(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto's numbers are getting ugly. The slumping New York Mets slugger went hitless again Wednesday and failed to get the ball out of the infield in a 9-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Advertisement After signing a record $765 million contract in December as a free agent, Soto is batting a measly .224 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 55 games during a turbulent first season with the Mets. The four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger winner was 0 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout Wednesday in a dreary performance that matched the weather. He was booed by a sparse crowd at Citi Field, where only a few thousand fans were on hand for a hastily rescheduled game. With rain in the forecast Wednesday night, the first pitch was moved up six hours Tuesday to 1:10 p.m. Soto is 0 for 16 since lacing a two-run double off the right-center fence Saturday in a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. And nothing seems to be going his way: He lost a hit on a chaotic play Tuesday night when he was called out for passing teammate Brandon Nimmo on the basepaths. Advertisement Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed faith in Soto both before and after Wednesday's loss. 'Today was one of those days where he didn't hit the ball hard, but I thought his foundation — his lower half — was in a better position,' Mendoza said. Soto's batting average has dipped 61 points below his career mark entering the season. He hasn't homered since May 9, a span of 75 plate appearances, and he has just seven hits in his last 59 at-bats (.119). With runners in scoring position this year, he's batting .130 (6 for 46) with a homer and 16 RBIs. That after racking up 41 home runs, 109 RBIs and a .989 OPS with the crosstown New York Yankees last season, when he helped them reach the World Series and finished third in AL MVP voting. Advertisement Soto has been particularly cold since May 16, when he got booed incessantly in his return to Yankee Stadium with the Mets. He seemed to take the harsh reception in stride by doffing his helmet to the crowd prior to his first at-bat, but Soto is hitting only .114 (5 for 44) with one extra-base hit since. Most advanced metrics suggest Soto is hitting into hard luck. He ranks among the 90th percentile in several categories at Baseball Savant, though his bat speed ranks in the 73rd percentile, down from the 94th percentile last season. Soto made three outs on balls hit at least 99 mph in Tuesday night's 6-4 win over the White Sox. 'Yesterday was a perfect example of his season so far: 0 for 4 with three balls (almost) 100 mph,' Mendoza said with a chuckle Wednesday morning. 'Hard to explain. But it's baseball. 'Too good of a hitter. Too good of a player. He'll be Juan Soto here.' ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) New York Mets' Juan Soto reacts after the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, May 24, 2025, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) NEW YORK (AP) — After a week of taking hits, Juan Soto came up with a big one. In a slump that sparked debate over whether he made the right decision to leave the Yankees for a record $765 million contract across town, Soto hit a tiebreaking, two-run double with the bases loaded that led the Mets over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 on Saturday night. Advertisement 'I don't listen to any of that. I focus on what we're doing here,' Soto said. Soto had been hitting .119 (5 for 42) with runners in scoring position, 164th among 167 qualified batters, before he drove a 2-2 pitch from Tony Gonsolin high off the right-center field wall for a 4-2 fourth-inning lead. 'I don't think he's swinging great right now and found a way to get a couple knocks tonight,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'You can see him bearing down a little bit more when guys are on base.' Soto's 399-foot drive left his bat at 108.3 mph and missed being a grand slam by about 2 feet. 'When I hit it, I was like, just don't catch it. I wasn't thinking it was going that far,' Soto said. 'When it hit the wall, it actually shocked me. I was like, I didn't know the ball was going that far.' Advertisement He had one hit in his previous 24 at-bats with runners in scoring position and entered 5 for 40 with no extra-base hits and two RBIs in his last 11 games. Soto's lack of hustle on a drive off the Green Monster at Boston's Fenway Park on Monday intensified debate over his slow start and the absence of the Soto Shuffle in the batter's box. A night after the Mets lost the series opener 7-5 in 13 innings, they fell behind 2-0. Brett Baty had a run-scoring single in the second as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night. Luis Torrens singled to open the fourth. Gonsolin loaded the bases with four-pitch walks to Baty and Francisco Lindor, and Starling Marte hit a run-scoring infield single. Advertisement Soto took a close 1-2 slider on the inside corner before the big hit. "I thought I executed the slider really well there. He's got a really good eye, barely missed, but I was pleased with the execution of it," Gonsolin said. "The splitter, I thought it was a solid one, just elevated it." Soto went 2 for 5 against the Dodgers, raising his average from .236 to .241 with eight homers, 23 RBIs and a .792 OPS. 'I don't know what the underlying numbers are saying, but this guy's been very unlucky," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "It was good to see him finally get the results' Advertisement Fans responded to the double with a huge ovation. 'He works his butt off,' Mets starter David Peterson said. 'I think for him to be able to get that today should only give him confidence and I think every guy on this team believes in who he is as a player.' Marte was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on Soto's hit when shortstop Mookie Betts made a quick relay to catcher Dalton Rushing of center fielder Tommy Edman's throw. Peterson matched his career high of 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits while inducing three double-play grounders. He struck out Shohei Ohtani three times. 'I think he made it look human,' Mendoza said. ___ AP MLB:

Pascal Siakam scored a playoff career-high 39 points, and the Pacers beat the New York Knicks 114-109 on Friday night for a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Game 3 is Sunday night in Indiana, which will be rocking all day long with the Indianapolis 500 being run that afternoon. The Pacers can only hope to be as good there as they've been on the road, where they have won six straight games since falling at Milwaukee in Game 3 of the first round. 'We have a long way to go and it's only going to get tougher for us,' Siakam said. Myles Turner added 16 points and Tyrese Haliburton had 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who lost to the Lakers in 2000 in their only NBA Finals appearance. Siakam finished 15 for 23 from the field on a night nobody else on the high-scoring Pacers had more than five baskets. 'Special game,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'In the first half he was the guy that got us going and got us through some difficult stretches.' Jalen Brunson had 36 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, who need a quick turnaround or their first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years will be a brief one. They defended much better after their crushing collapse in a 138-135 overtime loss in Game 1, but couldn't find enough scoring to come back after a bad start to the fourth quarter. Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns each had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Knicks, but Towns played just 28 minutes as coach Tom Thibodeau went longer with backup Mitchell Robinson, a much better defender who grabbed nine rebounds. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. No team has lost the first two games at home and come back to win a series in the conference finals. 'Going into the fourth quarter it's a tie ballgame. We've just got to make better plays, more winning plays,' Thibodeau said. It was tied at 81 after three, before the Pacers opened the fourth with a 13-4 run to move ahead 94-85 on Siakam's 3-pointer with 9:17 remaining. They would quickly push the margin back to around there every time the Knicks got any momentum, and it was 110-100 after another basket by Siakam with 2:45 to play. The Knicks scored nine straight to make it 110-109 on Josh Hart's basket with 14 seconds to go. Aaron Nesmith made two free throws for the Pacers, Brunson was well off on a 3-point attempt and Turner finished it out with two free throws. The 50th playoff meeting between the rivals — the Pacers lead 28-22, all since 1993 — more closely resembled their defensive battles of the 1990s than the shootout of two nights earlier. Indiana raced to a 19-9 lead, but the Knicks quickly caught them when Robinson and Deuce McBride entered and the game remained within a single-digit margin nearly the entire rest of the night.
