Samsung reveals why the Galaxy Z Fold 7 didn't get a bigger battery
Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung has reportedly revealed why the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a bigger battery while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has the same capacity. The company said that most Flip users wanted a bigger battery, while the Fold 7 had other priorities. This comes as rivals to the Galaxy Z Fold series offer much bigger batteries and other impressive features. Samsung has just launched its new foldable phones, and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 brings a welcome battery upgrade. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn't offer a battery bump, and Samsung has reportedly offered a reason for this decision. SamMobile asked Samsung why the Galaxy Z Flip 7 received a battery capacity increase (from 4,000mAh to 4,300mAh) while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 stuck with the same 4,400mAh battery seen on 2021's Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Galaxy maker told the outlet that 'most' Galaxy Z Flip users wanted a bigger battery, while the Z Fold 7 had bigger priorities, like improved cameras, a wider cover screen, and a slim and light design. Hadlee Simons / Android Authority If anything, I'm guessing Samsung's main reason for skipping a capacity upgrade is that it wanted a slim and light form factor. After all, the Z Fold 7 is among the thinnest book-style foldables on the market, and it's also the lightest one. This design is something I praised in my hands-on article, after years of Fold models that lagged behind the competition in this regard. It also stands to reason that Samsung wasn't ready to embrace silicon-carbon batteries just yet, which enable much higher capacities in rival foldables. The HONOR Magic V5 has a 5,820mAh battery, while the vivo X Fold 5 has a 6,000mAh battery. Both of these phones also have competitive camera hardware and relatively wide cover screens. In saying so, Samsung's own charging cycle figures suggest that its phones could offer better long-term battery health. In any event, I'd argue that a bigger battery is more important for the Fold line than it is for the Flip series. The Flip phones have a small cover screen that sips energy, while the Fold devices have a smartphone-sized cover display and a tablet-sized folding screen. At least Samsung didn't pull a Galaxy S25 Edge and reduce the battery capacity in the name of a thin form factor. Samsung's New Foldables Give the Keys to Google AI and Say, ‘Here, You Drive.'
Samsung's newest generation of Fold and Flip folding phones is here, and this year, it has quite a bit to parade around. The Galaxy Fold 7, for example, is hella thin and almost as slim as a Galaxy S25 Ultra when it's folded up, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a bigger front-facing screen that spans 4.1 inches. However much the foldables have going on in the hardware department, there's even more going on inside with AI. The only difference is that Samsung has almost nothing to do with those AI developments. This year, the inside part—in particular AI—is all about Google and its many, many, Gemini features. In fact, during Samsung's keynote for the foldables, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services at Google, Rick Osterloh, even took the stage to announce just how deep its Gemini integration is. First, everyone's favorite AI feature (or at least the most useful), Circle to Search, is getting a dose of Google's AI Mode. This will help Circle to Search's multimodal capabilities, paving the way for more nuanced answers to questions about images and products. I've had a little time with Google's AI Mode, and I think that whether it's actually better at searching is up for debate, but more nuance is certainly what Google is aiming at here, and it's definitely moving the amount of AI in the Z Fold 7 forward. Google also announced that, starting with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, you'll be able to long-press the power button and have Gemini take a gander at your screen while you're scrolling. With live access to what you're looking at, you can ask Gemini for help on stuff like product comparisons. Per Google: 'Say you're deciding which suitcase to buy for your upcoming trip: Open Gemini Live, share your screen, scroll through the different products you're considering, and ask, 'which one should I choose based on material quality?'' And the applications don't stop there. Google says you can also wield Gemini Live on your camera to do stuff like coach you through cutting your bangs or styling a pair of glasses. Whether you want AI to do that type of thing for you is entirely up to you, but again, it's certainly a much deeper integration of Gemini into Samsung's foldable experience—one that's extending to native Samsung apps. Gemini Live is also being unleashed on Calendar, Reminder, and Notes, according to Google, which feels like a very deep partnership. In fact, partnership may not even be the word, actually. At this point Samsung's foldables feel like they're just as much Google phones as they are Samsung ones. I'm less sure about what that means for Samsung, but for Google, the prospect of being able to put Gemini features in front of that many eyeballs must be very enticing. Google, as you may have noticed this past I/O has been pouring resources into expanding Gemini with several new models and even AI subscriptions that group Google's latest AI tools into one monthly fee. Google is offering Galaxy Z Fold 7 users that subscription for free, by the way—at least for the first six months. After that it'll cost $20 per month, unfortunately. But even if Google's AI features are more advanced than the competition, and even if they are actually useful, Google still needs to find an audience, and that's exactly what Samsung can offer it. The biggest hurdle for AI features in phones is still getting people to actually adopt them, and to do that, you need to get them in front of people, which Pixel phones aren't really doing. To actually take off, those features also have to be useful, and that remains to be seen. We have our Galaxy Fold 7 in hand, so we'll have more to say on that soon, but until then, Samsung's newest foldables feel like a big win for Google.

Everything you want to know about the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, and Flip 7 FE just leaked
Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR Specs for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, and Flip 7 FE have leaked. The information reportedly comes from official Samsung promotional materials. The company's foldables appear to sport disappointingly small batteries. Samsung is set to reveal its latest foldables at Galaxy Unpacked this week. While the showcase is scheduled for June 9, it doesn't look like you'll have to wait until Wednesday to learn more about the company's new hardware. Some leaked promotional material may have spilled the beans on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, and Flip 7 FE. Roland Quandt of WinFuture went on Bluesky today to share the specs of Samsung's next foldables. According to Quandt, these details were taken from 'official Samsung promo materials.' In the image below, you can see all the information you need, including screen size, colors, and storage. Notably, it appears the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a 4,400mAh battery. That's a bit disappointing considering OPPO's Find N5 packs in a 5,600mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE are said to sport 4,300mAh and 4,000mAh batteries, respectively. Compare that to their biggest rival, the Motorola Razr Ultra, which houses a 4,700mAh battery. Trusted tipster Arsene Lupin also provided spec sheets for all three devices. However, these spec sheets go further in-depth, revealing details like screen resolution and technology (FHD+, Dynamic AMOLED 2X), the processor (Exynos 2500), and so on. With all of this information, there's not much else for Samsung to surprise us with. However, we do still need to know how much Samsung is going to charge for these handsets. Samsung Unpacked July 2025: what to expect
Peter, 07 July 2025 The next Galaxy Unpacked is this Wednesday, July 9. It will be held in Brooklyn, New York and will be livestreamed on Samsung's site and on YouTube. The event is scheduled to start at 14:00 UTC. Foldables and watches incoming Samsung's middle of the year Galaxy Unpacked event is focused on the next generation of foldables, but also brings new smartwatches. This year, we're waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE from the foldable family and Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Watch8 Ultra from the wearable family. Let's have a closer look at each. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 promises an 'Ultra' experience, though it won't be branded as such. The phone is expected to feature a 200MP main camera (similar to the S25 Ultra and Z Fold Special edition). However, the other cameras will be mostly the same – 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide. The two selfie cameras will be 10MP on the cover display and a 4MP under-display module inside. Samsung has teased AI features for the camera as AI remains a big part of the Galaxy identity. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 live photos With this generation, the focus is on slimming down the Z Fold – Samsung says it will be the thinnest and lightest horizontal foldable yet. It is yet to officially confirm the dimensions, but rumored info suggests 8.9mm folded and 4.2mm unfolded and 215g. We've heard numbers as low as 3.9mm unfolded, but this might be a question of which part is measured. For comparison, the Z Fold6 is 12.1mm and 5.6mm, weighing 239g, so this is a major redesign. Even the Z Fold Special edition is 10.6mm and 4.9mm. Note that the camera island is not included in these measurements. Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Fold7 side by side However, the slender build comes at a cost – the phone will have the same 4,400mAh battery capacity as its predecessor. The EU energy label has revealed that this would be enough for 40 hours and 28 minutes on a single charge, slightly longer than the S25 Edge. The battery will go at least 2,000 charge cycles before dropping to 80% of its original capacity. That label also showed that the Galaxy Z Fold7 will have an IP48 dust and water resistance rating, which is no longer the top spec for a foldable. It will have excellent drop resistance and average repairability. The chipset is no surprise – we've already seen the foldable run Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. We think that it will be equipped with 12GB of RAM and it will have three storage tiers: 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Leaked prices show that the base model will be around €2,200 and the 512GB option around €2,300 – that's a €200 increase over the previous model. Of course, the pre-order perks will most likely include a free storage upgrade. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 colorways. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 will be available in three colors, Blue Shadow, Silver Shadow and Jet Black, plus several colors that will be exclusive to units sold through Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE Rising costs are a concern, so Samsung is expected to launch a cheaper flip foldable this year, which will borrow much of its design from last year's Z Flip6. The premium model will be the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7. It will have an edge-to-edge cover display, 4.1', compared to the 'folder'-shaped 3.4' display of its predecessor. It will be thinner too, measuring 13.7mm folded and 6.5mm unfolded with a weight of 188g. For comparison, the 2024 model measured 14.9mm and 6.9mm and weighed 187g. It's not as dramatic a change as with the Z Fold, but it is appreciated. Even better, the Z Flip7 will have a bigger battery – 4,300mAh, which is 300mAh more than the Z Flip6 and the FE. The FE model is likely to have the same dimensions as the Z Flip6. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 FE The Z Flip7 will be available in Jet Black, Blue Shadow and Coral Red (plus some exclusive colors), while the FE will have a more basic color palette of Black and White. You can see the renders above, which also showcase the difference in cover displays. The two models will also differ in processing power – we think that Samsung will put the brand new Exynos 2500 inside the premium Z Flip7, though a Snapdragon 8 Elite variant may be sold in North America and China. Meanwhile the Z Flip7 FE was benchmarked with the older Exynos 2400. The FE only had 8GB of RAM according to the benchmark results and will be offered with 128GB and 256GB storage. The premium Z Flip7 will have more RAM, 12GB, and storage, 256/512GB. Samsung will introduce the new One UI 8 (based on Android 16) with the new Z foldables. That said, Galaxy S25 units are already doing beta tests. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 carried a price of around €1,400/£1,200 for a 512GB unit, which is €100 more than a 512GB Z Flip6 was last year. As for the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, it will be KRW 1 million in Korea, which will likely translate to $800/€800/£700. Pre-order and release dates Samsung normally puts new models on pre-order right after the Unpacked event ends and waits two weeks before going into open sales. That means the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE will be available for pre-order from July 9 and will be released on July 25 (the release is traditionally on a Friday). Samsung US is already running an early reservation campaign, which can net you a $50 coupon. We expect that the new watches will follow a similar launch schedule. More on the watches below. Galaxy tri-fold Samsung is expected to showcase a tri-fold smartphone at the Unpacked event this Wednesday, which is said to have a 6.49' cover and 9.96' main displays. However, this may have very limited availability – leaks suggest that it will be sold in only two countries, Korea and China, and only in very limited numbers at that. A prototype tri-fold screen from Samsung The tri-fold model appeared in the One UI 8 code, which indicates that it is a real product rather than just a prototype to show off at the event. Still, most people will likely have to wait until next year if they want a Galaxy tri-foldable. And considering the price hike for the Z Fold7, we think it's best if you don't ask how much this one will cost (not that we know). Samsung Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Watch8 Ultra Samsung introduced a 'squircle' design for the original Galaxy Watch Ultra and now the whole Watch8 family is poised to adopt it. Here are renders of the three upcoming models: Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Watch8 Ultra. Samsung Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Watch8 Ultra As you can see from the renders, the Ultra has a rotating bezel (encircling a 1.5' screen) and a crown too. The vanilla Watch8 only has two buttons on the side. The Ultra model also has a crown, but we don't think that its bezel rotates. There will be no new smartwatch chipset this year, all three models are expected to use the Exynos W1000 from last year. The first two should be available in Bluetooth and 4G variants, while the Ultra is likely to forgo the base Bluetooth variant and be available only with 4G. A new OS version is coming to Samsung's wearables too, One UI 8 Watch. It will focus on health with things like bedtime guidance, vascular load and antioxidant features, plus an advanced running coach. One UI 8 Watch features The Galaxy Watch8 will have a slightly bigger battery compared to its predecessor, a minor 10mAh bump on the 44mm variant. The Watch8 and Watch8 Classic will support 10W charging, which is on par with previous models. By the way, someone was selling a Samsung Galaxy Watch8 Classic prototype on eBay. It was a 46mm LTE model with 64GB storage – that's double what the Watch7 and Watch Ultra have. Stay tuned We will have detailed coverage of the Galaxy Unpacked event, so check back with us for all major developments in the Galaxy world.
