Mark English breaks Irish record with 800m win in Netherlands
MARK ENGLISH BROKE his own Irish 800m record tonight as he triumphed at the FBK Games in Hengelo in the Netherlands. The Donegal native set a new national record with his time of 1:43.92. Advertisement In the process English became the first Irishman to run under 1:44, as he ran clear of Yanis Meziane of France and Peyton Craig of Australia to win. The 32-year-old will race again on Thursday night in Oslo in the Diamond League. Tonight's result continues English's excellent form this year after claiming a bronze medal in March in the European Indoor Athletics Championships at 800m level. That achievement was also earned in the Netherlands in Apeldoorn and was the fifth European medal of his career.

The 32-year-old recorded a new national record time of 1:43.92 in a brilliant win in the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series on Monday. Advertisement That beat the record he had set just 10 days ago of 1:44.34 as he won in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The two performances were an improvement on the previous record he also set of 1:44.53 in June 2024 in Madrid. Monday's win is the Donegal athlete's third outdoor victory of the season after he also won at the Sound Running Track Fest meet in Los Angeles last month. In March, English also won a European 800m bronze to take his European medal tally to five. Also on Monday, Orla Comerford won the Para-athletics women's 100m in a season's best time of 11.96 seconds, 0.06 seconds off the Paralympic bronze medallist's personal best.

Donegal sensation Mark English smashes another Irish record on the track
Mark English claimed his third outdoor track triumph of the season and became the first Irishman to break 1:44 for 800m at the FBK Games in Hengelo. English, 32, produced another scintillating finish to cross the line in first place ahead of France's Yanis Meziane and Australia's Peyton Craig after sitting off the early pace at the event in the Netherlands, thus franking his recent strong form. The Donegal star clocked a new national record time of 1:43.92, bettering his previous best of 1:44.34 set 10 days ago in Bydgoszcz - both events were part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series. The Finn Valley athlete was also victorious in the Running Track Fest meet in LA last month. English trained at altitude after winning his fifth and latest European medal - in the indoors in Apeldoorn in March - and that work is paying off. 'It felt great,' said English of his latest success. 'I just wanted to run that race like a semi-final and I managed to do that. I stayed off the pace early and when I got to 600 I felt really good. 'I could see them fading and when I'm in good shape, I can always understand what the commentators are saying and I could hear him say there would be some tired legs in the home straight, it was nice to hear that. I thought I could catch them with about 80 metres left.' English is hoping this is only the start of a spectacular summer, with the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo to come in September. Earlier in the evening Orla Comerford (Raheny Shamrock AC) won the Para Athletics Women's 100m in a season's best time of 11.96 seconds (-1.2m/s), which is just 0.06 seconds off the Paralympic bronze medallist's personal best.

Mark English has become the first Irishman to break 1:44 in the 800m, lowering his own Irish record for the second time in 11 days with a brilliant run at the FBK Games in the Netherlands. English got home in 1:44.34 at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Bydgoszcz, Poland last Friday week. That performance was an improvement on his previous record (1:44.53) which he set in June 2024 at the Continental Tour meeting in Madrid. On Monday evening, he clocked 1:43.92 to take victory and make more Irish athletics history. It's been a fine year for the 32-year-old Donegal man. In March, he claimed European 800m bronze, a result which now sees him trail only Sonia O'Sullivan in Ireland's all-time medal tally at major championships. English has never failed to medal when making a European final, indoor or outdoor. He has four bronzes and a silver to his name, with his runner-up position achieved at the European Indoors in Prague a decade ago.

Mark English unleashed a spectacular performance to smash his own Irish 800m record and take victory at the FBK Games in Hengelo, the Netherlands on Monday evening, the 32-year-old becoming the first Irishman to run under 1:44 when clocking 1:43.92. 'It's a brilliant day,' he said. 'I always wanted to get the win and run 1:43 – I managed those two things today.' His time brought him home well clear of France's Yanis Meziane and Australia's Peyton Craig, who both clocked 1:44.32, with English making up huge ground over the final 200m, having sat off the pace over the first 400m, which was covered by the pacer in 49.20 seconds. His time smashed the Irish record of 1:44.34 which he set in Bydgoszcz, Poland last month, English scoring his second victory of the season at a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting. He will race next over 800m on Thursday night at the Oslo Diamond League, where Rhasidat Adeleke will also be in action over 400m. 'It felt great,' he said of the win in Hengelo. 'I just wanted to run that race like a semi-final and I managed to do that. I stayed off the pace early and when I got to 600 I felt really good. English won his fifth European medal back in March, a bronze at the European Indoors in the Dutch town of Apeldoorn, and he has improved his fitness since following a five-week block of training in Flagstaff, Arizona. 'I went away training at altitude with my coach Justin Rinaldi, that went really well,' he said. 'All these times and wins take a massive team so I do want to thank everyone who helped me get here today. So many people have helped me achieve that.'
