Severe storms, flooding, and winter weather alerts in effect in New Mexico tonight
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Very active weather will continue into Tuesday across parts of New Mexico. Heavy rain and heavy snow will fall in parts of the state tonight. It's been another stormy day for parts of New Mexico on Monday with widespread showers and storms. Severe storms have developed in southeast New Mexico, where a Tornado Watch is in effect until 4 AM Tuesday. Snow has also been falling in the northern mountains today, where places like Angel Fire have already picked up several inches of snowfall and the Taos Ski Valley has measured over a foot. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains through Wednesday. Tonight, more rain and mountain snow will develop in eastern and northern New Mexico. Storms in eastern parts of the state will drop very heavy rainfall, especially in northeast New Mexico, where a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening. Widespread rain will fall there overnight tonight, with scattered showers and storms on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, heavy snow will fall in the northern mountains. 8″ to 12″ of snow will fall above about 9,000′, with up to two feet of snowfall across mountain peaks. Snow levels may even briefly drop down to as low as Los Alamos, Taos, Las Vegas, and the foothills of Santa Fe early Tuesday morning. Snow levels will lift to around 8,000′ in the afternoon as more showers and thunderstorms develop across the state again. The threat of severe weather is much lower. Another round of isolated showers and storms will return Wednesday afternoon across most of the state. Temperatures will be staying cool. Drier air moves into the state Thursday and Friday, along with warmer temperatures. A few spotty afternoon showers are still possible mainly over the mountains. A weak storm system will move into New Mexico Saturday, bringing a chance for afternoon showers and storms to the northwestern half of the state. FLASH FLOOD THREAT — Enjoy the window of dry weather while it lasts! I don't like the look of some of the higher resolution model guidance this afternoon. Here's the latest on the growing risk for flash flooding late Tuesday-Friday morning. Exact details still to be fine-tuned; however, the threat for flash flooding is sizeable Tuesday-Thursday. Flash Flood Watch issued. Right now, the general idea is 3-6″ across much of south Louisiana & Mississippi from 7PM Tuesday – 7PM Thursday. Hot spots of 8-10+' likely. Life-threatening flash flooding possible in locations where repetitive, 'training' storms cause excessive runoff in a short period of time. Know your flood terminology: What Flood Watches, Warnings and Emergencies really mean
Flooding is one of the deadliest weather hazards in the U.s. each year, and understanding flood alerts issued by National Weather Service meteorologists can be lifesaving. These include Flood Watches, Flood Warnings, Flash Flood Warnings and the rare Flash Flood Emergency. Each alert carries a different level of urgency and is meant to help protect lives and property. According to NOAA data, an average of 127 people die from flooding each year, with nearly half of those deaths involving vehicles. 7 Facts You Should Know About Flash Floods A Flood Watch can be issued by National Weather Service meteorologists hours or even days in advance of a potential flooding event. While a watch does not guarantee flooding will occur, it signals a high likelihood based on forecasts, current conditions and recent rainfall accumulation. These alerts typically cover large geographic areas and may remain in effect for several days, especially during prolonged weather systems like tropical cyclones or atmospheric rivers. "The occurrence of flooding is neither certain nor imminent. Persons in the watch area are advised to check flood action plans, stay informed, and be prepared to take necessary actions if a warning is issued or flooding is observed. A Flash Flood Watch may also be issued for a potential dam break," the NWS stated. Flood Watches are usually depicted in a dark green color on weather maps. Flood Watch, Warning And Emergency: Here Are The Differences That Could Save Your Life A Flood Warning or a Flash Flood Warning is issued when flooding is either imminent or occurring. Heavy rainfall or flooded waterways can lead to the issuance of these alerts, which are usually only posted for a limited region. Flash Flood Warnings are issued for events caused by heavy, sudden rainfall, while Flood Warnings are issued for events that occur more gradually, such as river rises. The NWS issues more than 4,000 Flash Flood Warnings every year due to the dangers posed to lives and properties. Buildings, driveways and other infrastructure can increase the amount of water runoff by reducing the amount of rain absorbed by the ground. According to NWS forecasters, just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet and a foot of floodwater can carry a car away. Flood Warnings are usually depicted in a light green color on weather maps. How To Watch Fox Weather A Flash Flood Emergency is the highest level of flood alert issued by the National Weather Service and is reserved only for life-threatening situations. To warrant this designation, catastrophic flooding must be ongoing with the potential for devastating consequences. The NWS began issuing Flash Flood Emergency alerts in 2003, and each year, only a few dozen are typically issued. According to NOAA statistics, less than 1% of all flood alerts are classified as Flash Flood Emergencies. A record 92 emergencies were issued in 2024, largely due to Hurricane Helene, which impacted communities from the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley. Cold Tuesday; rain chances return Wednesday
A freeze warning in effect until 10 a.m. These cold temps could harm sensitive plants, so be sure they have been covered or brought inside. It's a very cold start to our Tuesday morning. Temperatures have dropped into the mid-20s, with wind chills making it feel like the teens. Make sure to grab your winter coat before heading out the door. We'll stay well below average through the afternoon. There will be plenty of sunshine, but temperatures will remain chilly. Highs will only reach the mid 40s, and even at the warmest part of the day, wind chills will keep it feeling like the upper 30s. Flood Warnings continue in many counties around central Indiana, south of Indianapolis, due to high flood waters from recent rain. While many rivers have crested and waters are slowly receding, it will take some time before things return to normal. Bartholomew County remains under a Flash Flood Watch until noon, with the potential for failure of the Youth Camp Dam. Clouds will begin to build in overnight ahead of rain chances for Wednesday and Thursday. Scattered showers will develop by tomorrow afternoon and stick around through Thursday, though there will be plenty of dry breaks in between. Wednesday will be the wetter day of the two, with a few isolated, non-severe thunderstorms possible late Wednesday night. Most areas can expect a few tenths of an inch of rain, though some localized spots could see half an inch or more. Good news for the weekend! It's looking fantastic.
