Coraopolis community holds vigil for man killed in hit-and-run

Members of the Corapolis community gathered on Saturday night to remember Ulises Medina Montalvo, the man who was killed in a hit-and-run last weekend. They came together at the Citgo gas station where the hit-and-run took place. Those in attendance said they remember Montalvo as someone who made his community a better place. "He's done so much for us, even if you were a stranger, helped with yardwork, planting flowers, even businesses, he was doing yardwork, everything," said Julie Populo. "It's just honestly the right thing to do because he's done a lot for us." Police said Montalvo was crossing Fourth Avenue at Main Street when he was hit by an SUV last Sunday night. The driver took off after allegedly hitting Montalvo last Sunday night, but police found the driver. Coraopolis police tell KDKA-TV that they were able to locate the driver at his home in Ambridge through traffic light cameras and license plate readers on Route 65. KDKA-TV learned the driver is an undocumented immigrant and has been detained by ICE. Police have not publicly released the suspect's name. Along with Saturday night's vigil, since Montalvo's death, a memorial has been erected and continues to grow near the scene, thanks to the love and support from the community. "This whole town, it's quiet now," Ben Squair of Coraopolis said. "This town, it feels sort of empty because we lost something." "I appreciate everybody that's coming down and putting stuff out here for him because he was a very special person in this town," Laura Henry of Coraopolis said. Montalvo was known as Tony to many in Coraopolis. People knew the 61-year-old man as a hard worker and a helper.

Man taken into custody following deadly hit-and-run in Coraopolis

A man is in custody in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in Coraopolis. Police say the victim was crossing Fourth Avenue at Main Street when he was struck by an SUV. The driver took off, but police found the driver and what they've learned about him and the man who died. The video shows the victim almost made it to the sidewalk here when an SUV hits him. Flowers now mark the spot where that tragedy happened. Carole Thompkins is the manager at the nearby Sunoco service station on Fourth Avenue. "It's heartbreaking. It really is," she said. When she learned who the victim was in the deadly hit-and-run that happened right in front of her store, she was devastated. While police have not yet publicly released the man's name, Thompkins says the word has quickly spread through the community. She says the man would greet her with a hello every morning as he stood by the front door waiting for his ride to work. When she didn't hear that warm greeting on Monday that she got so used to, it hit home. "He was an amazing person. He was like a big shot in Coraopolis because everybody loved him. There was not one bad word said about him. He was a great person," Thompkins said. Thompkins shared the gas station surveillance video with KDKA-TV. It shows the victim standing at the intersection of Fourth and Main waiting to cross the street. He looks both ways before crossing and almost makes it to the sidewalk when the SUV comes into focus. "It made me sick to my stomach. That was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life," Thompkins said. Coraopolis police tell KDKA-TV that they were able to locate the driver at his home in Ambridge through traffic light cameras and license plate readers on Route 65. KDKA-TV learned the driver is an undocumented immigrant and has been detained by ICE. In the meantime, people who knew the victim are honoring him by placing flowers at the scene. "I put the flowers out because he's done a lot for this community. So as a community, the least we can do is give him something to be remembered by," resident Julie Populo. Everyone who spoke with KDKA-TV had nothing but wonderful things to say about the victim, who was a landscaper. Many said they would see him watering flowers early in the morning for people he didn't even know, or working to create beautiful flower beds at the local PNC Bank. Residents say his legacy will live on. Police tell KDKA-TV that the suspect has not been charged yet as the investigation is ongoing.

Nearly a dozen displaced after fire tears through homes in Ottawa's Glebe neighbourhood

Ottawa firefighters were called to a three-alarm fire that damaged several homes and left nearly a dozen residents displaced in the Glebe neighbourhood Saturday evening. In a news release, the Ottawa Fire Services say multiple 911 callers reported visible smoke and flames impacting a single-family home in the 100 block of Fourth Avenue near Lyon Street at approximately 10:37 p.m. On scene, firefighters found four semi-detached homes, a large tree, a garage with a vehicle and multiple outside decks on fire. Firefighters dispatched additional resources to the scene and began an 'aggressive fire attack.' A second and third alarm was quickly called in due to the scale of the incident. Crews had to deal with several hazards, including live hydro lines. 'Crews worked tirelessly during fire operations, pulling down ceilings, cutting holes in roofs, and opening up walls to ensure all hidden fire was fully extinguished,' the fire service said. (Natalie van Rooy/CTV News Ottawa) Searches of the homes confirmed there were no residents trapped inside. The Ottawa Paramedic Service says it had multiple first responders sent to the area. A woman in her 60s was transported to hospital by ambulance in stable condition, paramedics say. The fire was declared under control at about 11:10 p.m. Victim Services was called in to aid eight adults and two children who will be displaced from the fire. Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick Defazio says crews arrived within two minutes after being dispatched, preventing the flames from spreading further. 'This was a really serious fire that could have spread really quickly throughout that street, but firefighters did an excellent job at containing it.' he said. 'The houses are in close proximity, so when the fire starts spreading, it can jump from one house to another very quickly.' Defazio says the fire appears to have started inside a garage but is still working to confirm the cause. No foul play is suspected, he said. Neighbour describes 'shocking' blaze Lisa Love-Tedjoutomo, who's home suffered minor damage in the fire, recalls seeing the glow of the flames from outside her back window before evacuating. 'I lift the blind, and I see, like it was immediate shock. It was a fire. It was gigantic,' she said. She says neighbours began knocking on doors telling them to get out. She grabbed her dogs and car keys before driving down the road to safety. 'It was just so shocking,' she said. 'I think if the fire department hadn't showed up within minutes, our backyard would have been destroyed. We have a little damage, but we were allowed to go back in our house. But our neighbors weren't so fortunate.' A quick response and a fast attack prevented a rapidly spreading fire from causing even more extensive damage in the Glebe last night. 'They're doing okay,' she said. 'I think it's mostly just processing it. I think that's kind of where we're at – processing it.' With files from CTV News Ottawa's Natalie van Rooy
