Kota Kinabalu: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has hailed the RM31 billion three-phase project by Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd as a major milestone for the state's economic development. He said it would generate jobs, foster innovation and support local businesses. Speaking at the launch of the project's Phase 1 at the Sabah International Convention Centre yesterday, Hajiji thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore-based Green Esteel Group for backing Sabah's industrial ambitions. 'This project is not merely a financial commitment. It is a vote of your confidence in our vision and in our capacity to foster growth and development,' he said in his speech. Hajiji added that the steel manufacturing plant, located in the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip), is expected to create a wide range of 'ripple effects' in sectors such as green technology and local entrepreneurship. He said job creation must benefit Sabahans first and urged industry players to prioritise the training and upskilling of the local workforce. Advertisement 'I want all industry players to invest in the training and development of our local workforce and to comply with this fundamental requirement as a core principle of our commitment to local development,' he said. Hajiji also credited more than a dozen federal and state agencies for their role in fast-tracking approvals for the Esteel project and assured the group that their 'trust is well-placed'. 'Together, we have the potential to achieve remarkable outcomes, leading the way for growth and development,' he said. Hajiji reaffirmed that Sabah will maintain its investor-friendly stance, noting that the state has implemented policies to attract more investors. 'We are committed to creating a conducive environment that nurtures investments and fosters collaboration,' he said, adding that besides Sogip, the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park has also seen increased tenancy over the past four years. Due to high investor demand, Hajiji said the state government had approved three new industrial parks in Kota Belud, Beaufort and Kudat under its Blue Economy initiative. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia to continue negotiations with US on tariffs, says Anwar

Anwar speaking at the launch of Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd Phase 1 on Friday. KOTA KINABALU (May 30): Malaysia maintains its stance on negotiation to resolve the issue of tariffs imposed by the administration of US President Donald Trump. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said negotiations are crucial to ensuring strong Malaysia-US bilateral relations, as the US is Malaysia's third-largest trading partner after Singapore and China. 'We live in challenging times where we face significant direct and indirect impacts from the tariffs announced by the US. However, let's look at this positively — we will continue negotiations because the US is a key investor in Malaysia. American investments are among the highest in Malaysia, and we must maintain good relations with them,' he said at the launch of Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd (Esteel) Phase 1 on Friday. Anwar stressed that Malaysia's position is also important to ensure that any trade agreements or tariffs are fair and comply with international laws. 'I will meet with US officials and also Singaporean President Lawrence Wong to discuss Malaysia-Singapore dialogue, showing that both nations will maintain strong ties as key trading partners,' he explained. He added that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had also gone to the US to negotiate, presenting Malaysia's stance alongside ASEAN nations, as well as Korea, Japan, and China, which support bilateral trade relations and oppose unilateral actions.

Anwar: Federal-state collaboration to empower Sabah youth in 0&G sector

KOTA KINABALU: Collaboration between the federal and state governments in equipping Sabah's youth with skills through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the oil and gas sector is key to meeting the industry's current and future demands. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said all relevant stakeholders — particularly universities and TVET institutions — must actively support and participate in this initiative. "Our focus must now shift to Sabah's youth. Universities, TVET providers, and both state and federal agencies must be more flexible by opening up opportunities for them to enrol in TVET programmes. Take charge of parts of these programmes and begin training them immediately. "Even if they do not graduate with formal ministry-endorsed certificates, these can be company-issued qualifications tied directly to industry needs," he said. Anwar said that training should be conducted by the relevant institutions or companies themselves, ensuring it met quality standards and, more importantly, the specific requirements of targeted industries. "If a company needs 200 graduates from a particular institution to fill roles, let the company handle the training. The priority is industry readiness," he said. He made these remarks during the launch ceremony of the first phase of the EsteelEnterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd project at the Sipitang Oil & Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) chairman and SOGIP manager Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan, and Qhazanah Sabah Bhd chairman Dr Yusof Yacob. Anwar also stressed the importance of preparing the next generation of workers with proper training and early industry exposure so that they were ready to contribute meaningfully in their respective fields. "There must be no compromise. Do not burden young people with excessive bureaucracy or technical red tape. You must prioritise their future," he said.

Train young Sabahans to become highly skilled in O&G sector

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged oil and gas (O&G) industry players to play a role in training more young Sabahans, both at the university level and through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, to address the sector's workforce needs. Anwar emphasised that such training is vital to ensure that young workers in the O&G sector meet the set standards and requirements, becoming highly skilled workers, thereby reducing mismatches in the industry. He also called on state and federal government agencies to be more flexible in allowing individuals to enter the field even without formal certificates. 'Let them undergo training and ensure that the training meets the industry's standards and requirements,' he said when officiating the launch ceremony of the RM6.4 billion Phase One Esteel project here, today. Also present was Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The three-phase project, worth RM31 billion and undertaken by Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park, represents a promising development for Sabah as the state advances in unlocking its full potential. Anwar stressed the importance of providing appropriate training, including opportunities for young Sabahans to enhance their skills outside the state, before returning as qualified professionals such as engineers or technicians. For instance, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), the national oil and gas company, is providing comprehensive skills training focused primarily on the sector, the prime minister noted. 'Do not compromise. Think about the future of your students—they will be better prepared to serve the industry,' he added. Meanwhile, Anwar highlighted that Malaysia's political stability and clarity in economic policies have boosted investor confidence, contributing to the country's success in attracting foreign investment across various sectors. He also pointed out that the efficiency and transparency of civil servants in executing their duties are important in ensuring there are no bureaucratic obstacles hindering development projects. 'Investors are confident because of political stability, clear policies—especially economic policies—and effective execution at the ground level in project approvals,' he added.
