"Phasmophobia" Movie in Works

Yara Sameh Blumhouse Productions has set its sights on another horror video game to adapt to the big screen, developing a feature based on 'Phasmophobia,' the first-person paranormal puzzle title that became a viral sensation during the coronavirus pandemic. The film adaptation will be produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, in association with Kinetic Games Limited. First released in early access in 2020, 'Phasmophobia' became a social media fixation as Twitch streamers and YouTubers quickly took to the multiplayer ghost-hunting video game. Developed and released by Kinetic Games Limited, the title was a breakthrough hit for the indie banner, becoming the best-selling video game on Steam for several weeks through the final months of that year. It has been ported to several consoles and has sold more than 23 million copies globally in the time since. 'Phasmophobia' was also a critical darling, taking the prize in the category of best debut game at the 2020 Game Awards. The project was unveiled at the first-ever 'Business of Fear' event in Hollywood on Tuesday, which featured Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum and president Abhijay Prakash as speakers. It comes as Blumhouse's latest video game adaptation, following their 2023 title 'Five Nights at Freddy's' — another film based on a streamer-popularized horror game. That Universal release grossed $291 million worldwide — an especially impressive figure, considering it had a simultaneous streaming debut on Peacock in North America. A sequel, 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2,' will be released in theaters on December 5. Blumhouse also sports a game division, with upcoming titles including 'Eyes of Hellfire' and 'Sleep Awake.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be ‘a little more action-packed', teases Matthew Lillard

Mathew Lillard has teased 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' will be "a little more action-packed". The 55-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as the sinister William Afton in the upcoming movie - which is based on the horror video game franchise of the same name by developer Scott Cawthon - and has now teased 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' may have "more jump scares" and feature more action than its 2023 predecessor. When asked Lillard whether the flick would be bigger than the original, he said: "I do think that the movie learned first time around, I think Scott, as a primary storyteller, listened to the audience. [It's] what he does best. He knows that community so well. "And I think that he's responded with a script that … maybe it has more jump scares. Maybe it's a little more action-packed. I don't know. I'm not here to say 'yes it is', or 'no it's not'. "But I do think the fans are gonna love this next movie, and I think that they're gonna be really excited come December." The 'Scream' star added "the storytelling's been amped up a lot" on 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2', even though the flick is "still sort of an independent little horror movie". He explained: "I think the storytelling's been amped up a lot. I don't feel like the budget's gone through the roof. There are $250 million, $300 million movies out there, $500 million movies. "I mean, God knows what 'Avengers' cost, but we are certainly not that. We're still sort of an independent little horror movie." 'Five Nights at Freddy's' - which was directed by Emma Tammi and starred Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail and Lillard - follows Mike Schmidt as he gets roped into working as a security guard at the long-abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, only for him to discover the old animatronics come to life at night - and have violent intentions. Hutcherson previously teased 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' would be "much bigger" and "scarier" than the first film. In an interview with Esquire, 'The Hunger Games' star said: "There's more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way. "We're finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded. "That's something that I really think that we all fought for in the first film, because this world that was created in 'Five Nights at Freddy's', it's so out-there. It's so over-the-top and wacky, in a way, that to find the emotional truth of the characters was gonna be what was gonna work." Hutcherson added fans of the game series would "flip for it" because director Emma Tammi was going to have "a lot of fun" with the source material. He said: "I think the fans are gonna flip for it. It's gonna be a lot of fun with the source. It's gonna be scarier, too, actually."

‘Minecraft' was a hit. Here are 7 other video game adaptations to get excited about

Editor's Note: A version of this story was published in October 2023. Much like 2023's 'Super Mario Bros. Movie,' this month's 'A Minecraft Movie' seemingly came out of nowhere to score box office gold. But no one should have been surprised: video game adaptations are an increasingly vital part of the entertainment market, which some say is set to replace superheroes as 'Hollywood's dominant intellectual property.' Not all adaptations of popular games are guaranteed success – see last year's 'Borderlands,' in addition to 2022's 'Uncharted' and 2018's 'Tomb Raider' reboot. Critics and fans alike found those movies faltering in their ability to capture the story and magic of the gameplay in their respective source material. But the ones that work, predictably, are set to spawn sequels and new seasons of TV, with new installments set for 'Mario,' 'Mortal Kombat,' 'Sonic the Hedgehog,' 'The Angry Birds' and many more. (Bonus: The highly anticipated Season 2 of 'The Last of Us' premieres this weekend.) What else is coming down the pike by way of video game adaptations? Here are several more upcoming movies and television shows based on video games, in no particular order: (Note: CNN and Warner Bros. Pictures, which produced 'Minecraft,' are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.) 'The Legend of Zelda' (2027) The announcement that this storied game franchise – casually referred to as 'Zelda' in shorthand – would be coming to theaters in 2027 as a live action film almost broke the internet last month. And for good reason: Zelda games are right up there with Super Mario Bros. in terms of seminal video game source material. The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, who helmed the 'Maze Runner' film franchise. 'Until Dawn' (April 25) As seen with many titles below like 'Five Nights at Freddy's' and 'Silent Hill,' the overlap between video games and horror content is wide and rich, like in this terrifying game-turned-fright flick out later this month. Featuring Odessa A'zion of 2022's 'Hellraiser' reboot, 'Until Dawn' follows a group of people caught in a time loop who must survive until daybreak to get out alive. It's part 'Groundhog Day,' part 'Cabin in the Woods,' with a little 'Thir13en Ghosts' thrown in. 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' (December 5) 'Five Nights at Freddy's' from 2023 successfully cashed in on the popularity of the beloved survival video game that inspired it, giving way to this creepy animatronic horror sequel. The new installment will welcome back Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio and 'Scream' alum Matthew Lillard, with Mckenna Grace and Wayne Knight (of 'Jurassic Park' and 'Seinfeld' fame) coming on board as newcomers. 'Return to Silent Hill' (TBA) The survival horror puzzle game franchise will return to theaters with 'Return to Silent Hill.' Christophe Gans, helmer of the Radha Mitchell-starring 'Silent Hill' from 2006, is back to direct the sequel, inspired by the 2001 game 'Silent Hill 2.' The movie will follow James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) as he is drawn back to the creepy titular town by a letter seemingly from a past love. 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu' sequel (TBA) Though not the character's first foray outside of video games, Pikachu will reportedly grace screens again in a sequel to the live-action 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu' film from 2019 that featured the voice of Ryan Reynolds. A second movie was announced shortly before the first debuted at the box office, however, whether or not the original star-studded cast will return remains unclear. 'God of War Ragnarok' (TBA) Amazon Studios plans on making the widely-acclaimed fantasy, third-person story game 'God of War Ragnarok' into a television series. The show is expected to closely mirror the 2022 game, in which Kratos the Greek God of War and his son Atreus journey against the backdrop of Norse mythology to honor Kratos' fallen wife. 'Stray' (TBA) What could be better than wandering around a vaguely dystopian, cyberpunk city as a friendly feline trying to piece together clues as you find your way home? Yes – this does sound a bit like this year's Oscar-winner for best animated feature, 'Flow.' Annapurna Pictures, whose video game division developed the popular 2022 game 'Stray,' is currently developing an animated feature based off the beloved title.

‘A Minecraft Movie' smashes box office expectations with $157 million opening weekend

The blockbuster adaption of the 2011 video game 'Minecraft' shattered box office estimates, grossing $157 million domestically, and marking the biggest opening weekend of the year. Industry analysts initially projected Warner Bros. Pictures' 'A Minecraft Movie' would gross $60 million before adjusting that estimate to about $100 million. Warner Brothers Discovery is the parent company of CNN. 'This is the first major over-performance,' Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNN. 'A Minecraft Movie' surged past the opening weekend of Disney's 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which had been the top opener of 2025 with an opening weekend of $88.5 million. 'Pre-sales and interest accelerated in a remarkable way during the run-up to opening night,' Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, told CNN in an email. Robbins noted that many college students and teenagers were on spring break during the movie's opening, which also helped some markets. Conservative box-office estimates for 'A Minecraft Movie' were likely due to mixed reactions to trailers. But this video game adaptation appeals to broad audiences, not critics, according to box office analyst David A. Gross of FranchiseRe. 'When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections,' Gross said. Video game movies are an increasingly popular genre, from Universal Pictures' 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' which opened with $146 million in April 2023, to the October 2023 debut of 'Five Nights at Freddy's' ($80 million) and Paramount Pictures' 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' ($72 million) in April 2022. 'A Minecraft Movie' is now the biggest domestic opening weekend for a film based on a video game, according to Comscore. 'There is a treasure trove of storytelling and (intellectual property) in that arena, making it a sweet spot where the industry can meet young moviegoers and general audiences who've become more selective,' Robbins said. Video game adaptations have performed best when rated PG, according to Dergarabedian, who noted that PG-rated movies outgrossed PG-13 movies last year. The opening weekend for 'A Minecraft Movie' provides a much-needed boost to the overall box office. Industry earnings are down 5% in 2025 but had fallen 13% before the release of 'A Minecraft Movie,' according to Comscore. Robbins described the first quarter of 2025 as a 'historically slow movie-going season.' While March 2024 had major film releases, including 'Dune: Part Two' and 'Kung Fu Panda 4,' the first quarter of 2025 was absent of high-grossing blockbusters. There is industry optimism for a strong second quarter with Disney's 'Thunderbolts,' a Marvel movie, set to open on May 2, followed by Paramount's 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' (May 23), and Warner Bros.' 'F1' (June 27). 'We're finally going to see light at the end of the tunnel after a pretty dismal March,' said Dergarabedian.
