Fringe Review: Cadaver Synod a hilarious papal comedy
Cadaver Synod 4 out of 5 stars Stage 31, The Nancy Power Theatre at the Roxy, 10708 124 St. Silliness abounds in this new work by Sebastian Ley that speculates on whether a dead pope can be held responsible for purported crimes committed when he was alive. Directed by Kathleen Weiss, Cadaver Synod opens as a new pope (Michael Watt) finds himself caught between an emperor (David Ley) and a sub-deacon (Samuel Bronson) in a dispute over whether the old pope took part in dubious activities such as necromancy (something with circles, not to be confused with narcolepsy, or necrophilia, although those are also funny words). In order to put the old pope on trial to quell the clamouring masses, they dig him up and stuff his skeleton into a fancy chair for a robust inquisition on alleged transgressions. The new pope ('Call me Stephen') is uncomfortable in his role, unaccustomed to all the ring and foot-kissing that goes with the job. He harkens back to earlier days, when the sub-deacon and he were childhood friends absorbed by tender childhood rituals, including extravagant dances, which serve as a delightful source of physical comedy in the play. Cadaver Synod is brought to you by Vault Theatre, the same folks that created 638 Ways to Kill Castro — an equally absurd hit from the 2024 Fringe. Strong and hilarious performances by all three actors keep the wheels on this production, which at 75 minutes is repetitious and 15 minutes too long.
