Josh Hutcherson Wields Mask Mechanic in ‘Five Nights at Freddy's 2' Trailer
The fight for survival continues in Five Nights at Freddy's 2. The sequel, based on the popular video game, hits theaters on Dec. 5 with Josh Hutcherson returning as Mike Schmidt in the aftermath of a brutal supernatural showdown in the first film. In the latest Five Nights at Freddy's 2 trailer, Mike is a little more prepared, but there are only so many ways to get ready for a battle with possessed animatronics. The film picks up one year after the events at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's. 'The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town's first-ever Fazfest,' a brief synopsis of the film reads. Vanessa Shelly (Elizabeth Lail) also returns, seemingly recovered from the coma she ended up in at the end of the previous film. Meanwhile, Mike's younger sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), still hasn't learned the truth about her unusual friends. 'There's no way that'll work,' he says in the clip before picking it up anyway. It's his only shot, and he can't afford to miss it. 'Anyone can survive five nights,' the tagline for the movie reads. 'This time, there will be no second chances.' Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will also star Theodus Crane, Matthew Lillard, Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, McKenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich. Emma Tammi will direct. 'As a narrative that pretends to plumb the dark absence of missing children, however, Five Nights at Freddy's is curiously inert, unwilling to get under your skin even as it grows dense with explanations of what's happening,' Rolling Stone wrote in a review of Five Nights at Freddy's. 'It's unfair to compare the menacing robot bear to Freddy Krueger, the iconic kid-killer who shares his name.' Here's The New ‘Five Nights At Freddy's 2' Trailer And Its Release Date
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Five Nights at Freddy's was an underestimated video game adaptation, where the traditional Hollywood class did not seem to understand its massive appeal among Gen Z. The first film performed so well a sequel was auto-greenlit, and now we have our first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which you can see below: The trailer has already gotten a million views in its first three hours with a wild 166,000 to 750 like-to-dislike ratio. That's reflected in my entire gaming timeline being filled with fans combing through every second of the trailer and overwhelmingly getting hyped about the various bits and pieces they've found from the games, praising how they're apparently being adapted. It cannot be overstated just how big of a gaming/horror success the original Five Nights at Freddy's was. The film made $291 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, a 14x multiplier and an industry smash hit. And like many horror properties, the places the game has gone means that there are likely unlimited paths toward future sequels. If they can get these movies out every two years, which seems possible, that's printing money. Five Nights 1 was out in October 2023, while Five Nights at Freddy's 2's release date is December 5, 2025, just over two years later. Even if the second film performs worse than the first, the amount it will make compared to the low budget it may now have should still be wildly profitable. You can make less money and increase costs a bit and this would still be considered a huge hit. Compare this to one of the best horror movies of 2025, Companion, which made a whopping $36 million worldwide. Heart Eyes, also this year, made $33 million. Bring Her Back made $22 million. The only horror movie rocketing out of this class is Sinners with $365 million and I mean, that's not even that much more than the original Five Nights was. Movie or Minecraft, huge, huge earners. It's just not the same thing with that kind of budget and honestly, a more passionate fanbase than either of those who will turn out to ensure this movie makes money, even if it's a few hundred million less than those others. If you want to read the absurdly long, just-released synopsis for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, you can read that below: --- "They're not just at Freddy's anymore. In 2023, Blumhouse's box-office horror phenomenon Five Nights at Freddy's, based on the blockbuster game series by Scott Cawthon, became the highest-grossing horror film of the year. Now, a shocking new chapter of animatronic terror begins. One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town's first ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike's 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends. But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy's, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades. The cast of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 includes returning co-stars Theodus Crane as Jeremiah and the legendary Matthew Lillard as William Afton. The film features new characters played by Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone, Pennyworth), Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park, Seinfeld), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters franchise, Annabelle Comes Home) and horror icon Skeet Ulrich (Scream, Riverdale). Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi and is written by game series creator Scott Cawthon." Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
