Drought-like situation in 5 dists: Sarma

1 2 Guwahati: Assam cabinet on Friday approved notifying drought-like situation in five districts in western Assam due to significantly deficient rainfall — around 40% below normal — based on data from the meteorological department and groundwater commission. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post-cabinet briefing said a formal declaration of drought-like situation in Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Barpeta, Bongaigaon and Baksa districts will be issued by the revenue department following the cabinet's approval. In view of the prevailing severe drought-like situation, the cabinet has considered it to be a state specific disaster and accorded in principle approval for extending compensation benefits to the affected beneficiaries in selected districts as per the SDRF norms. Sarma said farmers who had insured their crops under the Fasal Bima Yojana will be eligible for compensation as per the guidelines. A few other districts of upper Assam have also received less rainfall so far this year, and paddy output could be hit if it continues in July-Aug, he added. According to a report by the Assam State Disaster management Authority, the state, due to its unique physiographic and climatic conditions, is one of the most disaster-prone areas in the country and is prone to multiple natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, cyclones and occasional droughts. The report says Assam suffers periodic droughts due to variability in rainfall pattern over the years. "Warming of the temperature is expected to reduce production of staple crops such as rice, horticulture produce, economically important tea produce, milk yields and fish catch, affecting the agriculture productivity and livelihood of people of Assam," the report says. "All across the State, except in the southern districts, drought weeks are going to rise as well by more than 75% with respect to the base line (1971- 2000). This means reduced productivity in the primary sector i.e., agriculture and allied activity, thereby impacting life and livelihood of people in Assam," it adds.

GUWAHATI: Five Assam districts have been hit by a drought-like situation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting, he said five western Assam districts, such as Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri, Baksa and Bongaigaon, received less-than-normal rainfall. 'According to IMD and groundwater commission data, these districts received 40% deficient rainfall,' Sarma said. He also said that the Revenue Department would declare them as hit by a drought-like situation. Stating that farmers, who had insured their crops under the Fasal Bima Yojana, would be eligible for compensation, he said some other districts of eastern Assam received either excess or deficient rainfall. Meanwhile, the cabinet approved the issuance of concurrence for financial sanction of Rs 342 crore for the implementation of 'Mukhya Mantri Eti Koli Duti Paat' (Assam Tea Garden Workers' Financial Assistance Scheme-2025) flagship scheme. This initiative marks the 200th year celebration of Assam Tea and aims to provide one-time financial assistance to tea garden workers in recognition of their invaluable contribution. The main objective of the scheme is to promote financial inclusion by ensuring all beneficiaries have active, Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. The amount of Rs 342 crore will be disbursed in a single instalment of Rs 5,000 per eligible beneficiary to around 7 lakh workers, both temporary and permanent.

Congress government failed to address farmer issues: Telangana BJP president Ramchander

HYDERABAD: State BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Thursday slammed the Congress government and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for failing to address farmers' issues despite completing 19 months in office. Speaking at the Kisan Morcha state office-bearers' meeting at the BJP headquarters in Hyderabad, he accused the state government of neglecting farmers due to its skewed policies. He urged party workers to collaborate with the Kisan Morcha to highlight farmers' grievances and counter the Congress' 'anti-farmer' stance. He directed the Morcha members to launch agitations, gather grassroots-level feedback and promote central welfare schemes like PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, Soil Health Cards and Fasal Bima Yojana. He alleged that while the Modi government supports farmers, the previous BRS regime and the current Congress administration failed to implement these initiatives effectively. Ramchander Rao accused the Congress of creating an artificial urea shortage to gain political mileage ahead of upcoming local body elections. The BJP leader refuted the state's claims of central negligence, revealing that Telangana received 12.02 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of urea against the required 9.5 LMT for the 2024-25 Rabi season. 'Where are the remaining three LMT?' he questioned, alleging 'false propaganda' by the state government.

Rajasthan energy minister Heeralal Nagar's Rs 2 lakh electricity bill unpaid: Hanuman Beniwal alleges VIP bias; flags fund misuse

Hanuman Beniwal, Heeralal Nagar NEW DELHI: Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal has alleged that Rajasthan energy minister Heeralal Nagar has unpaid electricity bills worth over Rs 2 lakh, even as the power supply to Beniwal's official residence and MP office in Nagaur was recently cut over non-payment of dues. Beniwal claimed to have shared documents showing pending dues of Rs 2.17 lakh for Nagar's government bungalow on Hospital Road. He questioned whether the minister's connection would also be disconnected, as his had been. According to Beniwal, bills for Nagar's Jyoti Nagar flats were cleared from government funds. However, when officials tried to settle the Hospital Road bill the same way, the treasury reportedly refused, stating that only one bill per minister can be paid from public money. The minister denied having any pending dues and clarified that the bill in question is still within its due date. Beniwal further alleged corruption in the installation of smart meters, claiming that the process involved kickbacks reaching up to senior officials, including the minister. He said the tendering process began under the Congress government, but was finalised and implemented under the BJP, without any changes to conditions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 息を呑むようなファンタジーの世界に足を踏み入れ、かつてないほどゲームを制覇しましょう レイドシャドウレジェンド 今すぐインストール Undo Beniwal also raised allegations against Khivsar MLA Rewant Ram Danga, pointing to overdue bills and alleged rule violations in granting electricity connections. He accused Danga of involvement in irregularities under the Prime Minister's Fasal Bima Yojana and illegal mining activities. He criticised the state government over the sub-inspector recruitment controversy, alleging inconsistent positions in court and calling it an example of administrative failure. He also named the Nagaur SP and former MP Jyoti Mirdha in alleged illegal sand mining operations.
