Khartoum cholera outbreak due to environmental degradation, minister
There are over 600 confirmed cases of cholera per week during the past four weeks, the health minister said, adding that this increase was expected because of prevailing poor environmental conditions. Khartoum: Altaghyeer Sudanese Minister for Health, Haytham Mohamed Ibrahim, has attributed the cholera outbreak in Khartoum state to environmental degradation following the army recapture of areas and the return of residents, particularly in Jebel Awlia and Salha quarters south and west of Khartoum respectively, with acute lack of clean drinking water and poor environmental conditions. The minister said in press statements on Saturday between 600 to 700 cholera cases were being confirmed weekly over the past couple of weeks, adding that this increase was expected given the spreading of poor environmental conditions. The minister praised the efforts exerted by Khartoum State government in collaboration with UN agencies and international organizations, resulting in the establishment of at least 8 cholera treatment centres and boosted disease control efforts. Cholera resurgence has also been reported in six other states including al-Gezira, central Sudan, where localities like al-Haj Abdullah took the drastic precautionary measure of closing down schools and markets places, according to news reports. Al-Taj Abdel Rahman, working at the city's main hospital, revealed that 46 cases and 6 deaths were reported over the past six days. The Health Minister has, however, stressed that the health situation was fully under continuous monitoring by the Federal Ministry of Health's Emergency Room, which works around the clock to implement the required measures. He confirmed that the upcoming cholera vaccination campaign will contribute to reducing the number of cases. The two year old war, between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has led to a catastrophic collapse of medical services coupled with the spread of diseases and threat of famine.

Emergency enforced in all public-sector hospitals in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has enforced health emergency in all the public sector hospitals following Indian attack on multiple location in the country. Federal Minister for National Health Services and Coordination Mustafa Kamal made this announcement here on Wednesday as a part of urgent measures in response to the crisis. Emergency has been enforced in all public hospitals in Islamabad, and all medical staff have been instructed to remain fully alert and prepared to respond at any moment. All scheduled leaves of doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and administrative personnel under the Federal Ministry of Health and its subordinate institutions have been cancelled with immediate effect. All employees are required to report to duty without delay. The ministry has directed all the provincial health secretaries to maintain constant coordination with the federal health authorities. They have also been directed to regularly update their emergency response plans in accordance with evolving federal guidelines. In view of the national emergency, Minister Kamal has cancelled his official visits to Geneva and Qatar. 'At this moment, my top priority is to focus on the domestic situation and ensure the protection of public health,' he stated. A 24/7 Emergency Quick Response Centre has been established at the Federal Health Institution. This centre will assess health-related emergencies stemming from the ongoing conflict and coordinate immediate response efforts. It will maintain direct communication with all provincial and district health authorities to ensure a synchronised and efficient approach. Kamal, has strongly denounced the Indian missile attack that struck civilian areas and targeted a mosque, calling it a blatant violation of international norms and an attack on humanity. The minister said, 'By targeting innocent civilians and a place of worship, India has crossed all limits of decency and exposed its extremist mindset. This is not merely an assault on Pakistan—it is an attack on the entire Muslim Ummah.' Calling the act a 'cowardly and unforgivable crime,' Kamal criticised the Modi administration for what he described as an act of provocation. 'India's actions reflect the true face of its leadership. The targeting of a mosque lays bare the deep-rooted extremism driving Indian policy,' he stated. Kamal emphasised that Pakistan's commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness. 'The era of silence is over. The time has come to respond to the enemy in a language it understands,' he said, underscoring the nation's readiness to defend its sovereignty. He said, 'Every citizen of Pakistan today stands firmly with our military. We are united, resolute, and prepared to confront any challenge to our dignity and security,' he said. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with health officials as emergency services are mobilised to meet the growing demands on the healthcare system. On the other hand, in the wake of the recent Indian aggression against Pakistan, authorities in Rawalpindi issued an emergency alert for three allied hospitals in Rawalpindi to deal with any potential emergency situations. A 14-point emergency schedule was activated in this regard. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University, Professor Dr Muhammad Umar. The meeting, attended by the Medical Superintendents (MS) and Heads of Departments of the three hospitals - Benazir Bhutto General Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, and Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital - was conducted at the New Teaching Block of Rawalpindi Medical University. During the meeting, the 14-point emergency schedule was discussed, and immediate implementation of the following directives was ordered by the VC. Officials have been tasked to ensure disaster cupboards are stocked and up to standard, ensure availability of all blood groups in the blood bank, finalise emergency bed allocations, maintain six burn beds in each hospital, ensure orthopedic availability of beds and uninterrupted gas supply, prepare anesthesia emergency rosters for senior staff, allocate 48-hour shifts for senior staff and ensure operation theaters are ready with required HR and linen. It is further asked that ICU will be equipped with a capacity of 10 beds, with a 10.10 core ready for emergency services, and hospitals will be prepared for emergency wartime services within the next 12 hours. In case of deep injuries, burns, bullet wounds, explosions, or missile injuries, doctors will be ready to respond quickly. All emergency staff and Heads of Departments (HODs) must keep their mobile phones on at all times and remain available for duty, including on-call services. Continuous communication should be maintained with the Deputy Commissioner (DC)'s office, Rescue 1122, Edhi Ambulance Service, and Civil Defence. With additional input from APP box Women lawyers condemn Indian aggression our correspondent RAWALPINDI. Senior female lawyers from the High Court and District Bar Associations in Rawalpindi have strongly condemned India's recent missile attacks, calling them cowardly acts that resulted in the deaths of innocent women and children. They praised Pakistan's armed forces for their robust defensive response and vowed continued support in the face of aggression. Speaking to The Express Tribune, senior lawyers, including Sarkar Abbas, Tasleem Abbasi, Ansa Mehnaz Satti, Nusrat Noreen Satti, Kaneez Fatima, Zaib Fayyaz, Masooma Asif, Sabahat Tariq, Shazia Yasin Hashmi, Naheed Ayub Raja, Iqra Asif, Zohra Fazal Khokhar, and Zubaida Khanum, stated that Indian hostility will always be met with equivalent strength. They asserted that India cannot unilaterally violate international agreements like the Indus Waters Treaty, which has the World Bank as guarantor. The lawyers commended Pakistan's air force for downing five Rafale fighter jets and described the act as a significant achievement. They emphasised that the nation stands united with its military and, if necessary, both male and female lawyers, along with court clerks, are ready to donate blood for the armed forces. "We may have a thousand internal disagreements," said one lawyer, "but when it comes to Pakistan, we are one." They concluded by stating that India would remember the consequences of its actions for years to come, vowing to settle all past and present scores accumulated over the past 77 years.

Germany secure Nations League final four after wild draw
Maybe it was the 30-minute happy hour on all food and drink for the fans in Dortmund that did it. Maybe it was Joshua Kimmich's quick thinking from the corner flag. Or maybe it was just that Julian Nagelsmann's Germany did just enough when it mattered to advance. Whatever it was, the momentum behind this team continues to build. Three days after the impressive performance in Milan, Germany drew 3-3 with Italy (5-4 on aggregate) to secure the final four of the Nations League, a tournament which they will also host. Nagelsmann's vision of following in the footsteps of Spain — who won the Nations League in 2023 to set up their Euro win last summer — is well and truly alive, even if it wobbled in a game the hosts unnecessarily turned wild. Germany looked to have decided the tie early, as Joshua Kimmich scored one and set up another two by the break. But a slip in the second half by the Bayern man opened the door for Italy, who gleefully took advantage to make for a nervy finale. Italy coach Luciano Spalletti said his team would have to do the impossible to progress, and, despite a rousing second half, so it proved. Nagelsmann will feel aggrieved that the second half followed the first, but he will also know that an unusual slip and unlucky handball played a key role in helping Italy. His Germany team remains strong, and they will have another chance to prove it this summer. It would be easy to dismiss the increasing success of this team as just another football team doing well, but Julian Nagelsmann's team returning to form plays a relevant part in a country entering a new era under new leadership and at a time of global tension. The success of and excitement around the team lifts the mood, perhaps only briefly on a Sunday evening, but it also acts a reminder of the value of sport in wider society. This week, Julian Nagelsmann lamented sports' current standing in schools, kindergartens and wider society, saying it was currently too low. There are nearly 90,000 sports clubs in the country, but a recent survey on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health found that only 22% of boys and 21% of girls get the 60 minutes of exercise per day recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Almost 80 percent do not reach this mark. Everyone is "a little more busy with themselves," Nagelsmann said. "That's why I would like the importance of exercise and sport to be greater than it currently is. Because I believe that it is good for people and children and also brings them together." This isn't about everyone becoming a Germany international, but rather about the idea of joy and movement being forgotten. Nagelsmann's Germany is reminding everyone of that, game by game. And, perhaps in the process, this Germany team is aiding sport's standing in wider society. Having won the tie, Germany have also avoided a bigger World Cup qualifying group. The road to the USA; Canada and Mexico now starts in September with trips to Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg. Before all of that though, is a second straight summer fairytale. The Champions League final and the Nations League final four in Munich all in the space of eight days in June — what a summer lies in store for football in Germany and Nagelsmann's national side are at the forefront of it. Nigeria: Tinubu approves employment of 774 health fellows
President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a key initiative by the Federal Ministry of Health aimed at driving sustainable improvements in Nigeria's healthcare sector. Announcing the initiative on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized his administration's commitment to youth empowerment and national development. The launch event was attended by Nigeria's development partners, senior government officials, and traditional leaders, including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III. The selection of the fellows—one from each of Nigeria's 774 local government areas – was based on merit, following a rigorous process that saw over 360,000 applicants compete for the positions. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, highlighted this as a testament to the administration's dedication to fairness and excellence. The President's unexpected approval of the fellows' employment drew enthusiastic applause from attendees. Describing the programme as a 'transformative initiative,' Tinubu underscored the vital role of young Nigerians in shaping the country's future. 'This programme reflects my administration's commitment to harnessing the immense potential of our greatest asset – our young people. With over 60% of Nigerians under 30, we have one of the most energetic and resourceful youth populations in the world. This is an opportunity to drive innovation, economic growth, and social transformation,' he stated. Tinubu urged the fellows to fully embrace their roles, seeing themselves as the future leaders of Nigeria's healthcare system. 'Your selection is more than just recruitment – it is a commitment to creating a nation where every Nigerian, regardless of social status, gender, or background, has access to equal opportunities. You are this country's greatest asset, and we are dedicated to building a future where Nigeria stands tall with pride,' he affirmed. Emphasizing the long-term vision of the programme, Tinubu highlighted its role in cultivating a new generation of health leaders who will drive sustained change and innovation in the sector. 'A strong healthcare system is essential for national development. No country can thrive if its people are unhealthy. You are the foundation of this vision, and I am proud to be here with you today,' he declared. Professor Pate expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, describing it as a crucial step in revolutionizing Nigeria's healthcare system. 'The movement to improve the health of Nigerians has begun, and we are already witnessing positive results,' he said. Also present at the event were Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Youth Minister, Ayodele Olawande; and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, who all delivered inspiring messages to encourage the fellows in their new roles.
