Penguins GM Reportedly 'Asking for a Ton' in Trade Talks for Two Veteran Players
Penguins GM Reportedly 'Asking for a Ton' in Trade Talks for Two Veteran Players originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Penguins are listening to trade offers, but according to the latest reports, the lack of activity has to do with the franchise's unwillingness to give away talent cheaply. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, general manager Kyle Dubas has set a "pretty high" asking price for veterans Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust, both of whom are coming off career-best seasons. In a video shared by B/R Open Ice on X, Seravalli explained Dubas' mindset regarding the trade market. 'What's going on? What's the asking price for Erik Karlsson, Bryan Rust, and Rickard Rakell? The answer is, it's pretty high.' The Penguins are reportedly targeting 'real significant value' for either forward, and Seravalli noted that Pittsburgh is leveraging a market lacking in top-six wingers. 'Rust and Rakell are both coming off of very strong seasons,' Seravalli said. 'Both of them more than lived up to expectations. And Pittsburgh is looking at this market inefficiency and saying, 'No one else can get their hands on these top-six guys, (so) we're not going to give them away.'' According to Seravalli, Dubas has been "asking for a ton" for both Rust and Rakell, and he's still "asking for a lot" for Karlsson, considering the Penguins are expected to do the acquiring team a favor in retaining some of the defenseman's salary. Rakell, 32, tallied 35 goals and 70 points in 81 regular-season games last season, and carries a $5 million salary cap hit. Rust, 33, scored 31 goals and added 34 assists for 65 total points in 71 regular-season games, and carries a $5.125 million cap hit. Both have three years left on their deals, while the Penguins have a huge $13 million in cap space with most of this offseason's free agents already off the board. NHL Analyst Outlines Scenario for Possible Sidney Crosby Trade
NHL Analyst Outlines Scenario for Possible Sidney Crosby Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Amid mounting speculation about a potential Pittsburgh Penguins trade involving captain and franchise icon Sidney Crosby, nothing has materialized yet. And according to the latest reports, it's likely that nothing happens on that front at least through next season. Explaining his view of the situation on his Bleacher Report podcast, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said any possible trade involving Crosby likely won't happen until the 2026 offseason — at the earliest. "I think 'eventually' might be the key word there," Seravalli said. "I could see it. I think it's still a real long shot. Mostly because I think we're taking Sidney Crosby — I think you have to take him at his own word. He wants to be a Pittsburgh Penguin. He wants to finish his career in Pittsburgh." Explaining what it might take to see Crosby leave Pittsburgh, Seravalli pointed to teammate Evgeni Malkin's likely departure once his contract is over next offseason as a potential turning point. That said, Seravalli emphasized that nothing is imminent and that Crosby might still want to remain with the Penguins after Malkin is gone. "I think one thing to keep an eye on here is that Crosby has been really focused on playing out this run with Evgeni Malkin at forward," Seravalli said. "Particularly, those guys have had so much success together, they're so close, that I think with Malkin's deal expiring at the end of this upcoming season, that maybe that presents a window or an opening where he reconsiders or something different happens." Crosby, who will turn 38 next month, continues to perform at an elite level and has two years left on his contract. He recorded 91 points in 80 regular-season games last season, yet the Penguins missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. If Crosby gets traded, according to Seravalli, that won't happen in-season. On top of that, the insider believes this is not the offseason for a Crosby trade. "I also don't see this being an in-season trade," Seravalli said. "So I would think that if it's going to happen, that it would be in an offseason, and definitely not this one." NHL Rumor Roundup: The Latest On Ilya Sorokin, Anthony Cirelli And Mason McTavish
The New York Islanders made a bold move last month by trading defenseman Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens. According to insider Frank Seravalli, they could be considering another major deal. The Hockey News' Stefen Rosner cited Seravalli's recent appearance on the Kevin Kraus Show, during which he indicated he'd heard some trade conversation about Ilya Sorokin. The 29-year-old goaltender is in the second season of an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.25 million. Advertisement Seravalli cited sources saying the Islanders might have sought a draft-day deal that would've sent Sorokin to the Utah Mammoth for the 2025 fourth overall pick. They would've used that pick to select Long Island native James Hagens. However, Rosner cited Islanders GM Mathieu Darche, who said he attempted to move up in the first round, but clubs were unwilling to part with their picks. He's also skeptical that Darche would move his franchise goalie if he wants the Isles to remain competitive and make the playoffs, especially with backup Semyon Varlamov coming off lower-body surgery. It's worth noting that Sorokin cannot be moved without his permission. He has a full no-movement clause through 2027-28. Advertisement One rumor had Tampa Bay Lightning center Anthony Cirelli being in play, but D'Amico swatted that one down. He pointed out that the 27-year-old Cirelli is on a sweetheart contract ($6.25-million cap hit through 2030-31) with a full no-trade clause that kicked in on July 1. Even if Cirelli lacked no-trade protection, D'Amico pointed out the Lightning has no one to replace him. Considering the two-way center was a finalist this past season for the Selke Trophy, it's a safe bet that he's not going anywhere. D'Amico also had bad news for Montreal fans hoping the Canadiens might target Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish with an offer sheet. He cited a league source indicating the 22-year-old McTavish doesn't want to leave Anaheim. They also noted that clubs are reluctant to risk their first-rounders in what is expected to be a deep draft next year. The Ducks aren't concerned about the threat of an offer sheet for McTavish. With nearly $30 million in cap space, they can easily match any offer. Flames GM Addresses Growing Speculation About Rasmus Andersson
Flames GM Addresses Growing Speculation About Rasmus Andersson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Speculation around Rasmus Andersson's future with the Calgary Flames has become one of the most tangled stories of the offseason as the defenseman enters his final season under contract. Advertisement Multiple insiders have reported conflicting details regarding Andresson's impending exit from the Flames, but general manager Craig Conroy has remained firm in saying that the defenseman is happy in Calgary. "Right now, he's totally fine with playing for the Calgary Flames. That was the last conversation. And he's always said that he's a Calgary Flame," Conroy said. "When he comes back in September, he'll say the same thing to you guys, 'I love it here, l'm a Calgary Flame.'" "It's all the speculation. And hey, everybody has a job, everybody has to do it, but until something is done, nothing is done. You have seen guys that maybe you think weren't going to re-sign with their team, and they did re-sign with their team. It happens." Advertisement TSN's Darren Dreger reported on Thursday that the Flames received a significant offer from the Los Angeles Kings that 'would blow your socks off.' Despite the offer, Andersson allegedly declined to waive his no-trade protection. In a previous report, Dreger had linked Ottawa, Columbus, Vegas, and Dallas to ongoing interest in the 27-year-old. He labeled the situation as a "spicy" one. Meanwhile, insider Frank Seravalli reported that Dallas, Vegas, and Los Angeles could pursue Andersson if they manage to move salary. He also called Andersson 'the best trade chip available right now, or before the trade deadline.' Calgary Flames' Rasmus Andersson (4) celebrates a goal with teammate Nazem Kadri (91).Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images TSN's Chris Johnston offered a separate scenario involving a potential swap between Calgary and Buffalo, where the Flames would acquire Bowen Byram if they submit an offer sheet for the blueliner. Advertisement As of now, no deal has materialized, and Andersson remains under contract for next season, the last of his six-year, $27.3 million deal with Calgary. He played 81 regular-season games last year, scoring 31 points, including 11 goals. NHL News: Lightning Lose Goalie To Oilers
The Tampa Bay Lightning are losing one of their depth goaltenders. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers are signing goaltender Matt Tomkins. Tomkins spent this season with the Lightning's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. In 26 games this campaign for the AHL squad, he recorded a 12-10-4 record, a .907 save percentage, and a 2.55 goals-against average. This was after he had a 15-12-2 record, a .904 save percentage, and a 2.53 goals-against average in 29 games in 2023-24 with Syracuse. Advertisement Tomkins also played in three games with the Lightning during the 2023-24 season, where he posted a 3-2-1 record, a 3.33 goals-against average, and a .892 save percentage. He did not make an appearance for the Lightning this past season. Overall, Tomkins has been a solid AHL goalie in the Lightning's system, so the Crunch will certainly miss having him around. Now, he will likely serve in a similar role with the Oilers organization from here.
