Brazil's Paixao promises 'big things' at Marseille unveiling

Brazil striker Igor Paixao was unveiled at Marseille on Monday as he vowed to deliver in Ligue 1 the form and ambition he showed at Feyenoord. The 25-year-old scored 18 goals and provided 19 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions last season, before his 35 million euros ($40 million) switch to Marseille on a five-year deal. After finishing runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain last year, Marseille will play in the Champions League in the upcoming campaign where Paixao can link up with former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood. Paixao said he owed it to Marseille to give everything, and that this matched his ambition to make the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup. "Marseille is a club with values. That's very important for me, for everyone. I want to give my all... It's a major responsibility and I think we're going to do big things," he said. Paixao added he was inspired by former Marseille player Franck Ribery. "With his dribbling, his goals, Ribery was an exceptional player, I will try to be like him, to be able to make history with this club," he said. Paixao earned one Brazil under-23 cap in 2023. we/dmc/nf

Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or rival accused of ‘hate watch fail' during Nations League final as Portugal beat Spain

FRANCK RIBERY felt the wrath of Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo fans at the Nations League final after his recent comments about the Ballon d'Or. The Frenchman hit out at Ronaldo after the 40-year-old had claimed the Ballon d'Or winner should be someone to have won the Champions League. 4 4 4 The Al-Nassr ace said at a press conference on Saturday: "The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. "In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. "But there is no consensus. I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. "Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant." Following those comments, Ribery took to social media and posted a thinly-veiled dig at the Portuguese. He said on an Instagram story: "So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?" He accompanied the message with a trio of laughing emojis. The dig came in reference to the 2013 Ballon d'Or rankings. Ribery ranked third that year behind Ronaldo - who scored 66 goals in 56 games - and Lionel Messi despite winning five trophies, including the Champions League, with Bayern Munich. The 42-year-old called the decision "unfair" in 2022 as he declared he should have won the gong in 2013. However, Ribery's online row spilled over into real life as he was greeted by jeers from trolling Ronaldo and Portugal fans during an appearance at the Uefa Nations League final on Sunday. Ribery was in attendance at the Allianz Arena for the final as Portugal lifted the trophy for a second time by beating Spain on penalties. Ronaldo also scored his nations equaliser to make it 2-2 in regulation time, which had also come after his winner in the semi-finals against Germany. The winning crowd made their feelings towards Ribery known as a video went viral showing the former winger in a heated exchange with some fans. He was eventually forced to retreat inside his hospitality box. Fans also ripped in Ribery online as they accused him of having a "live hate watch fail." One user said: "A failed live hate watch must really hurt lol." A second said: "Failed hate watch x100." Another said: "Ribery failed hate watch." A fourth added: "I know a failed hate watch when I see one."

'So you need to win the Champions League?' - Franck Ribery takes aim at Cristiano Ronaldo, alludes to 2013 Ballon d'Or result

In a press conference ahead of the UEFA Nations League final, Ronaldo expressed his opinion that the individual honour should be handed to a player whose team participated in the UEFA Champions League final. Ronaldo's comments were in response to a question that sought to elicit the veteran's take on who should win the Ballon d'Or between FC Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele. Another frontrunner for the award is Barcelona forward Raphinha, who also leads the tally in goal contributions across Europe's top five leagues. However, Ronaldo's comment was enough to provoke Ribery into a heated reaction, as the Frenchman took to Instagram. "So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?", wrote the 42-year-old on his Instagram story. Franck Ribery's Instagram story following Ronaldo's comments (Image via Instagram/@franckribery7) His reaction alludes to the fact that he missed out on the same award despite being part of a Bayern Munich squad that won the treble. In the title-winning campaign, Ribery led the charge alongside Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic. Ronaldo's five Ballon d'Or wins are second only to rival Lionel Messi, who has lifted 8 till date. After suggesting that Lamine Yamal should not win the Ballon d'Or, Ronaldo will take him on in the final of the UEFA Nations League as Spain face Portugal at the Allianz Arena in Germany.
