NEW YORK (AP) — David Peterson pitched a six-hitter for the first nine-inning complete game of his professional career, and the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight win.
Brandon Nimmo homered twice and Juan Soto went deep against his former team for the second consecutive night. Pete Alonso put the Mets ahead in the first inning with his major league-high 63rd RBI, his 20th in the past 10 games.

NL East-leading New York moved a season-best 20 games over .500 at 44-24.
Peterson (5-2) won his third decision in a row, striking out six and walking none in a game that took just 2 hours, 16 minutes. He threw 106 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.49.
Mets center fielder Tyrone Taylor threw out Luis García Jr. trying to score from second in the eighth on Jacob Young's sharp single.
Peterson's only prior professional complete game was a four-hitter in a rain-shorted, five-inning loss to Atlanta on April 28, 2023. His previous nine-inning complete game came in college, a four-hit shutout for Oregon against Arizona State on April 28, 2017.

New York's previous complete game was a four-hit shutout by Luis Severino against Miami last Aug. 17. Peterson pitched the seventh shutout and 14th complete game in the major leagues this season.
Washington has lost four straight and seven of nine.
Soto, who played for the Nationals from 2018 until he was traded to San Diego in August 2022, followed Francisco Lindor's double off Jake Irvin (5-3) with his 13th homer, a two-run drive on a hanging curve in the third.
Nimmo homered in the fifth off Irvin and in the seventh against Jackson Rutledge for his eighth career multihomer game.
Irvin allowed four runs, five hits and three walks in five innings. He has a 10.29 ERA in the first inning this year and has given up 13 homers in 13 starts.

CHICAGO (AP) — Austin Slater is heading to the New York Yankees. The Yankees acquired the veteran outfielder from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitching prospect Gage Ziehl. The Yankees have a pressing need to bolster their outfield ranks with star Aaron Judge out indefinitely while dealing with a flexor strain in his right elbow. The 32-year-old Slater hit .236 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 51 games with the White Sox this season. The well-traveled Slater can play all three outfield positions. He spent the first seven-plus seasons of his career with San Francisco before being traded to Cincinnati last summer. New York will be Slater's fifth team in just over a year. The Yankees will assume $564,516 of Slater's remaining $1.75 million salary, which also will increase their luxury tax by about $621,000. The trade is the latest in what has been a busy run-up to Thursday's deadline by New York. The Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from Colorado and infielder Amed Rosario from Washington over the last week.

Raiders rookie WR Dont'e Thornton knows he must improve as a route runner
The Las Vegas Raiders entered training camp searching for playmakers at wide receiver. Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker are the two veterans in the room. New general manager John Spytek selected multiple wide receivers during the 2025 NFL draft, landing Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton. Thornton is especially intriguing. The former Tennessee Volunteers standout is an athletic specimen who's still developing the technical aspects of playing the position. The 6-foot-5, 205 pound Thornton ran a blazing-fast 4.30 at the NFL combine. Despite having that size and athleticism, he only produced 661 receiving yards last season. The biggest knock analysts had on Thornton throughout the pre-draft process was his raw route-running ability. He averaged an explosive, FBS-leading 25.4 yards per catch last campaign, but ran a limited route tree, lowering his ceiling. Thornton is aware he must improve as a route runner. "The biggest knock on me was I wasn't a true route runner," Thornton said after a recent practice. "It's more motivation to get even better." New Raiders starting quarterback Geno Smith is a gunslinger. Under Raiders head coach Pete Carroll in Seattle, he loved targeting big-bodied receivers like DK Metcalf down the field. Tucker, Meyers, or Bech can't provide that explosive ability in the way Thornton can if he reaches his performance ceiling. Thornton is taking the correct approach at training camp to develop into a useful target for Smith this season.
