Kamal Hassan's Thug Life won't release in Karnataka for now amid Kannada language row
Actor Kamal Haasan has agreed to stall the release of his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka, following the controversy over his recent remarks on Tamil and Kannada. He said that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil' during the audio release event of Thug Life. On Tuesday, Kamal Hassan refused to apologise to the Karnataka High Court for his statement. He said that he had 'no malice', as per LiveLaw. He also proposed to have a dialogue with the Film Chamber in the matter. Earlier during the hearing, the HC rapped the actor for his controversial remark. The court said, 'You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses.' 'There is no apology in it. You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses. The division of this country is on linguistic lines. A public figure cannot make such statements. What has happened because of it is unrest, disharmony. People of Karnataka only asked for an apology. Now you come here seeking protection,' the court added, reported LiveLaw. Senior Advocate Dhyan Chinnappa clarified that Kamal Haasan's statement is being interpreted out of context. He added that the remark was made in the presence of a leading star from the Kannada film industry itself and submitted his client's official response to the matter. However, upon going through the statement, the court remarked that it lacked any form of apology. The court also questioned Kamal Haasan's expertise, 'On what basis have you made the statement, are you a historian, linguist. On what basis did you speak? (sic)' Thug Life is scheduled to hit the theatres across India, except Karnataka, on 5 June for now. Kamal Haasan, who declined to offer an apology, had moved the High Court asking for a direction for the film's release after many objected to it being released in the state. Citing the example of Rajgopal Acharya, who once made a similar statement 75 years ago, the court said that an apology from Kamal Haasan would have been appropriate instead of seeking protection for the release of his film. The bench also said, 'You know the importance of the film, saying it is made by Mani Ratnam, but you cannot make a statement (Apology). 'For your own creation, you want police machinery to support now. Language is a sentiment attached to the people. You are not an ordinary man, you are a public figure. People writing on social media are also being investigated. 'Fundamental right of speech and expression cannot be stretched to hurt sentiments of the masses.'

Karnataka Film Chamber bans Thug Life release, demands apology from Kamal Haasan for his Kannada language remark
Kamal Haasan has recently stirred controversy after his statements during one of Thug Life's promotions backfired. While expressing his love for the Tamil language, the actor remarked that even Kannada was born out of Tamil—a comment that sparked unrest among those who disagreed. Karnataka Film Chamber puts a ban on Thug Life over Kamal Haasan's remark While the senior Tamil star has already clarified his statement made at the event and remarked that it has been blown out of proportion, the matter seems far from dying out. His comment has angered several Kannada language groups and organisations, prompting the Karnataka Film Chamber to ban Thug Life until Kamal Haasan issues an apology. Karnataka's minister for Kannada and culture has stated in a letter to the Film Chamber that these remarks have deeply hurt the Kannada-speaking community. He has urged the authorities to halt the release of Thug Life until a proper apology is issued. Will Thug Life not release in Karnataka? Well, the KFCC has imposed a temporary ban on the release of the Mani Ratnam directorial, demanding an apology from Kamal Haasan on the matter by May 30. The chief of the Karnataka Film Chamber remarked in a press meet, 'We have no sympathy for Kamal Haasan. If he does not issue a public apology today or tomorrow, we will support Kannada activists and will protest fiercely. Under no circumstances will we allow the film's release unless he apologises publicly.' More about Thug Life Coming back to Thug Life, the film also stars Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhirami, and more. As Thug Life and Hari Hara Veera Mallu gear up for release, theatres in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana likely to face complete shutdown from June 1
In a significant development that could affect several South Indian films gearing up for release, including Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, theatres in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely to face a complete shutdown starting June 1. Exhibitors are planning to take stringent steps against the current rental-based revenue model and have reportedly agreed to switch to a percentage-based model. On Sunday, Cinema Express reported the exhibitors held the first joint meeting with their association concerned, and as many as 60 members, including biggies such as Dil Raju and Suresh Babu, were present on the occasion. During the discussion, they also decided to formally issue a request and a bandh notice. The meeting, which attracted attention due to the notable absence of several bigwigs, suggesting a disagreement over the proposal, apparently also saw exhibitors expressing dissatisfaction with the short window between a movie's theatrical and OTT release. The members are reportedly planning to push for a longer window, at least for films that perform well in theatres. Also Read | When Amitabh Bachchan decided not work with Shatrughan Sinha anymore: 'Kaala Patthar was the last nail in the coffin of our friendship' The report further mentioned that the exhibitors would submit a formal representation to the Film Chamber soon, and further discussions would take place before the June 1 deadline. If the stakeholders decide to go ahead with the bandh, only multiplexes that are not affiliated with the association would continue operations. Meanwhile, unlike last year when it witnessed multiple big hits such as Pushpa 2: The Rule, Kalki 2898 AD, Devara: Part 1, Hanu-Man, Tillu Square and Lucky Baskhar, the situation has been unfavourable for the Telugu industry so far this year. Among the major releases, only Sankranthiki Vasthunam and HIT: The Third Case managed to emerge as big hits, while Court ended up as a surprise blockbuster. Although Gowtam Tinnanuri's Vijay Devarakonda-starrer Kingdom was supposed to hit the screens on May 30, its release was postponed recently to July, which now appears to have been a good move by its makers. Nonetheless, if the exhibitors go ahead with the bandh, Thug Life would be the first to be affected as it releases on June 5, followed by Pawan Kalyan's Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, Nagarjuna and Dhanush's Kuberaa and Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa – which would hit the screens on June 12, 20, and 27, respectively – if the issues aren't resolved by then.
