Kaizer Chiefs news: Home affairs clearance and Velebayi in the lineup

The wait is almost over. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ethan Chislett, signed from Port Vale in England, has edged closer to starting his Betway Premiership career. The 26-year-old is one of the Amakhosi's standout signings after turning down interest from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Despite playing in attacking midfield, the new Kaizer Chiefs number 23 scored 40 goals in 242 games in English football. Orlando Pirates news: Another player gone and Saleng finds love Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach, Cedric Kaze, confirmed that midfielder Chisllet finally got his work permit. 'Ethan is available for selection after his paper has been resolved,' Kaze told the media before facing Polokwane City on Wednesday. The Betway Premiership giants have announced Asanele Velebayi from Cape Town Spurs. Kaizer Chiefs will soon introduce Velebayi on the field rather than the media. How does the former Cape Town Spurs superstar fit in? To keep things simple, we've taken the same lineup that beat Polokwane City 1-0 in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday. The only change is that Velebayi will come in on the left wing for Gaston Sirino, who had a bad night. The 22-year-old winger, who can play on either wing or the attacking midfield role, is likely to compete for minutes on the left wing. Brandon Petersen – Goalkeeper Thabiso Monyane – Right back Inacio Miguel – Right central defender Aden McCarthy – Left central defender Bradley Cross – Left back Sibongiseni Mthethwa – Defensive midfielder Thabo Cele – Central midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala – Attacking midfielder Glody Lilepo – Right winger Asanele Velebayi – Left winger Wandile Duba – Striker. Siphsihle Ndlovu strike downs Polokwane City as Kaizer Chiefs' continue perfect league start

While Chiefs are seemingly cruising, Rise and Shine are enduring a slow start to the season and haven't scored in their opening three matches. Polokwane lost their opening game to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 quarter-final and drew 0-0 with Magesi in their league opener on Saturday. With some of the new signings — Ethan Chislett, Nkanyiso Shinga, and Flavio Silva — still awaiting the finalisation of their paperwork, the team could yet become even stronger. It's still early days in the new season — the league is contested over 30 matches — but Chiefs are showing strong signs of improvement from last season's campaign. Chiefs have now won both matches since the start of the Betway Premiership season, and are yet to concede, having beaten Stellenbosch 2-0 on Sunday. Siphesihle Ndlovu's solitary goal handed Kaizer Chiefs all three points as they beat Polokwane City 1-0 at a chilly FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Escape will cancel and close the window. Having kept three clean sheets and scored seven goals in his last three matches in charge, Khalil Ben Youssef was looking for his fourth consecutive win here. And he achieved just that. The Chiefs assistant coach, who is holding the fort for head coach Nasreddine Nabi — currently back home due to a family emergency — guided the side to a 1-0 win over City. Youssef's team produced a controlled performance, although the match lacked fluidity due to frequent stoppages during much of the first half. He did his best to fire up his players, staying on his feet throughout both halves and barking instructions from the touchline. The Chiefs players needed that wake-up call early on, as they started sluggishly, allowing Rise and Shine plenty of time and space on the ball. The visitors, however, failed to capitalise on the freedom they were afforded, with their best chance coming when Manuel Kambala forced a brilliant save from Brandon Petersen. Youssef's instructions seemed to pay off as Chiefs began playing with more vigour, taking the game to the visitors with some excellent passages of play. But for all their slick build-up, Chiefs still lacked the crucial cutting edge in the final third, often losing possession too easily. So when Youssef replaced Mduduzi Shabalala with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo — who scored a beautiful set-piece against Stellenbosch — at half-time, it came as no surprise. Ngcobo tried his best to spark the team going forward, but Chiefs still struggled in attack, continuing to surrender possession cheaply. The problem extended beyond the forwards, as Youssef's decision to replace right-back Thabiso Monyane with Reeve Frosler was met with loud boos from the stands. Amakhosi fans did, however, find a moment of joy when Paseka Mako made his debut to loud chants and cheers. Mako was signed during the ongoing transfer window after leaving Chiefs' neighbours, Orlando Pirates, where he won multiple trophies. That excitement grew moments later when Siphesihle Ndlovu, making only his second appearance of the season, made it count with a goal. Ndlovu struck from close range after City's poor defending allowed a loose ball to fall kindly for Frosler, who teed him up perfectly. The 28-year-old's strike was enough to hand Chiefs all three points, keeping their early-season dream alive under Youssef's guidance.

Kaizer Chiefs ready for a pivotal campaign as they kick-off the Betway Premiership against Stellenbosch without coach Nasreddine Nabi

DURBAN-born Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ethan Chislett one of the expected players to show status. | BackpagePix Image: BACKPAGEPIX Kaizer Chiefs will enter a make-or-break season under coach Nasreddine Nabi, which is why the players need to blend quickly and hit the ground running. Chiefs finished ninth in the Betway Premiership last season, a disappointing result given their high hopes for the campaign. So despite winning the Nedbank Cup and ending their 10-year trophy drought, there were still calls for Nabi to be sacked. However, the management decided to retain the Tunisia-born coach, backing him with adequate preparations and squad depth. Video Player is loading. The club also strengthened the squad with six new players: Siphesihle Ndlovu, Ethan Chislett, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Flavio Silva, and Nkanyiso Shinga. Silva, however, faced criticism for his performances in the Netherlands, as the Portugal-born striker appeared out of sorts in the final third. Nabi said he was surprised to hear such reports and has backed the 29-year-old to adapt in time. 'I was a little surprised to hear about the negative comments, but as long as the player has signed for Kaizer Chiefs, it's our duty to work with him,' Nabi said. 'We also have to give him time to adapt. That doesn't only apply to Flavio but to anyone new, which is why I won't single him out. 'We need to put other players in the same bracket, including the younger ones coming from the DStv Diski Challenge team.' After Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Wandile Duba showed flashes of brilliance last season, Nabi has backed the youngsters to grow in leaps and bounds this year. 'We believe that the competition those players are going to face will make them better and improve their performances,' Nabi said. 'Without competition, young players sometimes lose focus, and after a few months, they won't be consistent. 'But we are going to need everyone to step up and raise their hands this season, not just Duba or Shabalala. 'We are going to need Naledi (Hlongwane), Thulani (Mabaso), and Matlaba (Nkgwesa) because of the developments this season.' Coach Update We regret to inform our supporters that Coach Nasreddine Nabi will not be traveling with the team to Cape Town for our opening game of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Stellenbosch FC this #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 8, 2025
