FAW creates murals to celebrate Cymru women's football team

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has launched the scheme to celebrate the achievements of the Cymru women's national team. The murals are part of a campaign celebrating the team's first-ever qualification for a major international tournament, the UEFA Women's EURO 2025. Created by local artists and installed at schools and football clubs across Wales, each mural honours a player from the squad and the communities that shaped them. Louise Burgess, FAW Euro 2025 project lead, said: "We want our history-making players to be celebrated and become household names, not just in the football world, but in the places that made them who they are. "These murals are about the importance of legacy and a celebration of Welsh creativity, culture and community. "They highlight the power of place and the vital importance of visibility for women in sport and society." The project is funded by the Welsh Government's Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund. Murals have begun appearing since late June, with more installations planned throughout the summer. A headteacher at one of the mural locations, Sarah Jane Jones, said: "Women in sport should be celebrated, and we are proud to be a part of this campaign."

Murals, films and poems celebrate Wales' Women's Euro 2025

Wales' debut at the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, taking place in Switzerland, is being celebrated through a series of cultural projects supported by the Welsh Government's £1 million Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund. Jess Fishlock, Wales' most capped footballer, is honoured in a full-size pitch mural. Ms Fishlock said: "It's a huge honour to represent Cymru and to be part of a first-of-its-kind mural celebrating our history-making appearance at the Euros." The mural, designed by Welsh artist Regan Gilflin and Cardiff studio UNIFY, is located in Splott Football Park. Elsewhere, Literature Wales has commissioned poet Sarah McCreadie to accompany the team and produce 14 original poems capturing their Euro journey. A short film by director Aaliyah MacKay tells the story of Eleeza and Rosheen Khan, Wales' first female Muslim referees and coaches. Ms MacKay said: "At the heart of this project are questions of equality, diversity and inclusion." Culture and sport minister Jack Sargeant will travel to Switzerland to support the team. Mr Sargeant said: "This weekend marks a watershed moment for Welsh football as our women's national team takes to the pitch for their first ever European Championship."

£1 million fund launched ahead of women's Euro 2025 campaign

A £1 million support fund has been launched ahead of Cymru women's first European championship football appearance later this year. On Saturday, July 5, the team will make history when they face the Netherlands for their first game at the UEFA Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland. The Welsh Government and partner organisations have established the Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund to harness the opportunity to inspire future generations and boost sports participation. The fund will provide grants to organisations across the culture, arts, sport, and media sectors. Projects could include opportunities to promote Wales internationally, youth sports engagement, and fan celebration events across Wales, Europe, and the world. Jack Sargeant, minister for sport, said: "Cymru women's historic Euro 2025 qualification is a unique opportunity to build upon the growing momentum in women's and girls' football across our nation. "We're committing this £1 million to boost participation in sport across our communities and showcase Wales on the international stage. "By bringing together partners from across multiple sectors, we're taking a collaborative 'Gorau chwarae, cyd chwarae' approach to create a lasting legacy from this tournament. "This fund will use the invaluable expertise of a range of organisations to support and enhance our already-planned programme of activities, projecting our collective strength as a nation, as a Team Wales that is stronger together." Noel Mooney, Football Association of Wales' CEO, said: "The historic qualification of Cymru for this summer's Euro 2025 brings huge opportunities, not just for the team but for our nation as a whole. "With the team putting Wales on the world stage in Switzerland, we have the potential to come together to celebrate, to challenge negative gender stereotypes and to boost participation in football at all levels. "We want everyone across Cymru to be able to feel a part of this extraordinary moment, no matter where they are, and this fund will help to make that vision a reality." Initial expressions of interest should be submitted by Friday, March 7. Final decisions will be announced by Friday, April 18.
