Man shot dead by friend after being mistaken for wild boar in hunting tragedy
PETALING JAYA: A local man died after being shot in the head, reportedly by his own friend accidentally while hunting in the forest area of Sungai Dor, Melugu, Sarawak yesterday afternoon. Sri Aman District Police Chief Superintendent Dennis Bunyam said initial investigations found that the suspect, a 46-year-old man and hunting companion of the victim, fired a shot at the victim thinking he was a wild boar. ALSO READ: Elderly man charged with murder of friend According to Utusan Borneo, he mentioned that the 40-year-old victim was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel who arrived shortly after the incident. 'Investigations revealed that the suspect did not possess a valid firearm license to conduct hunting activities in that area,' he said in a statement yesterday. The police also seized the shotgun used in the incident. The suspect is now remanded until May 30 to assist in investigations under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence, and is also being investigated under the Firearms Act 1960 for possession of an unlicensed firearm. 'The public is advised to always comply with laws related to firearm ownership and usage, and to ensure hunting activities are conducted with valid permits and licenses from the authorities,' said Dennis.

Police shoot dead armed suspect in Bayan Lepas; arrest eight others tied to 25 robberies across Penang
GEORGE TOWN, May 15 — A 35-year-old man was shot dead by police early this morning after he opened fire at officers during a crime prevention operation in Bayan Lepas, Penang. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the incident occurred at about 4.05am when officers approached a car parked along Lintang Bukit Jambul. 'Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were on patrol when they noticed the vehicle and moved in to conduct a check,' he said in a statement. Hamzah said the officers identified themselves, but the man suddenly exited the vehicle and fired at them. 'The police returned fire in self-defence,' he said, adding that the suspect was killed at the scene. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a pistol with three rounds of ammunition, an iron rod, two rattan sticks, two machetes, 15 packets of suspected methamphetamine weighing about 22.5g, a signal jammer, and various tools and clothing believed to be used in housebreaking activities. Hamzah said the deceased was believed to be a Malaysian with prior records for 19 criminal and 15 drug-related offences. Following the incident, police arrested seven men and one woman in connection with the case. All eight are believed to have been involved in criminal activities with the deceased. 'Four of the suspects have prior criminal records, while the remaining four do not,' he said. With the arrests, police believe they have solved 25 cases of robbery, housebreaking and laundromat break-ins around Penang, involving estimated losses of approximately RM500,000. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960, which provides for a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment.

The 35-year-old suspect is believed to be part of a group responsible for the crime spree, which resulted in losses estimated at RM500,000. Following the 4.15am shootout yesterday, eight other people, including a woman, were picked up at several locations across the state. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said four of the eight arrested had criminal records, adding that all the suspects were remanded to facilitate investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 for possession or carrying a firearm and ammunition without licence or permit. 'With the arrest, we have successfully solved 25 cases of robbery, house break-in and launderette theft in Penang, with total losses and damages amounting to RM500,000,' he said. Before the shootout, a team from the state Criminal Investigation Department was on a crime prevention patrol when they came across a luxury car along Jalan Lintang Bukit Jambul, Bayan Lepas. 'The patrol team approached the car and identified themselves to the driver. He alighted from the car and started shooting at the police vehicle. 'The policemen were forced to open fire in self-defence. The man died at the scene,' he said, adding that the body had been sent to the Forensics Department at Penang Hospital. Comm Hamzah said the man had a record of 19 criminal offences and 15 drug-related crimes. A search of the man's car yielded an FNP-45 pistol with three bullets, a steel bar, two wooden sticks, two machetes, 22.5g of methamphetamine, a signal jammer, housebreaking tools and clothing.

Deadly shootout ends reign of notorious robbery suspect
GEORGE TOWN: A man suspected to be involved in armed robbery, house break-ins and self-service laundrette thefts in Penang, with total losses amounting to RM500,000, was killed in a shootout at Jalan Lintang Bukit Jambul, Bayan Lepas, near here today. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said a team from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), who were conducting a crime prevention operation, encountered a suspicious-looking BMW car at about 4am. "The police approached the car and identified themselves, but the man driving the vehicle suddenly exited and opened fire on the police vehicle. "In response, the police returned fire in self-defence, and upon further inspection, found that the 35-year-old local man had died at the scene," he said in a statement today. Hamzah said a search of the man's car uncovered a FNP-45 pistol with three bullets, a metal rod, two wooden sticks, two machetes, 22.5g of methamphetamine, a signal jammer, various housebreaking tools and clothing. He said further checks revealed the suspect had 19 previous criminal records, 15 related to narcotics and that his body had been sent to the Forensics Department at Penang Hospital for further action. Following the incident, he said police arrested seven men and a woman, in their 20s and 40s, who are believed to be connected to the suspect's criminal activities at several locations around Penang today. "Police believe that with these arrests, we have solved 25 cases of robbery, house break-ins, and self-service laundrette thefts that occurred in Penang, involving total losses of RM500,000," he said. He added that four of the eight arrested suspects have prior criminal records, and all of them will be remanded to assist in investigations. "An investigation paper has been opened under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960. Further investigations are ongoing," he said. – BERNAMA
