Higher education minister wants private universities to join public varsities in rolling out Dapur Siswa to fight student hunger
KUALA NERUS, Aug 10 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is encouraging private universities nationwide to adopt the Dapur Siswa initiative, which is currently implemented by all public universities.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said that his ministry believes that students at private higher education institutions are also facing financial difficulties, especially amid the rising cost of living.
'I have received information that some private universities have already implemented the Dapur Siswa project. We understand that many students face difficulties and financial challenges, which is why I have instructed the university-level Student Affairs (HEP) divisions to implement this initiative.
'For example, at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), the project provides meals to 300 students daily, to ensure that students in need do not go hungry,' he told reporters after attending the 'In Person With DocZam' session at the university's Dewan Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, Zambry said that he has instructed all university vice-chancellors to be vigilant in identifying students in need, and to provide immediate assistance.
He added that universities should promptly inform the ministry of such cases, to ensure timely delivery of appropriate aid to those students. — Bernama
