with her in it. She was beautiful, funny, smart, strong, and a beautiful human being, she will never be forgotten,' the obituary continued. 'She enjoyed working out at the gym and running, she was the best candy salad maker. Toby loved Chipotle and Toby Keith,' her obituary said Atwood was a business administration and accounting double major, and she maintained a 4.0 average while holding the number one position on the women's tennis team According to her obituary, Atwood also worked as a bartender at the Wick City Saloon and served as President of Student Athletics Atwood is not the first young and athletic person to pass away after competing in running events. In June, two 24–year–old Irish athletes – Olivia Tuohy and Ellen Cassidy – tragically died within a week of each other after competing in separate half marathons in Scotland and Ireland. Back in May, former Minnesota football player Charles Rogers died after going into cardiac arrest during the Brooklyn Half Marathon. Also in May, 28-year-old runner Jon Devereux died after collapsing during the Great Bristol Run half marathon in England.

Kittanning woman dies during Sunday's Erie Half Marathon

An Armstrong County woman died during the July 20 Erie Half Marathon. Witnesses reported that Toby Atwood, 21, of Kittanning collapsed between the 10- and 11-mile markers of the 13.1-mile race. Off-duty personnel performed CPR before emergency personnel rushed her to UPMC Hamot. Atwood was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. From 2023: 'I just wanted to hug him': TV show reunites Presque Isle cardiac arrest victim, rescuers Hospital personnel notified Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook about Atwood. No autopsy was performed, but Cook said he was informed she died from a cardiac incident. 'We're really sad and overwrought,' Erie Runners Club president Dave Comi said. 'You stand out in the rain for hours to help the people (who are competing). There's nothing you can do about a natural occurrence, but it's still not right.'
