Duluth police officer commended for rescuing 4-year-old girl from pool while off duty

A Duluth police officer who was relaxing at a pool while he was off duty sprang into action to rescue a 4-year-old girl. The girl's mother told police that her daughter, who typically wears 'floaties' while swimming, jumped into the pool without them on Sunday. Officer Preston Marsh noticed the girl struggling and ran about 25 yards across the pool deck and jumped into the water to save her. I truly don't know what would have occurred had he not been on high alert and jumped in to save my sweet four-year-old.' Police said Marsh downplayed the act as something any parent would do, but Chief Jacquelyn Carruth said in a statement: 'When you truly have a heart to serve others, as police officers do - it doesn't 'turn off' when you clock out for the day. This incident is a shining example of Officer Marsh's dedication to public safety and yet another example of the outstanding work being done by our officers both on and off duty. I am very proud of the actions Officer Marsh took in order to save the little girl's life.' Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services honored five firefighters for saving the life of a house fire victim. On Feb. 14, 2025, firefighters responded to a working fire of what appeared to be a vacant home. There was heavy fire, smoke, and low visibility. One firefighter entered a back door, then realized the accessible area was a searchable area where any potential victims had a good chance of survival. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] He relayed that information to his captain, and the decision was made to search the home. During the search, a firefighter found a victim lying on the floor. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation. The department honored five firefighters with the Distinguished Service Award and Unit Citation. Heroes honored for assisting shooting victim at Snellville park

Snellville police say they are getting closer to finding the shooters from a violent weekend that led to six people being shot at Briscoe Park. While police look for who's responsible for the shootings, they're also increasing patrols at the park. Two witnesses who ran toward the danger are being hailed as heroes. Nine days after the shooting, Snellville residents were still processing what happened at Briscoe Park. 'These acts of violence have no place in our city,' Mayor Barbara Bender said at Monday night's City Council meeting. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The meeting turned into an unexpected moment of recognition for two men who ran toward the gunfire to help a shooting victim until first responders arrived. 'We are blessed to have heroes among us, and I just want to say thank you to the two gentlemen who showed their true colors,' Mayor Pro Tem Todd Warner said at the meeting. CJ Pitt and his father-in-law, Antonio Brito, had no idea they'd be getting a proclamation that night. They said they just did what felt right when bullets started flying at the park. The shooting investigation is progressing. 'Detectives are working around the clock, following up on tips and reviewing evidence while progress is being made,' Bender said.
