Suspect in Saskatoon police pursuit taken to hospital with dog bite injuries, police say

A 32-year-old man was taken into custody and then transported to hospital for treatment of dog bite injuries after a police chase of a stolen vehicle ended in Saskatoon Wednesday morning. The stolen vehicle was reported at 7:53 a.m. CST and the police chase wound through south Saskatoon neighbourhoods, into the downtown and then back to the south side of the city before the man was taken into custody at 8:32 a.m. CST. Dozens of police cars were involved, and multiple civilian and police vehicles were damaged. Some police officers also fired their weapons. In the aftermath, the large truck could be seen lying on its side in the grass beside the off-ramp from Circle Drive onto Valley Road. There was a large hole in the windshield, and more than a dozen police cars and a black armoured vehicle were nearby. Police say the truck was a Ford F-550 owned by a private company that was conducting sewer work at Wiggins Avenue and Cascade Street, in the Adelaide/Churchill neighbourhood. Police say vehicles 'intentionally' damaged In an update Wednesday afternoon, Saskatoon police spokesperson Kelsie Fraser said a man on a bicycle rode up to the truck, got in and drove off. She said police vehicles were damaged in two incidents when the suspect "intentionally struck" them while trying to flee, but no police officers or civilians were injured. "We are thankful that this turned out the way that it did," Fraser said. She said the chase ended when a police vehicle intentionally drove into the truck and immobilized it at the Circle Drive off-ramp. The driver was extricated but "was still not compliant" with officers, she said. He was taken into custody with the help of the canine unit and then transported to hospital for dog bite injuries. Truck 'blew by' witness Eyewitness Luke Ryalls was on his way to work, making a right-hand turn from Isabella Street onto Broadway Avenue, when he first saw the truck. "Suddenly, something blew by me on my right, between me and the curb," he said. "The back of the truck was open and the cable was dangling out of it, and the cable actually banged into my vehicle as it was flying by." Ryalls called 911, then continued to work. He said he saw police cars at Taylor Street and Lorne Avenue setting up what appeared to be a spike belt on the road. Then, after he got to work at his office near downtown, he saw the same truck blow by again, this time with "a lot of cop cars" in hot pursuit. "My other colleague actually was waiting at the intersection at 22nd and Avenue C. She was on her way to work too, and she actually saw it ram a police vehicle at that location," he said. After the pursuit, at least one damaged police vehicle could be seen at the intersection of 22nd Street W. and Avenue C N. More police tape and officers were also at the intersection of 20th Street W. and Avenue C N. Police notified Saskatchewan's Serious Incident Response Team, an independent, civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving officers. However, Fraser said SIRT notified the police that the incident didn't meet their mandate, as no one was seriously injured or killed. Saskatoon police's serious assault unit is now leading the investigation. Charges were still being determined, Fraser said. Police said in a news release that before he stole the truck, the 32-year-old suspect assaulted a taxi driver, stole their vehicle and then struck a convenience store in the 1500 block of 22nd Street, around 6:40 a.m. CST. The man then entered the store, stole some cash, deployed bear spray and fled on foot, according to the release.

Charges dropped again South Hadley driver in connection with deadly hit-and-run crash in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Charges against a man from South Hadley have been dropped in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in Chicopee. The crash happened back in February, when a woman was walking on Abbey Memorial Drive when she was struck and killed. The woman, 34-year-old Vanessa Perez of Springfield, died due to her injuries. Police say two separate cars were involved in the crash that killed her, one plow truck and the other a Sedan. Jerimeldo Lopez of South Hadley, who was driving a plow truck, was charged with two felonies, leaving the scene of personal injury and death, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Woman struck and killed by vehicle in Chicopee identified During the arraignment on April 9th, the defense attorney for Lopez said, 'Through the investigation, it was revealed that earlier on, a little further up the road, Ms. Perez had been struck by a Ford F550 with essentially a 'V' shaped plow. Police were able to learn that through the city surveillance system. There is surveillance video of the vehicle striking Ms. Perez as she crossed Abbey Memorial Drive along Broadway.' He continued, 'This is a case where this incident could only have happened if everything went wrong. He has a green light, it's nighttime, she is wearing dark clothing, and she is in the middle of the road. I don't use that phrase coldly, I mean literally, the middle of the road. She is in the middle of the road, she is listening to music, she has her headphones in, that is why she doesn't hear him. He is listening to music, which he why he doesn't hear anything.' The judge ordered a $10,000 cash bail and ordered to not operate a vehicle. However, Hampden District Attorney's Office Spokesperson Payton North told 22News a decision was made by a grand jury not to indict Lopez. 'We are disappointed by the Grand Jury's decision, but we remain dedicated to seeking justice and will explore all available options to re-present the case moving forward,' said North in a statement. The other driver charged in connection with this case, Lavonta Williams Jr. of Chicopee, who was allegedly the driver of the Sedan, was charged with leaving the scene of personal injury and death. The judge set William's bail at $2,500, which his attorney said he was able to post. 'He tried to do what was right that night, he stopped his car. We had to tell the commonwealth that he called 911, which they verified. He was flagging down people, we think that's why the witness was even able to be there to try to help this person who was lying in the road, which he thought was deceased. There are significant evidential issues that we are dealing with in the case,' said Joseph Pacella, William's attorney. The case against Williams Jr. is still pending. Morgan's Point Resort firefighters upgrade rescue fleet

MORGAN'S POINT RESORT, Texas (FOX 44) – If you happened to drop by the Fellowship Baptist Church in Belton on Tuesday night, you might have noticed the latest addition to Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue's fleet – Rescue Squad 61. Thanks to the community's generosity over the last two years, the Morgan's Point Resort Volunteer Firefighter's Association raised over $84,000 towards the purchase of a Pierce Mini-Pumper from the Jollyville Fire Department. Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue says the Association partnered with the City of Morgan's Point Resort as part of a larger plan to replace the aging fleet, enabling taxpayer dollars to go a little further. Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue says Rescue Squad 61 is built upon a 2018 Ford F550 chassis, and will replace Squad 61 as the department's EMS response vehicle. The current Squad 61 is a 2017 RAM pick-up with a singular EMS mission – as it is not equipped with a fire pump, water tank, or hose. It was placed in-service during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to a sharp rise in EMS call volume. Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue says Squad 61 is the busiest unit in the city, answering on 48 percent of all calls since March 2020. This unit will remain in service as a Battalion Chief car, replacing a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe with nearly 180,000 miles on it. The new apparatus does add to the Squad Program. Though it does not replace a full-size fire engine, it brings 300 gallons of water to the table and a pump capable of flowing 1,500 gallons per minute from a fire hydrant. When added to the Advanced Life Support equipment carried on a squad, the result is a nimble, flexible machine, able to handle virtually any emergency. Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue says presently, if a crew is on an EMS call when a fire drops, they must return to the station and pick-up a truck. Fire doubles in size every minute. Morgan's Point Resort Fire-Rescue says crews started pump training on the new addition Tuesday night. Graphics will be applied over the next two weeks. In addition, there will be a push-in ceremony and dedication at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 21 at the Public Safety Center, located at 6 Lake Forest Drive in Morgan's Point Resort.
