Snow White rated among worst movies on IMDb with 1.7/10
Disney's live-action Snow White has faced a rough debut, both commercially and critically. The film opened globally with just USD 87 million, well below expectations, and USD 43 million of that came from domestic ticket sales. This has raised concerns about its performance in a highly competitive market of Disney remakes. The film has been hit hard online, with coordinated review bombing efforts flooding the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), where it now holds a dismal 1.7/10 rating. While the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is slightly higher at 74 percent, critics have given it a harsh 44 percent, placing Snow White among the lowest-rated live-action Disney adaptations. Compared to other successful Disney remakes, Snow White's performance is concerning. For example, The Lion King opened with USD 191 million, and Beauty and the Beast grossed USD 174 million in their domestic debuts. Even Dumbo managed to make USD 46 million, surpassing Snow White's USD 43 million. Critics have pointed to several flaws in the film, such as a weak script, uninspired direction, and controversial computer-generated imagery (CGI) dwarf characters. Gal Gadot's portrayal of the Evil Queen has drawn sharp criticism, with many feeling she was miscast and failed to bring the necessary menace to the role. On the other hand, Rachel Zegler's performance as Snow White, especially her singing, has been one of the few bright spots. Talentless IDF Soldier Gal Gadot cant act. People need to WAKE UP to see how BAD her acting really is. Boycott Snow White — Ryan Rozbiani (@RyanRozbiani) March 25, 2025 Adding to the film's struggles, Disney's Snow White is facing a global boycott. Fans in the United Arab Emirates, among other places, have declared their intention to stay away from the film due to the political stance of Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen as reported by the National News. Gadot, a former 'Israeli' army member, has been outspoken in her support of 'Israel', particularly during the recent Gaza conflict, which has led to widespread criticism. Social media users have mocked her role in the film, calling her a "colonizer," both in the context of her character and real life. The Irony that Colonizer Gal Gadot plays a colonizer in the new Snow White movie A role she played her whole life… — Ryan Rozbiani (@RyanRozbiani) March 21, 2025 This backlash is not confined to the UAE Fans worldwide have voiced their displeasure over Gadot's views, contributing to the growing boycott movement. This adds to the movie's already poor performance at the box office and with critics. On the flip side, Rachel Zegler's portrayal of Snow White—particularly her standout singing—has been hailed as the film's saving grace, though it hasn't been enough to lift the project out of mediocrity.

Rachel Zegler celebrates ‘Snow White' being ‘#1 movie in the world' despite sleepy box office debut
Just whistle while you work. Rachel Zegler took to social media on Monday, March 24, to celebrate 'Snow White' being the weekend's top box office performer – even despite a sleepy debut and lazy ticket sales. '#1 MOVIE IN THE WORLD!' Zegler, 23, wrote alongside a photo of her dressed as the titular Disney princess while waving from a trailer on the film's set. She also included a red apple emoji and a snowflake emoji. Even though 'Snow White' came out on top at the box office over runner-ups like 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Mickey 17,' the fairy tale remake is still in trouble when considering its $270 million budget. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 'Snow White' failed to meet opening box office expectations over the weekend. While Disney reportedly hoped to clear $100 million, the live-action remake fell short and only garnered a combined domestic and international total of $87.3 million as of Sunday. Final weekend numbers are not expected to come in until late Monday. Meanwhile, the film – which opened at $43 million domestically – underperformed when compared to the $45 million domestic total it was projected to rake in. Even The Post's movie critic, Johnny Oleksinski, dubbed the live-action remake of the animated 1937 Disney classic 'boring' and 'mediocre.' 'The timeless classic, a groundbreaking achievement for animation, has been turned into another pointless and awkward live-action automaton that vanishes from your mind the second it's over,' he wrote ahead of the movie's debut weekend. The disappointing box office numbers and Zegler's optimistic Instagram post come as the film and its stars continue to be dogged by backlash and alleged behind-the-scenes drama. Not only did 'Snow White' suffer criticism for using CGI to create the film's seven dwarfs, but Zegler and her Evil Queen co-star Gal Gadot, 39 created controversy after voicing opposing views about the Israeli-Hamas conflict still unfolding in Gaza. That drama reportedly created tensions between the stars themselves, and Zegler later left Gadot out of a tribute she posted for the movie. '[Zegler] has nothing in common with Gal Gadot, a mom of four kids,' an insider told People earlier this month regarding the two 'Snow White' co-stars. 'On top of that, their political views differ, adding to the tension,' the source added. Zegler also previously came under fire for calling the original 'Snow White' movie 'dated' and 'weird.' 'The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so,' she said shortly after landing the main role in the remake. 'There's a big focus on her love story with the guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird,' the 'West Side Story' star added. 'So we didn't do that this time.' Zegler later backtracked and called the role an 'honor of a lifetime.' She also dubbed herself a 'huge Disney fan.' 'It was the honor of a lifetime. I think every young person dreams about a phone call like that,' the actress told 'Good Morning America' on March 20. 'This one is certainly extra special as a huge Disney fan.'

Disney's controversial Snow White opens to low box office numbers and scathing reviews
Disney's live-action remake of Snow White has missed box office forecasts amid a series of controversies and a flurry of negative reviews. The musical, an adaptation of the 1937 animated classic, collected $43 million in the US and Canada over the weekend, Disney said on Sunday. The film was expected to make $45 million to $55 million during its opening weekend, an already low estimate for a major production which cost an estimated $250 million to make. Snow White's sleepy opening is very different to Disney's series of live-action remakes. The Little Mermaid collected $95.5 million in 2023, while 2017's Cinderella took in $67.8 million. Dumbo, Tim Burton's take on the 1941 animated film, opened by taking in $46 million in 2019. Directed by Marc Webb, who's given Disney two blockbuster Spider-Man films, Snow White has also failed to impress critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 44 per cent rating. The Guardian called it 'toe-curlingly terrible' while The Rolling Stone said it was a strong contender for the 'blandest' live-action remake. Some reviews also criticised Disney's decision to make changes to the original story. Instead of trying to find a husband, the new Snow White leads a rebellion against the Evil Queen. And her love interest is one of the rebels, not a prince. The film has also been marred by a series of woes since it was announced in 2016, from the Covid-19 pandemic to accidents on set and criticism of its use of CGI, not real actors, to portray the seven dwarfs. The New York Times called it 'one of the most troubled projects in Disney's 102-year history.' Most recently, it's the opposing political stances of the film's main leads that have grabbed headlines. Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, has been outspoken about her support for Palestinians. Just a day after sharing the first footage from Snow White for a crowd of adoring fans last year, she posted a note of gratitude on X, ended her message with: 'And always remember, free Palestine.' In an interview with Variety in October 2024, she doubled down on her stance. 'I can't watch children die. I don't think that should be a hot take,' she said. 'I'm only responsible for what I feel. And then I'm also responsible for how I act upon it. We're nearing one year since the horrendous attacks in Israel on October 7, but I've been following this conflict for so many years.' Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, meanwhile, served two years in the IDF, and has been open about her support for her country and its policies. 'I stand with Israel you should too,' she posted on Instagram in 2023. But there's hope yet for Snow White. Last year, another Disney live-action remake, Mufasa: The Lion King, opened to only $35 million and mixed reviews, but went on to make more than $700 million globally during its theatrical run.

'Snow White' Debuts as a Low-Earning Live-Action Remake for Disney at the Opening Weekend Box Office
Snow White is off to a sleepy start at the box office. Disney's live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic debuted in theaters across North America on Friday, March 21, and earned $43 million during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The film is now one of the company's lowest-earning live-action remakes, per data from the website, which tracks box office news, analysis and data. Snow White, which cost an estimated $270 million to craft, per Forbes, was estimated to bring in $48-$58 million in its first weekend. (The film has so far made $87.3 million internationally.) Still, Snow White surpassed Black Bag, which earned $4.4 million, and fellow Disney movie, Captain America: Brave New World, which brought in $4.1 million. Related: Inside Snow White's 'Iconic' Costumes, Including the Evil Queen's 'Glamour and Sophistication' (Exclusive) Rachel Zegler plays the titular princess, while Gal Gadot is the Evil Queen in the film. Plans to remake Snow White were first announced in 2016, and Zegler, 23, was cast in the lead role in June 2021, ahead of her film debut in West Side Story. "Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale," director Marc Webb said of Zegler's casting in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. As for Gadot, 39, taking on the infamous Evil Queen, the actress previously told PEOPLE in November 2021, "I'm so excited and I cannot wait to get into the shoes and the crown of the Evil Queen." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Additional cast includes Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, Patrick Page as the voice for the mystical Magic Mirror and Tony winner Andrew Burnap as Snow White's love interest, Jonathan. Disney's reimagining of Snow White faced its fair share of backlash before being released in theaters. Ahead of the movie's premiere, Zegler chalked up criticism over the live-action remake to "passion" for the film and its characters. While speaking with Vogue Mexico, the Spellbound actress said audiences feel protective over the famous princess as well as the original 1937 animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. 'I interpret people's feelings about this film as their passion for her and what an honor to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,' Zegler said in her interview. 'We are not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us and all that we can do is do our best." (Zegler's interview was conducted in Spanish. Quotes were independently translated from Spanish to English by PEOPLE.) Following her casting announcement in 2022, Zegler also dealt with racist backlash over her playing the Disney Princess while being of Latinx background. (Zegler is of Colombian and Polish descent.) Snow White has also been called out by Peter Dinklage, who was born with a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. He accused Disney of "hypocrisy" over the upcoming film, citing the fairy tale's "backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together." Snow White is in theaters now.
