Tim Cone says Gilas ‘outcoached' in loss to Chinese Taipei in FIBA Asia Cup

GMA Network5 days ago
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone took full accountability for the team's 95-87 defeat to Chinese Taipei — a loss that dealt a huge early blow to their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup campaign.
Cone, the most accomplished coach in PBA history, didn't mince words as he admitted to being 'outcoached' by Chinese Taipei tactician Gianluca Tucci, who once again got the better of Gilas following their 91-84 upset of the Philippines in the FIBA Asia qualifiers back in February.
"Obviously we didn't play a very good one. [I'm] disappointed with the way we played, we got behind early in the game and just played on our heels the whole way. It's like we're in panic mode for 40 minutes," Cone said.
"They're playing high-level basketball, extremely well-coached. Obviously, they outcoached us tonight. A disappointing performance on my part and really hurt by the loss."
Chinese Taipei got off to a hot start in the game with sniper Ying-Chun Chen scoring 11 of his game-high 34 points in the first quarter alone, which helped them build a lead as big as 17 points, 27-10.
But Gilas Pilipinas stood its ground with the likes of Dwight Ramos, Kevin Quiambao, and Justin Brownlee sparking a comeback.
Quiambao, who made the most of his 16 minutes of playing time, opened the payoff period with a personal 5-0 run. He also knocked down a tough three-pointer to bring the Filipinos to within six, 80-74, with 4:43 left.
Chen, however, dashed whatever hope Gilas had left, drilling another triple and sinking two free throws to push Chinese Taipei ahead, 85-74.
Quiambao would still show some fight in him by firing a triple, but Chinese Taipei big man Brandon Gilbeck converted back-to-back baskets including a game-sealing dunk to close it out for the world no. 73 Chinese Taipei.
Cone admitted that the win proved Chinese Taipei has the tools to contend for a podium finish in the tournament.
"If Chinese Taipei continues to play like they did, making shots the way that they were making, [then] they could be one of the guys that gets a medal, without a doubt," he said.
But his focus isn't on the other team right now, stressing they have to regroup as one unit, especially as they will have to go up against a powerhouse New Zealand next.

Gilas will look to atone for the opening day loss on Thursday night against the Tall Blacks, who cruised to an early 1-0 card in Group D following a 100-78 win over Iraq.
"But we'll see what we can do, we have to see if we can bounce back from this and move forward. That's the only thing that we can do at this point."

Gilas Pilipinas shoots for FIBA Asia QF spot in do-or-die match vs Saudi Arabia

The stakes couldn't be higher as Gilas Pilipinas tangles with host Saudi Arabia in a midnight Tuesday showdown that will decide who advances to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals in Jeddah. The Filipinos and the Saudis will meet again after three years at the King Abdullah Sports City at 12 a.m., with the winner setting a QF date with no less than two-time defending champion Australia. With a lot on the line, both teams expect a dogfight. Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone said he understands it's going to be a tough road ahead for his crew, especially with how they fared in their last three games against Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and Iraq. The Filipinos struggled early on after dropping their matches to Chinese Taipei and the Tall Blacks, but found their breakthrough win against the Iraqis as they punched their ticket to the qualification to quarterfinals. Still, there's no letup for Gilas. "We know the road is going to be tough, we know we picked a tougher road to go but we're ready to accept that challenge," Cone stressed following their 66-57 win over Iraq last Saturday. "It's tough when you're playing on your heels and playing behind all the time, which we did against Chinese Taipei and we did it again against New Zealand but what I like about our team is we just don't quit." Same goes for Saudi Arabia, which sees the Philippines as among the top contenders in the tournament despite a 1-2 win-loss card in Group D. "We have our next match, it's not [gonna be] easy, it's very difficult. But everyday is difficult so we'll give our best," Saudi Arabia head coach Ricard Casas said. "Of course it's very important in these next hours to prepare for the game because we'll play against a good team, the Philippines. It's top-level in the FIBA rankings, they have excellent players." The Philippines and Saudi Arabia have met only three times in FIBA tournaments, with the Filipinos winning on all occasions, the last of which was a 76-63 win during the fifth window of 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Jeddah as well. Kai Sotto led the way along with RR Pogoy and CJ Perez in that 13-point victory. But Gilas isn't putting much weight on the past, choosing instead to embrace the challenges at hand. Justin Brownlee is once again expected to spearhead Gilas' offense, but Cone urged the rest of the squad to step up amid the defensive focus on the naturalized forward. Dwight Ramos, who scored a team-high 21 points in their last game, is tipped to provide the huge lift alongside the front court tandem of June Mar Fajrdo and AJ Edu and the veteran presence of Scottie Thompson. Gilas, though, might be one man down with Calvin Oftana hurting his ankle in their last outing. "We have to use Justin not just to be as a scorer for us, but we can play off of him because he does draw so much attention," Cone added. "And we actually made our run in that second quarter with Justin out of the game so everybody was like more involved." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Saudi Arabia coach braces for 'very difficult' playoff game vs. Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup

Saudi Arabia coach Ricard Casas is preparing for what he describes as a difficult game against the Philippines as both nations shoot for a quarterfinals spot at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The hosts and the Filipinos will clash on Tuesday midnight in the qualification to the quarterfinals and Casas acknowledges it won't be an easy contest. "Thank you very much [to the fans] because they supported us. We feel their support and we need more," Casas said following their 84-59 win over India on Saturday. "We need more. We have our next match, it's not [gonna be] easy, it's very difficult. But everyday is difficult so we'll give our best." READ MORE | What's next for Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup? The world no. 65 Saudi Arabia opened its campaign against higher-ranked China and absorbed a narrow 93-88 loss. But they bounced back right away the next game, pulling off a 77-73 escape against Jordan behind Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, who posted an all-around outing of 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to lead their first Asia Cup win in 12 years. Abdur-Rahkman picked up where he left off and logged 14 markers, six boards, and five dimes top star in their crucial 84-59 win against Jordan to close out Group C at second spot and set up a playoff duel against the Philippines. Casas, a Spanish tactician, said all they can do now is make the most of the limited hours left before facing a Philippine team that Saudi Arabia has yet to beat at the FIBA level. "Of course it's very important in these next hours to prepare for the game because we'll play against a good team, the Philippines," Casas added. "It's top-level in the FIBA rankings, they have excellent players." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
