Katie McCabe given hero's welcome by Ireland teammates as she arrives in Turkey
Katie McCabe was given a guard of honour by her Irish teammates as she arrived for International duty on Tuesday. The captain has been enjoying Arsenal's celebrations following the Gunners' famous Champions League final win over Barcelona last weekend. McCabe was the life and soul of the party, singing and acting as the DJ for the open top bus parade as thousands packed the streets of North London. It was expected that McCabe would make her way to the Ireland base on Tuesday, with the squad set to take on Turkey in a Nations League clash this Friday. And the skipper arrived as expected, and when she made her way into the team hotel, she was given a heroes welcome as her teammates and members of staff gave her a guard of honour and chanted her name. After a couple of moments, McCabe jokingly called on the festivities to be cancelled and for everyone to get back to preparing for the game. It's been a whirlwind few days for McCabe, who made history on Saturday in the final. That was her 15th Champions League appearance for the season, and with 1,296 minutes under her belt, she now holds the record for most minutes played in a single Women's Champions League campaign. After the game, McCabe spoke about the enormity of the achievement: 'I'm just in disbelief, to be honest. Well, no actually, I believe it, because we suffered together today. "Barcelona threw absolutely everything at us and we f**king… sorry… we kept together, we rode it out, we rode the storm, and our game-changers came on, made sure we got runs in behind, and then Stina (Blackstenius) got the goal in the end, which was unbelievable. "It's unbelievable to give this to our fans, our family, the players that have been here for so long, the players that have come and gone, you used to be an Arsenal player as well, it's been unbelievable, an unbelievable day for the club.' She added: 'Can I just say, when I first came to the club I was a young, naïve kid that came over from Dublin, and Fara (Williams), Emma Byrne took me under their wing right from the very start, taught me what it meant to be a professional footballer, and to play for Arsenal and wear the badge, and here I am, being able to connect with Fara and for her to see me and the girls to see us, it's just an unbelievable feeling.' Katie McCabe makes unique piece of history with Arsenal's Champions League win
Katie McCabe and her Arsenal teammates defied the odds to beat the mighty Barcelona and win the Women's Champions League on Saturday evening. Substitute Stina Blackstenius was the hero, entering the fray in the second-half and scoring the winning goal to hand Arsenal the Champions League for the first time in 18 years. It was a brilliant evening for Ireland skipper McCabe and she more than played her part in the win, helping Arsenal keep the likes of Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati at bay. Even without the win, it was a history making evening for McCabe. Including qualifying rounds, the Dubliner - who started all 15 European games for Arsenal this season - played the most minutes in a season in the history of the Women's Champions League, playing 1,296 minutes in total across the competition. McCabe has been the star of the celebrations since the win and even re-created her infamous bust-up with Chloe Kelly. Speaking after the match, McCabe said: 'I'm just in disbelief, to be honest. Katie McCabe's Champions League winning interview in full, including f-bomb
Katie McCabe gave a compelling interview immediately after the final whistle in Saturday's Women's Champions League final win against Barcelona - in which she described her journey from Dublin to the biggest stage in European football, and name-checked some old teammates. There was also an f-bomb and an impromptu holiday plan that might have alarmed Ireland boss Carla Ward ahead of next week's return to Nations League action. An emotional McCabe joked that she might hop on a flight to Spanish party island Ibiza. Instead, however, she is scheduled to meet up with her international teammates for next Friday's game away to Turkey, and the visit of Slovenia to Cork on June 3. She will head into her latest international camp with a brand new gold medal to show off to her Girls in Green pals - thanks to Stina Blackstenius's late winner against Barcelona. Here is every word of post-match interview: 'I'm just in disbelief, to be honest. Well, no actually, I believe it, because we suffered together today. Barcelona threw absolutely everything at us and we f**king… sorry… we kept together, we rode it out, we rode the storm, and our game-changers came on, made sure we got runs in behind, and then Stina (Blackstenius) got the goal in the end, which was unbelievable. It's unbelievable to give this to our fans, our family, the players that have been here for so long, the players that have come and gone, you used to be an Arsenal player as well, it's been unbelievable, an unbelievable day for the club.' 'Yeah, look, that word got thrown around during the week, underdogs, but we deserved to be in this final. Right from the start, we've been in it since the very start, having to qualify for the tournament and the campaign, we had some difficult results in the group stage but we bounced back in the knockout rounds, we bounced back, we kept going, we kept being resilient, persistent and we were ruthless in front of goal. It just needed one chance and Stina took it.' 'Can I just say, when I first came to the club I was a young, naïve kid that came over from Dublin, and Fara (Williams), Emma Byrne took me under their wing right from the very start, taught me what it meant to be a professional footballer, and to play for Arsenal and wear the badge, and here I am, being able to connect with Fara and for her to see me and the girls to see us, it's just an unbelievable feeling.' 'Champions League winner, we all are. To give that to our fans today, they've been unbelievable, they were with us for every kick of the game.' 'Undisclosed location. I'll probably fly out to Ibiza in the morning!'
