'Hidden Stirling' uncovered in new book by city archaeologist

Archaeologist, author and Observer columnist Dr Murray Cook's latest book is set to reveal some of Stirling's hidden gems. 'Hidden Stirling: Outlawed, Unknown, Locked, Destroyed, Overlooked and Secret Gems from Scotland's Smallest City' is being released on Wednesday April 30 by local publishers Extremis. In the book, Murray unveils some lesser-known historical gems of this ancient Scottish city and its surrounding areas, offering readers a fresh perspective on its rich past. An Extremis spokesperson said: 'Explore the mysteries of some of Stirling's most celebrated buildings, from the Castle and Tolbooth to the Municipal Buildings and Golden Lion Hotel. 'Then discover the secrets of the surrounding area, where prehistoric fortifications whisper tales of ancient communities. 'Uncover the significance of the grand Church of the Holy Rude, the only surviving church in the United Kingdom apart from Westminster Abbey to have hosted a royal coronation, and unravel the enigmas of the Old Town Cemetery - a graveyard of European significance. ''Hidden Stirling' encourages you to journey beyond the familiar, revealing the city's untold tales and inviting you to see Stirling in a brand new light.' Dr Murray Cook is Stirling Council's archaeologist and has undertaken numerous excavations across the region and published over 40 books and articles. He won a Stirling's Provost Award in 2018 for his work for the council, where he has helped raise over £300,000 to be spent on community archaeology and research. He has appeared on several TV programmes and runs Stirling Archaeology, a Facebook page dedicated to Stirling's heritage. In March this year he was named the winner of the Outstanding Contribution to the City Award at the Stirling Business Awards. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at Stirling University, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, runs an occasional course as an associate lecturer at Forth Valley College in Stirling and also co-runs regular training digs open to all under the name Rampart Scotland. He runs a series of free walks, lectures and digs through the year to allow people to explore their past. Extremis Publishing Ltd, a leading independent non-fiction publisher based in Stirling, was recently named Non-Fiction Book Publisher of the Year for Scotland at the Business Excellence Awards 2025. Jenna Ortega isn't trying to be in a Marvel movie because she already was once: 'They took all my lines out'

Jenna Ortega isn't looking for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — because she already had one. The Wednesday actress reflected on her tiny part in 2013's Iron Man 3 in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight after the interviewer stated, "I'm hoping that we can create this world where we can get Jenna Ortega into the Marvel universe." Too late. Replied Ortega, "I did it once." She continued, "It was one of the first jobs I ever did." But she didn't get to speak in it. "They took all my lines out," Ortega said. "I'm in Iron Man 3 for a quick second. I take up the frame. I have one leg, and I'm the vice president's daughter." Related: Stranger Things star Sadie Sink joins Spider-Man 4 amid X-Men fan theories Ortega can be seen for a few seconds about an hour and a half into Iron Man 3. She doesn't have any lines in the final cut of the film, merely serving as a visual indicator of the allegiance of her vice president grandpa (Miguel Ferrer). The movie's villains are proponents of Extremis, a revolutionary regenerative treatment that could help patients regrow missing limbs (and also sometimes makes them explode). The presence of Ortega's character, who uses a wheelchair, shows that the vice president is in league with the antagonists — presumably so they can treat his granddaughter with Extremis — rather than an ally of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Related: Scarlett Johansson squashes MCU return rumors, says Black Widow should stay dead: 'Let her have her hero moment' In the ET interview, Ortega's Death of a Unicorn costar Paul Rudd lobbied on behalf of Marvel Studios, as he has played Ant-Man in five films for the studio. "Marvel is very good at kind of laying those breadcrumbs, so it might very well be that you come back," he said. "They're gonna create something for you! 'Cause they should be so lucky to have Jenna Ortega in their franchise." But Ortega suggested that her small moment in Iron Man 3 doesn't give her much hope for the future. "They even took my name away," she said, seemingly referring to the fact that she's simply credited as "Vice President's Granddaughter" in the movie. "I count that [as my MCU appearance], and then I move on." "I have been telling everyone I knew for weeks that she was going to win," Ortega said. "I knew it from the moment I met her that Mikey was just an absolutely beautiful, profound, and just an incredibly talented person. I was really excited that our characters were best friends in Scream." She continued, "More than anything, it's exciting to see good people win. And she's absolutely incredible. To see her getting her flowers is really a dream come true. I jumped! I screamed!" Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
