Higher education minister wants private universities to join public varsities in rolling out Dapur Siswa to fight student hunger

Malay Maila day ago
KUALA NERUS, Aug 10 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is encouraging private universities nationwide to adopt the Dapur Siswa initiative, which is currently implemented by all public universities.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said that his ministry believes that students at private higher education institutions are also facing financial difficulties, especially amid the rising cost of living.
'I have received information that some private universities have already implemented the Dapur Siswa project. We understand that many students face difficulties and financial challenges, which is why I have instructed the university-level Student Affairs (HEP) divisions to implement this initiative.
'For example, at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), the project provides meals to 300 students daily, to ensure that students in need do not go hungry,' he told reporters after attending the 'In Person With DocZam' session at the university's Dewan Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, Zambry said that he has instructed all university vice-chancellors to be vigilant in identifying students in need, and to provide immediate assistance.
He added that universities should promptly inform the ministry of such cases, to ensure timely delivery of appropriate aid to those students. — Bernama

Anwar: Malaysia-Senegal trade hit RM1.37 billion last year as nations deepen ties in haj, waqf and halal industry

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Malaysia and Senegal are working to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, haj, waqf, and halal industry, which hold significant potential for joint development. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these areas were among the key topics discussed during a courtesy call by Senegal's Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, earlier today. 'We also exchanged views on various regional and international issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East and the African continent,' Anwar posted on Facebook. Fall is in Malaysia for a two-day official visit starting today as a reciprocation of the official visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to Senegal in May 2024. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Senegal reached RM1.37 billion, with Malaysian exports accounting for RM1.35 billion and imports from Senegal valued at RM14.1 million. — Bernama

MOE denies shielding parties in school bullying cases, vows full cooperation in Zara probe

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning.

Marcos says the Philippines can't avoid Taiwan war, would be dragged in ‘kicking and screaming'

MANILA, Aug 11 — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos warned Monday that his country would be dragged 'kicking and screaming' into any war over Taiwan, but must prepare for it. China considers self-ruled Taiwan, Manila's closest neighbour to the north, to be part of its territory and has threatened to seize it by force. 'If there's a war over this it is near us. What are we supposed to do?' Marcos told a news conference, adding: 'We can't ignore it.' 'So inevitably, despite our fervent wish to avoid any confrontation with anybody, anywhere, a war over Taiwan will drag the Philippines, kicking and screaming into the conflict,' he said. 'I hope it doesn't happen... But if it does we have to plan for it already,' he said, citing the large numbers of Filipinos working in Taiwan. In an interview with Indian news agency Firstpost during a state visit to New Delhi last week, Marcos said that in the event of a confrontation between China and the United States over Taiwan, 'there is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it simply because of our physical geographic location'. 'If there is an all-out war, then we will be drawn into it,' Marcos said in the interview, which was uploaded on YouTube. The reported comments angered Beijing, with the Chinese foreign ministry lodging a diplomatic protest and accusing Marcos of 'playing with fire' over the issue. China and the Philippines have engaged in a series of confrontations in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis. Since his election in 2022, Marcos has boosted cooperation between the former US colony and the United States, with which Manila has a mutual defence treaty. — AFP
