Astonishing moment drunk driver flips his car on its side before driving away - as he is jailed for 14 months
This is the shocking moment a drunk driver flies into the air after trying to cut in between two cars while crossing a 'sleeping policeman' speed bump. Danail Angelov, 20, sent a black Fiat 500 flying when he raced over the speed bump on a quiet residential street in the Blaenymaes area of Swansea, south Wales. Dramatic footage shows the car become airborne on April 22, as he collided with a silver Ford Puma which narrowly missed a pedestrian amidst the carnage. The Puma - with a mother and son onboard - was forced off the road and instead slammed into a garden wall. After ricocheting into a passing white Skoda driven by a taxi driver, the black motor plummeted onto its side before sliding across the road. When the vehicle landed back on its wheels, the 20-year-old drove away from the dramatic scene. Angelov was found by police a short time later in an 'agitated' state in a charity shop where he was being shouted at by members of the public. The 20-year-old who was at the wheel of his uncle's car - which he had taken without consent - was over the drink-drive limit at the time of the crash. A taxi driver, who was travelling in a white Skoda towards the Fiat 500, later attended hospital for the injuries he sustained during the crash. Angelov was jailed to 14 months at Swansea Crown Court after police said it was 'miraculous' that no-one was seriously hurt during the incident. Emily Bennett, prosecuting, told the court that at lunchtime on April 22 this year Angelov was driving a Fiat 500 car on Broughton Avenue, Swansea. She said he overtook the Ford Puma car in front of him just as a white Skoda taxi was coming in the opposite direction. She said Angelov drove between the two vehicle and clipped the Puma and was flipped onto two wheels and into the side of the taxi. Angelov of Swansea pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle-taking, failing to stop after a road accident, drink driving and driving without a license. He was jailed for 14 months at the city's Crown Court. Sgt Robert Richards of South Wales Police lambasted the young man for his 'dangerous actions'. 'Danail Angelov could have injured a number of people with his reckless and dangerous actions,' he said. 'The taxi driver, who was just going about his daily business, had to attend hospital to be inspected for whiplash and concussion. 'There was also a child pedestrian walking on the pavement at the time of the collision, and it is a miracle that one of the three vehicles didn't end up striking them and causing them serious injury. 'The fact that he then drove off from the scene is a sad indictment of his character. 'It is only right that he goes to prison.'

Over half of all UK new car models available in 2025 are SUVs
Analysis from CarGurus — an online automotive retail platform - has found that there are now 193 new SUV models available to motorists from the U.K.'s top 35 manufacturers, compared to just 30 in 2000 (analysis includes SUVs and crossovers). Further research from CarGurus revealed that all 35 of the U.K.'s most popular brands now offer at least one SUV in their range, with 57% offering five or more SUV variants (20 out of 35). Considering the top three brands with the greatest number of SUVs, there are 46 different options (18 from Audi, 15 through BMW, and 13 from Mercedes). In 2000, less than half of the manufacturers examined in the study offered an SUV. The ever-growing popularity of SUVs is reflected in customer demand. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, eight of the ten best-selling cars year-to-date in 2025 are SUVs, with only the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf representing other car categories. Similarly, eight of the top 10 best-selling cars in 2024 were SUVs, with the Ford Puma, Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke, and Tesla Model Y making the top five. The continued rapid rise in this body style has led to an 18% increase in new SUV models in 2025 vs. 2024. Furthermore, of the 193 variations available, 33% are EVs (64). The CarGurus team also found that traditionally popular body styles have experienced a sharp decline in availability across the top 35 manufacturers studied, with 52% of new cars available today being SUVs (52%). In particular, MPVs are down by over 70% since their peak to 22 models (compared to 75 in 2011-2015), and hatchback options have decreased by 46% over the same period, from 100 variations to just 54. Chris Knapman, CarGurus U.K. Editorial Director, said: 'Features like the high driving position, flexible interior space, big boot, and potential off-road capability make SUVs an appealing body style to consumers, so it's no surprise that manufacturers have been racing to meet this demand with an increasingly varied supply of new models. 'Of course, this increase in appetite for SUVs has meant there's been less demand for other types of cars, with the choice of MPVs in particular having dwindled on the new car market. Buyers after one of these less in-demand body styles would do well to look to the used market instead, where there are still plenty of models - SUVs and otherwise - to suit all price points and needs.' SUV offering numbers broken down by brand: "Over half of all UK new car models available in 2025 are SUVs" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand. How much will my car tax increase in 2025?
Large-scale changes to car tax rules have come into force this year because of a £1.7bn raid on motorists. Last year Rachel Reeves announced that Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates would be increasing from April. Electric vehicles (EVs), are no longer be immune from the levy, while bills for petrol and diesel cars have risen by as much as £2,745. Telegraph Money delves into the changes to see how much they will hurt your pockets. If you're buying a brand new car this year, the amount of car tax you pay in the first year will be determined by your vehicle's emissions. The bigger the emissions, the bigger the tax. First-year rates vary from £10 for zero-emission motors, to £5,490 for the biggest polluters, such as the Lamborghini Revuelto. Across the board, petrol, diesel and hybrid drivers now face significant increases resulting from the Chancellor's changes. The first-year rate on cars with tailpipe emissions of up to 50 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, including hybrid vehicles, have risen from £10 to £110. Vehicles with emissions of between 51 and 75 grams per kilometre have also suffered a rate rise, from £30 to £130, and all those with higher emissions have seen their first-year rate double. That means an increase in first-year payments of anything between £135 and £2,745 for the most polluting vehicles. The changes will affect new cars purchased since April. The Government's shake-up essentially means that if you buy a new car with an engine, you'll pay at least £110 in first-year vehicle excise duty. Even the greenest plug-in hybrids face a triple-figure bill, while small family cars with higher emissions have seen their tax charges double. For example, the small Suzuki Swift, with its emissions of 99 grams per kilometre, attracts £330 in tax compared with the previous charge of £165. A doubled first-year tax of £420 payable for the UK's most popular new car, the Ford Puma. Second-hand cars manufactured before April 2025 are not be impacted. So if you buy a used car you won't have to worry about the higher rates. This is because once a car has been on the road for a year, the way it is taxed changes. For cars built from 2017 onwards, this tax is not determined by its CO2 emissions, and all petrol and diesel cars pay a flat rate of £190. Cars built between 2001 and 2017 operate under a different tax system, with vehicles divided into 13 bands depending on their emissions. Annual tax bills range from £0 to £735. Since April, cars in the lowest emissions category, which were tax-free,have moved into the next band and attract a tax of £20. The way in which all other cars built between 2001 and 2007 are taxed has not changed. Those built before 2001, which are divided into two tax categories of under 1549cc and over 1549cc, have also been spared a change to their tax rates. Since April, new EV owners have to pay a £10 charge for the first year of car tax. After that point, they will pay a standard yearly amount – currently £195 – which will increase in line with retail price inflation. Zero-emission cars first registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 also pay the standard rate, so they pay £195 a year. In addition, new EVs will also be liable for the luxury vehicle tax, known as the expensive car supplement, if priced above £40,000. The hefty surcharge, which costs £425 a year, is payable annually between the second and sixth years of a car's lifespan, even if the vehicle's ownership changes hands. Zero-emission motors have been exempt from the levy since 2020, but Tory plans to bring them back into the fold have been implemented by Labour. It means that someone buying a Tesla Model Y, the UK's most popular electric motor, would have to pay £3,085 in combined taxes during the first six years of ownership. Figures from Auto Trader show 67pc of EVs are priced over £40,000 – so thousands of new owners are primed to fall into the tax trap next year. The car tax changes came into effect on April 1 2025. The only vehicles able to escape the charge are classic cars aged over 40 years old, cars which hit the road before 1985 do not attract the tax. Campaigners continue to call for the 40-year-old threshold to be lowered so that cars from the 1990s and 2000s can be brought into the fray, but the cut-off point is highly likely to remain as it is. Vehicles used by disabled people or cars used to transport disabled passengers are also exempt from VED. Revenue-raising and the net-zero drive. First-year tax surges of at least £100 for internal combustion engine-powered cars is an example of the Government's push to incentivise EVs. Budget papers state: 'To help drive the transition to electric vehicles, the Government is strengthening incentives to purchase EVs by widening the differentials in VED rates between EVs and hybrids or internal combustion engine cars.' Critics have labelled the changes 'anti-car' and others have argued it will act as another blow to the dwindling new car market. Sir Keir Starmer wants to phase out the sale of internal combustion engine cars by 2030 and ban hybrids by 2035. With more EVs on the roads, it has long been inevitable that their car tax break would come to an end. The tax changes reflect the Government's need to offset declining fuel duty revenue brought about by increased EV uptake. The Treasury said the overall measures would raise an extra £1.7bn over the next five years. Dangerous driver crashed into two vehicles then flipped his own car
Dangerous driver crashed into two vehicles then flipped his own car Danail Angelov's Fiat 500 skidded down the road on its side after the crash The is the moment a pedestrian narrowly missed being hit by a car that had been forced off the road by a driver carrying out a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. Dangerous driver Danail Angelov crashed into an oncoming taxi and forced another car to veer off the road in a wall - just missing a person walking along the road. Angelov's car slid around the road on its side after the collision before landing back on its wheels. The 20-year-old drove off from the scene but was found by police a short time later in an "agitated" state in a charity shop where he was being shouted at by members of the public. Swansea Crown Court heard that the defendant was at the wheel of his uncle's car - which he had taken without consent - and was over the drink-drive limit when he caused the crash. Emily Bennett, prosecuting, told the court that at lunchtime on April 22 this year Angelov was driving a Fiat 500 car on Broughton Avenue in the Blaenymaes area of Swansea. She said as he approached the bend near the road's junction with Blaneymaes Drive the defendant overtook the Ford Puma car in front of him just as a white Skoda taxi was coming in the opposite direction. Danail Angelov (Image: South Wales Police ) Article continues below She said Angelov drove between the two vehicle and clipped the Puma and was flipped onto two wheels and into the side of the taxi. The Puma - with a mother and son onboard - was forced off the road and slammed into a garden wall, narrowly missing a pedestrian as it did so. Meanwhile the Fiat skidded down the road on its side before landing back on four wheels. The court heard Angelov got out of the Fiat and spoke to people at the scene before getting back into the car and driving away. The court heard the Puma was written off but neither occupant suffered any injury. The taxi - which was carrying a passenger at the time - sustained damage which cost almost £6,500 to put right. The cabbie sustained whiplash and concussion. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter The prosecutor told the court that minutes after the incident police received an emergency call from a charity shop on Ravenhill Road reporting the presence of a male in an agitated and distressed state who was being "shouted at" by members of the public. The defendant was arrested and when searched was found with an empty bottle of Magnum tonic wine. The court heard that a subsequent breath test showed 48mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mg. The court. The defendant answered "no comment" to all questions asked in interview. The dramatic crash was caught on CCTV (Image: CPS Cymru ) Damail Angelov, of Geiriol Road, Townhill, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking ,dangerous driving, drink-driving, failing to stop after an accident, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has two previous convictions for three offences. In June last year he was sentenced to 30 months detention in a young offenders institution for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. That offending involved Angelov acting as part of a gang of teenagers and young adults - one aged just 16 - which was peddling cocaine and heroin to users in Swansea on a drugs line known as the "Candyman" number. The operation was taken down by officers from the city's organised crime team following an operation that included covert surveillance of suspects. He was out of custody on licence at the time of the Blaenymaes crash. Harry Dickens, for Angelov, said the defendant was "deeply sorry" for his action on the day in question and wanted to apologise to all those who had suffered from what he did. He said the day before the collision his client had argued with his mother and then the next day had taken his uncle's car without his knowledge to drive to the shops where he bought alcohol. He said Home Office conditions imposed on his client meant he could not work, enrol in education or claim benefits and he had found himself with little to do and drinking too much alcohol. Judge Catherine Richards said in recent years the defendant had been on "a path of self-destruction". With a one-third discount for his guilty pleas Angelov was sentenced to 14 months in prison. He will serve up to 40 per cent of the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. Article continues below The defendant was disqualified from driving for two years with the ban extended by an extra seven months to cover his period behind bars. He will have to pass an extended test before he can get a licence.
