Qatar fall to Australia in FIBA Asia Cup

Tribune News Network Doha Qatar's senior national basketball team suffered a 110-83 defeat to Australia in their third and final round Group A match of 2025 FIBA Asia Cup at King Abdullah Sports City Arena in Jeddah on Sunday. The tournament, organized by FIBA Asia, runs from August 5 to 17 in Saudi Arabia and features 16 Asian teams. Australia dominated all four quarters, concluding the first at 22-20, the second at 24-23, widening the gap in the third to 31-20, and sealing the win in the fourth at 33-19. Qatar entered the game following consecutive losses to Lebanon (84-80) and South Korea (97-83), making the clash against Australia crucial for any remaining qualification hopes. Meanwhile, Australia began their title defense with victories over South Korea (97-61) and Lebanon (93-80). This result extended Australia's winning streak in the competition to 15 consecutive victories, dating back to their opening win on August 8, 2017, against Japan (84-68) at the Nouhad Nawfal Arena north of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. On the individual front, Brandon Goodwin led Qatar's scoring with 24 points over 40 minutes, shooting 46.15% from the field (5-of-7 two-pointers, 1-of-6 threes, and 11-of-13 free throws). He also contributed 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Tyler Harris added 15 points at a 70% clip inside the arc, while Zinedine Badri scored 13 points with 5 rebounds, and Alen Hadzibegovic tallied 13 points alongside 6 rebounds and notable defensive plays. Babacar Dieng chipped in 14 points, and Mustafa Ndao managed 3 points on 1-of-5 shooting. For Australia, Jalen Galloway shone with 24 points at an 80% shooting rate (6-of-7 twos, 2-of-3 threes, and 6-of-7 free throws), plus 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Rennie Smith scored 15 points (4-of-6 field goals, 4-of-6 free throws), and William Hickey added 15 points (6-of-10 shooting) with 8 assists. Harry Wessels contributed 8 points in 12 minutes, and Jack McVeigh added 10 points. Australia achieved a 56.52% field goal percentage (39-of-69) and outrebounded Qatar 45-32. With this loss, Qatar are on 3 points in fourth place in the group, while Australia top the standings with a perfect 6 points.

Boomers down Qatar, go unbeaten into Asia Cup quarters

Youngster Jaylin Galloway has led the way as the Boomers won an at times heated clash against Qatar by 110-82, advancing directly to the quarter-finals of men's basketball's Asia Cup in Jeddah. The 22-year-old Sydney Kings star scored an equal game-high 24 points, shooting at 80 per cent from the floor, as the Australians overcame a stern early test from winless Qatar at King Abdullah Sports City on Sunday. Coach Adam Caporn's youthful side went unbeaten in Group A - previously downing South Korea and Lebanon - as they chase a title three-peat. Australia will wait for the winner between hosts Saudi Arabia and the Philippines in the qualification to quarter-finals phase on Monday to determine their opponents in the final eight, which starts on Wednesday. The Boomers have won the Asia Cup every year since they were added to FIBA Asia in 2017. Player of the match Galloway had strong scoring support from bench player Reyne Smith (15 points), William Hickey (15 points, eight assists, five rebounds) and Will Magnay (11). After a sluggish start, the Boomers led by just 22-20 at quarter-time and 46-43 at halftime but broke away in a 31-point third quarter to grab a 77-63 lead and went on with it. Qatar were heavily reliant on star point guard Brandon Datrelle Goodwin, who matched Galloway's 24 points, but with inferior shooting efficiency. Goodwin was involved in the most heated moment early on when a seemingly incensed Hickey bumped into him, earning the Australian an unsportsmanlike foul. Boomers veteran Xavier Cooks fortunately restrained Goodwin, who appeared to take a swing toward Hickey. Goodwin incurred a technical foul. Caporn was pleased with the way his team turned things around after halftime. "I was really happy with the win. I didn't think we started very well defensively but we finished very well defensively," he said. "Tactically, we weren't doing a very good job of protecting the rim - I think they had 25 free throws by halftime, which is not a number that we can give up. "That was one of the main things that changed. Then as we got stops, we got a bit more of a rhythm offensively and our energy improved. "I was also impressed with out resilience. Qatar is a good team, good talent and a really good point guard who puts a lot of pressure on you." Qatar to meet South Korea in crucial Asia Cup clash today

Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national basketball team is gearing up for a critical showdown against South Korea on Friday in the second round of Group A action at the 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025. The tournament, featuring 16 top Asian teams and organized by FIBA Asia, is being held in Saudi Arabia from August 5 to 17. The highly-anticipated clash is scheduled at 11am local time at the King Abdullah Sports City arena in Jeddah. The game represents a turning point for both squads as they vie for advancement to the knockout stages. Qatar, which secured third-place finishes in the 2003 and 2005 tournaments, enters the contest following a narrow 80-84 defeat to Lebanon in their opener. Despite the loss, the team delivered a resilient and competitive performance, highlighted by American import Brandon Goodwin's standout effort of 33 points, five rebounds, and six assists, earning him recognition as the game's top performer. South Korea, meanwhile, are looking to overcome a challenging start having suffered a lopsided 97-61 loss to Australia. The Australians dominated from the outset, powered by Jack McVeigh's exceptional long-range shooting that sealed an emphatic victory. Nevertheless, South Korea boast a storied legacy in the competition, having claimed championships in 1969 (Thailand) and 1997 (Saudi Arabia). The team is determined to mount a strong comeback in this edition. With Australia and Lebanon leading Group A on two points each, and Qatar and South Korea tied at one point apiece, the stakes are high in the battle for the top three spots that secure qualification. Qatar will wrap up its group stage campaign against Australia on August 10. The Qatari delegation is led by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams, with support from Team Manager Jassim Ibrahim Ashkanani and Administrative Assistant Nabil Jumaa. Head Coach Hakan Demir of Turkey oversees the squad, assisted by Cengiz Karadag, Abdu So, Attila Yapciger, and Mohammed Fural. Administrative duties are managed by Jassim Ibrahim Ashkanani (Team Manager) and Nabil Jumaa (Administrative Assistant), while the medical team is headed by Dr. Adel Salem and Dr. Adel Hormia, alongside physiotherapist Nikasio Sagayno. Qatar's 12-player roster includes: Brandon Goodwin, Alen Hadzibegovic, Seydou Ndoye, Zinedine Badri, Tyler Harris, Aladji Magassa, Omar Saad, Mustafa Ndaw, Mohammed Bashir, Babacar Dieng, Abdulrahman Saad, and Mahmoud Darwish. A victory here would be a significant boost for Qatar's path to direct qualification or a spot in the crossover playoff games leading to the quarter-finals. Under the tournament format, group winners advance automatically, while second- and third-place teams compete in elimination crossovers.

Tim Cone says Gilas ‘outcoached' in loss to Chinese Taipei in FIBA Asia Cup

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone took full accountability for the team's 95-87 defeat to Chinese Taipei — a loss that dealt a huge early blow to their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup campaign. Cone, the most accomplished coach in PBA history, didn't mince words as he admitted to being 'outcoached' by Chinese Taipei tactician Gianluca Tucci, who once again got the better of Gilas following their 91-84 upset of the Philippines in the FIBA Asia qualifiers back in February. "Obviously we didn't play a very good one. [I'm] disappointed with the way we played, we got behind early in the game and just played on our heels the whole way. It's like we're in panic mode for 40 minutes," Cone said. "They're playing high-level basketball, extremely well-coached. Obviously, they outcoached us tonight. A disappointing performance on my part and really hurt by the loss." Chinese Taipei got off to a hot start in the game with sniper Ying-Chun Chen scoring 11 of his game-high 34 points in the first quarter alone, which helped them build a lead as big as 17 points, 27-10. But Gilas Pilipinas stood its ground with the likes of Dwight Ramos, Kevin Quiambao, and Justin Brownlee sparking a comeback. Quiambao, who made the most of his 16 minutes of playing time, opened the payoff period with a personal 5-0 run. He also knocked down a tough three-pointer to bring the Filipinos to within six, 80-74, with 4:43 left. Chen, however, dashed whatever hope Gilas had left, drilling another triple and sinking two free throws to push Chinese Taipei ahead, 85-74. Quiambao would still show some fight in him by firing a triple, but Chinese Taipei big man Brandon Gilbeck converted back-to-back baskets including a game-sealing dunk to close it out for the world no. 73 Chinese Taipei. Cone admitted that the win proved Chinese Taipei has the tools to contend for a podium finish in the tournament. "If Chinese Taipei continues to play like they did, making shots the way that they were making, [then] they could be one of the guys that gets a medal, without a doubt," he said. But his focus isn't on the other team right now, stressing they have to regroup as one unit, especially as they will have to go up against a powerhouse New Zealand next. "But we'll see what we can do, we have to see if we can bounce back from this and move forward. That's the only thing that we can do at this point." —JMB, GMA Integrated News
