Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates compete in free dance on the way to a third straight ice dance world title (Maddie Meyer) Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates dazzled again in the free dance to become the first duo in 28 years to win a third straight ice dance world title on Saturday. Leading by 3.74 points after the rhythm dance, the Americans captivated in their jazz-themed free skate, scoring 131.88 points for a total of 222.06. Advertisement Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, who beat Chock and Bates at the Four Continents Championships in February, skated a superb free dance to "A Whiter Shade of Pale," scoring 130.10 for a total of 216.54. They added another world silver to the one they captured on home ice in Montreal last year after winning bronze in 2021 and 2023. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Britain were third, garnering 123.25 points for their free dance to a medley of Beyonce hits for a total of 207.11. Chock and Bates, who have skated together since 2011 and were married last year, are the first ice dancers to win three successive world titles since Russia's Oksana Grishuk and Evgeni Platov won four from 1994-97. gif/bb/js

This week, 200 of the best figure skaters in the world will gather in Boston for the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. The event comes just two months after the figure skating community lost 14 members in the deadly plane crash in D.C.. There are plans to honor those lost with a remembrance ceremony on Wednesday night. This is the first worlds held on U.S. soil since 2016, and the World Figure Skating Championships one year prior to the Winter Olympics have more weight, so for Team USA, the pressure is certainly on. Defending champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates could become the first ice dancers to win their third consecutive world title in 28 years. American Amber Glenn has the world's top skater title this season, and Ilia Malinin has a chance to become the second American men's singles skater to repeat as world champion in the last 40 years. Chock and Bates could potentially become the first ice dancers to win a third consecutive world title in 28 years. Meanwhile Malinin is aiming to become the second American men's singles skater to repeat as world champion in the last 40 years (after Nathan Chen). The competition will be hosted by the renowned Skating Club of Boston, which was heavily impacted by the tragic D.C. plane crash back in January. The club lost three of its skaters in the deadly crash — Jinna Han, Spencer Lane and Olivia Ter — and two coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were also world champions in their own right. The loss is likely to be felt throughout the entire competition, by Team USA and beyond. The ISU 2025 World Figure Skating Championships will hold a remembrance ceremony for the six members of the figure skating community lost in the D.C. plane crash. The ceremony will stream on Peacock on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 6:15 p.m. ET. NBC will also re-air Legacy on Ice, a special covering the skating community's memorial gala for the lost skaters, this Sunday. Legacy on Ice featured performances by Malinin, U.S. champion Amber Glenn, 13-year-old Isabella Aparicio (skating in memory of her late brother and father) and Maxim Naumov, the son of Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.

World champions Chock and Bates of the US are 2nd behind Canadian duo in Four Continents ice dance
SEOUL, South Korea — Two-time and reigning world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States finished just one point behind Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada in rhythm dance at the figure skating Four Continents competition on Thursday. Skating to a medley of music that included 'Rock Around the Clock' and 'Stayin' Alive,' Chock and Bates produced an energetic routine that received 86.21 points to temporarily move into first place. But defending champions Gilles and Poirier, the last skaters to take the ice, scored 87.22 points for their upbeat routine to a medley of surf music. Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha, also of Canada, finished third with 82.86.
