Ben Sulayem pledges to transform FIA
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, is set for a busy agenda of high-level discussions at its annual FIA Region I Spring Meeting starting in Marrakech on Tuesday. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem will be in attendance at the three-day assembly of mobility and motorsport leaders from across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to discuss key initiatives in road safety, sustainable mobility, regional sporting growth, and innovation in transport. Speaking ahead of the conference, which is hosted by Mobilite Club Maroc, Ben Sulayem said: 'As a global federation it is not often that we are able to unite our community in one place, so moments like this are particularly special. 'The next few days will provide an invaluable opportunity for engagement and participation, along with key votes to decide on the leadership of our community.' The Region I Spring Meeting will coincide with a series of sessions designed to equip Member Clubs with new strategies and insights into evolving mobility and sporting trends. The event will be an opportunity to share knowledge and best practice across topics such as service delivery, sustainable responsibility, and consumer-focused innovation. Ben Sulayem said: 'Our Members are fundamental to the success of the FIA, and I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made together during my first term in office and the successes we have achieved. 'We continue to strengthen the link between sport and mobility, expanding our reach and impact on the global stage. 'I am committed to the transformation of the FIA into a modern, accessible, and connected organisation. Globally we are continuing our mission to double motorsport participation through grassroot initiatives and accessibility programmes such as Affordable Cross Car and the Global Karting Plan, while ensuring ongoing empowerment of all regions across our mobility capabilities.' The FIA Member Club structure forms the backbone of the federation's governance and operations, with each full Member Club holding voting rights across the FIA's elections and regulatory decisions. Clubs are grouped into two primary categories, with some serving in both roles. Mobility Clubs provide mobility services and represent the interest of road users, with a focus on road safety, travel and tourism, consumer rights, and sustainable mobility. National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) govern and develop motorsport at a national level, are responsible for sporting events, issuing licenses.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem nominates Malcolm Wilson for deputy role
DUBAI: Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, has nominated Malcolm Wilson, a leading figure in British motor sport, for the position of deputy president for sport. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The FIA, the global governing body for motor sport and advocacy group for motoring organizations, said on Wednesday that members will vote on the nomination during the federation's Extraordinary General Assemblies and Conference in Macau in June. Wilson is the managing director of M-Sport, which has operated Ford's World Rally program since 1997. Previously he was a highly successful rally driver, who won the British Rally in 1994. He is an honorary member of the British Racing Drivers Club, and in 2009 he was awarded an OBE for services to motor sport in the Queen's Birthday Honors list. Under his leadership, M-Sport won the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers in 2006 and 2007 and 2017, and back-to-back driver and co-driver championships in 2017 and 2018. It also served as a technical partner with Bentley Motors, leading the design and development of the Continental GT3 race car, and in electric motor sport with Jaguar in the Ipace eTrophy event. The deputy president for sport, one of the most senior elected roles within the FIA, serves on the World Motor Sport Council and has a wide range of responsibilities, including development of global motor sport policies in collaboration with FIA commissions and national sporting authorities, and the promotion of safety, sustainability and innovation in the sport. Ben Sulayem said: 'I am delighted to nominate Malcolm Wilson OBE for the role of FIA deputy president for sport. Malcolm has had a distinguished career in global motor sport. 'For over 40 years he has competed at the highest level, both as a driver and technical partner to teams. This experience will be invaluable to the FIA and our member clubs as we continue to grow grassroots and professional motor sport, driving innovation in the sport to benefit fans, drivers and teams.' Wilson said: 'Having started my career in motor sport in the 1970s as a driver and then technical partner to teams, it is a great honor to be nominated for the role of FIA deputy president for sport. 'The FIA has played a central role in my career and I very much look forward to supporting the president and all the FIA family in its important mission. There has never been a more exciting time to be in motor sport, and I know first-hand the benefits the sport brings to families and communities across the world. 'I look forward to working with the president for the duration of his current term of office, bringing our sport to new audiences and ensuring we deliver the very best championships for all our competitors.'

FIA president welcomes Georgia to sport's global fight against online abuse
DUBAI: Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, has welcomed the government of Georgia to the organization's growing United Against Online Abuse coalition. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Georgian Minister of Sport Shalva Gogoladze formally signed the charter during a meeting with the FIA chief over the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. It becomes the 10th country to join the united and influential coalition of governments, sporting bodies and technology platforms committed to combating online harassment and hate speech across the sporting world. Members of the group work in close partnership to confront the rise of online hate and its damaging impact on mental health, participation in and integrity of sport. During their meeting, Ben Sulayem and Gogoladze discussed the minister's commitment to protecting athletes and safe sports, as well as his 'Start to Talk' campaign on the reporting of harassment and abuse. As part of UAOA's work to shape effective policies and strategies to address online abuse, the campaign is looking forward to collaborating with Georgia, exchanging best practices and strengthening cooperation through evidence-sharing. UAOA was founded by Ben Sulayem in 2022 as a new initiative by the FIA, which is the governing body for world motorsport and the federation for mobility organizations. He said: 'I am delighted to welcome the government of Georgia to the United Against Online Abuse coalition. This endorsement underscores Georgia's leadership in recognizing online abuse as a serious threat to the future of sport. Together we are building a strong, global alliance that will deliver meaningful change and make sport a safer space for everyone.' Gogoladze added: 'Georgia is honored to stand with our international partners in the fight against online abuse in sport. Signing the United Against Online Abuse Charter reflects our unwavering commitment to promoting safety, respect, and mental wellbeing for all athletes, coaches, officials and fans. We are proud to support this global movement established by the FIA and to play our part in creating a sporting culture that thrives on safety and inclusivity, both on and off the field.' The campaign has witnessed rapid growth in recent months and was recently awarded Peace and Sport's prestigious Coalition for Peace award in recognition of its efforts. To date, the coalition has welcomed endorsements from the governments of Greece, France, Slovenia, Albania, Australia, Kenya, Costa Rica, Namibia and Rwanda, alongside organizations such as the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations.
