Legal vs illegal: Oshkosh Police Department shares what fireworks residents can set off
OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the Oshkosh Police Department issued a reminder on Monday morning as to what kind of fireworks are legal and illegal for community members to have and set off. Oshkosh YMCA Mud Run aids youth growth and financial help According to a release, and per the fireworks ordinance seen in the City of Oshkosh Municipal Codes – Chapter 13, section 13-6 (C) (1), the following types of fireworks are permitted/not permitted to be set off by those in the community: Sparklers Stationary cones and fountains Toy snakes Smoke bombs Caps Noise makers Confetti poppers (with less than ½ grain of explosive) Roman candles Firecrackers Bottle rockets Mortars Anything that explodes or leaves the ground Only individuals/groups with a governmental-issued permit are allowed these types of fireworks. Officials say the Oshkosh Police Department will be making several inspections of locations that sell fireworks as a way to make sure illegal fireworks are not being bought or sold in the City of Oshkosh by individuals without the proper permits. Police also plan to respond to firework complaints by making contact with city residents to determine if a violation was committed. Appleton to honor 'Old Glory,' celebrate Flag Day Parade on June 14 Those caught setting off illegal fireworks will have the fireworks seized from them and could face the following potential fines or punishments, depending on how many times they have committed the offense. 1st Offense: $100 + $5 Court Costs = $105 2nd Offense: $150 + $5 Court Costs = $155 3rd Offense: $500 + $5 Court Costs = $505 (For Third or subsequent offense within 36 months of conviction) 1st Offense: $125 + $170 Court Costs = $295 2nd Offense: $225 + $196 Court Costs = $421 3rd Offense: $1000 + $397.50 Court Costs = $1,397.50 (For Third or subsequent offense within 36 months of conviction) Officials also advise being careful and considerate with the use of fireworks, as while they can be enjoyable for many community members, they can have a negative effect on others in the community, such as individuals with PTSD or other noise sensitivities and pets. Appleton to honor ‘Old Glory,' celebrate Flag Day Parade on June 14
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The City of Appleton is set to continue its longstanding tradition on June 14, the 74th Appleton Flag Day Parade! The celebration, which attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from throughout the country to Appleton, has honored 'Old Glory' on the second Saturday of every June since 1950. 'There's an unparalleled amount of pride and patriotism in the Fox Cities,' said Corey Otis, Chairperson for the City of Appleton Parades Committee. 'The Flag Day Parade provides a showcase for our community's ingenuity and artistry as well as a reason to come together and celebrate with friends and family.' More than 600 Wisconsin Guard soldiers ready for deployment with sendoff in Oshkosh The theme of the 74th Appleton Flag Day Parade is 'Honor, Courage, Commitment': these are the core values of the United States Marine Corps and Navy. Every year, the Flag Day Parade honors a branch of the military, but this year, Appleton will spotlight both the United States Marine Corps and Navy, who each celebrates 250 years of service in 2025. The Parade Grand Marshal, as always, is the United States Flag. The escort to the U.S. Flag is United States Marine Veteran Bob Lace of Neenah. Lace, 83, served during the Vietnam War era, and he is well known as the 'one-man honor guard' at the Memorial Day and Flag Day Parades in Appleton. This year's Honorary Parade Marshal is Retired Rear Admiral Jerry Clusen, a native of Manitowoc. Clusen, a Navy Mustang, served in 14 ranks throughout his 42-year career in the United States Navy Reserve. Then, at 11:30 a.m., Houdini Plaza will host a pre-parade concert by the Marine Forces Reserve Band prior to the 1st Brigade Band at noon. The Flag Day Parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and North Oneida Street, with the route traveling through State Street, College Avenue, and Drew Street. Notable entries in the 74th Appleton Flag Day Parade include: Nearly 20 musical units, including Navy Band Great Lakes, Marine Forces Reserve Band, 1st Brigade Band, Americanos Alumni Association, The 2/5th's Party Band, Big Top Brass, and The Badger Band (featuring members of the University of Wisconsin Band). Local marching bands, including all three Appleton public high schools, Valley Troubadours, New Horizons, Lakeside Lutheran High School, the Lutheran Vanguard, and Appleton City Band. Veterans organizations, tributes to the Armed Forces, patriotic floats, marching units, antique and collector vehicles, horses, clowns, scooters, fire trucks, tractors, and much, much more! Back for more: The Dancing Grannies will return to the Flag Day Parade along with Golden Gals MKE. Pierce Manufacturing and WHBY will hand out free flags to spectators just before the parade begins. The celebration continues after the parade. In Houdini Plaza, The Badger Band, featuring members of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, will play music from the 'Fifth Quarter.' 74th Appleton Flag Day Parade set to honor both U.S. Marine Corps and Navy for 250th birthday
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The nation's oldest 'Flag Day' Parade is just a few months and the deadline to apply is less than two weeks from now, with applications required by Tax Day, April 15. Appleton's Flag Day Parade has been around since 1950, and it annually honors a different military branch; however, this year's will be different and extra special. Tru by Hilton celebrates grand opening in Oshkosh 'The theme is 'Honor, Courage, Commitment,' which is the motto of the Marine Corps and Navy,' Appleton Parades Committee Chairperson Corey Otis said. 'Both are celebrating their 250th birthdays this year, so we're going to put them in the spotlight and honor both branches.' The parade annually gets over 50,000 viewers and participants from throughout the country. 'Flag Day is a celebration and a great time to come out with friends, family, and neighbors to celebrate everything great about America,' Otis said. Door County residents speak out about proposed development for iconic golf course Otis added that with applications still open, they're looking for more service organizations to volunteer and help celebrate in the iconic parade. The 74th Appleton Flag Day Parade, labeled as the biggest and best Flag Day Parade in the country is scheduled for Saturday, June 14. 'The Appleton Flag Day Parade is more than a tradition, it's a powerful reminder of what brings us together as Americans,' said Corey Otis, Chairperson for the City of Appleton Parades Committee. 'When we celebrate the red, white, and blue, we not only salute the strengths of our nation but also the unity of our community.'
