Flood alert for 16 districts as Godavari, Krishna in spate

Vijayawada: Even as depression formed in Bay of Bengal weakened and moved towards the Odisha coast, flood water levels steadily increased in Krishna and Godavari rivers on Tuesday due to heavy rains in upland areas for the last two days, prompting flood alerts for 16 districts along the rivers in the state. In the wake of rising water levels in the rivers, Special Chief Secretary of Disaster Management G Jayalakshmi held a teleconference with the district collectors of the affected regions, urging them to take immediate precautionary measures. Speaking from the State Emergency Operations Center, Jayalakshmi directed officials to continuously monitor low-lying and flood-prone areas. She instructed them to issue timely alerts and, if necessary, to evacuate residents to relief and rehabilitation centers. Officials were also told to keep essential supplies, medicines, and sanitation materials ready. To support emergency and relief operations, the government has sanctioned Rs 16 crore, allocating Rs 1 crore to each of the 16 flood-affected districts. This funding will be used to set up relief camps and distribute safe drinking water, food, milk, and medicine. Jayalakshmi confirmed that State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed and are on standby in several areas, including Avanigadda, Krishna Ghat, Vijayawada, Chintur, and Amalapuram, to respond to any emergency. As of 6:00 PM on Tuesday, the Godavari River water level at Bhadrachalam reached 36.6ft, with inflows and outflows at the Dowleswaram Barrage at 7.4 lakh cusecs. On the Krishna River, inflows and outflows at the Prakasam Barrage were 4.66 lakh cusecs and are expected to rise further. The first warning has been issued at Prakasam Barrage, officials said The weather forecast for Wednesday indicates light to moderate rains in North Coastal districts. The public has been advised to avoid traveling on boats, to refrain from swimming or fishing in floodwaters, and not to attempt to cross overflowing streams or canals until the water levels completely subside. Meanwhile, the depression formed over south interior Odisha moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 28 kmph on Tuesday and lay centred about 20 km northeast of Bhawanipatna (Odisha), 30 km south of Titlagarh (Odisha) and 120 km southeast of Nuapada (Odisha). It is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across south interior Odisha and south Chhattisgarh and weaken into a well- marked low-pressure area by Tuesday night, announced the Indian Meteorological Department. The depression resulted in normal to heavy rains in some parts of AP particularly in North Coastal Andhra for two days on Sunday and Monday.

Vijayawada, Aug 19 (UNI) Incessant rain and floods have wreaked havoc in Coastal Andhra districts and crops in about two lakh acres marooned in the flood water. According to official sources, incessant rains and foods affected 106 mandals in 14 districts. Over 900 villages across the state were affected by the floods. ASR, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts were battered by heavy floods and rain throwing normal life out of gear. Road connectivity to over 200 villages was cut off due to overflowing of flood water on the roads. As a preliminary assessment, crops were damaged in over 1.85 lakh acres in these districts. The paddy crop in over 1.60 lakh acres was marooned in the flood water and cotton crop in over 20,000 acres. The crop loss was expected to be high in combined Guntur, West Godavari and Krishna districts, official sources added. All the major rivers including the Krishna, Godavari, Shabari, Vashista, Vainateya and Gowthami are in spate with heavy inflows. Over 20 island villages in Konaseema district including Burugulanka, Arigelavaripet, Udumudilanka, G Pedapudilanka, Ayodyalanka, Marrilanka and Anagarilanka were surrounded by flood water and the villagers were using boats to come out the villages. The vehicular traffic was suspended on Tacheru bridge as flood water overflowed on the bridge resulting in the road connectivity between Vaddadi-Chodavaram was disrupted. A control room was set up in the Collector's office in Srikakulam to receive and provide information to the affected people. Collector Swipnal Pudkar warned the fishermen not to venture into the sea for fishing. Special Chief Secretary of Disaster Management G Jayalakshmi directed the district Collectors of the affected districts to be on high alert. She held a video conference with the Collectors of 13 districts on Tuesday. She directed them to take all required steps to ensure that no untoward incident took place. The Special CS told them to take steps to evacuate people living in the low-lying areas to the relief camps, if needed. She also directed the NDRF and SDRF teams to be ready to swing into action if required. AP Disaster Management MD Prakhar Jail said that the depression crossed over South Odisha coast at Gopalpur. In Konaseema district, RDO Madhavi visited some of the flood hit areas in Mummidivaram mandal and reviewed the situation. The Srisailam dam across the river Krishna is receiving heavy inflow of 3.42 lakh cusecs and 4.04 lakh cusecs is being released to the downstream NSP project. The NS project was receiving 3.71 lakh cusecs of water and 3.98 lakh cusecs was being released to the downstream Prakasam barrage. The inflow at Prakasam barrage here was 4.01 lakh cusecs and the same was being discharged into the sea by lifting all the 70 crest gates. The river Godavari is also in spate with 8.23 lakh cusecs of inflow at the Dowleswaram projects at Rajahmundry and the same was being released into the sea. All the rivulets, streams, irrigation canals and nalas are overflowing in the coastal Andhra districts. VIJAYAWADA: Chief Secretary K Vijayanand instructed officials to ensure comprehensive preparedness for the southwest monsoon season, emphasising proactive measures to mitigate disasters like cyclones and floods. During a video conference held at the State Secretariat on Thursday, he engaged with various State departments, alongside representatives from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), and other Central government bodies, to review monsoon readiness. He stressed the need for advanced action plans to address potential heavy rains or cyclones. He urged the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and other departments to anticipate risks such as overflowing rivers, streams, and canals, and to collaborate with Vassar Labs for effective planning. He directed the SDMA and Real-Time Governance Society (RTGS) to coordinate with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for enhanced disaster management. He emphasised minimising loss of life and property during calamities, calling for the timely restoration of normalcy through department-specific action plans. The Water Resources Department was instructed to strengthen flood embankments, stockpile sandbags, and intensify floodplain patrolling. The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department was tasked with keeping JCBs, cranes, and power shovels ready to clear fallen trees and restore traffic on major roads. The Panchayat Raj & Rural Development (PR&RD) Department was directed to ensure standby generators for water supply schemes and leak-free pipelines, while the Municipal Administration Department was asked to complete desilting of urban drains and canals. The Energy Department was told to stock standby generators, tree cutters, and electricity poles, and the Medical and Health Department was to ensure adequate medicine supplies and raise public awareness about preventing infectious diseases in flood-prone areas. The Civil Supplies Department was instructed to maintain sufficient stocks of essential commodities at MLS points. He directed Revenue Principal Secretary G Jayalakshmi to circulate GO No. 1 and GO No. 13, which outline increased compensation for disaster victims, to all departments. He recommended biweekly departmental reviews to ensure effective disaster preparedness.

Vijayawada: Public participation is very vital for the success of Swarnandhra – Swachh Andhra initiative being implemented by the State government, said G Jayalakshmi, Special officer, NTR district and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA). She was the chief guest at Swarnandhra programme organised at VMC circle-2 office in Satyanarayanapuram on Saturday. The civic body conducted the program with the theme 'Beat the Heat'. She inspected the stalls arranged by VMC at the circle officer and planted the saplings. Later addressing the meeting, special officer Jayalakshmi said the objectives set by the government can be reached with the participation of the people. She said we can beat the heat by growing trees and plants. She said growing trees is the only solution to get protection from heat. She said the scope for growing of trees is limited in urban areas due to concrete structures. She suggested the plants and trees can be grown in both public and private places. Jayalakshmi said the district administration is taking steps to implement the plastic ban successfully. VMC commissioner HM Dhyana Chandra said the VMC is conducting Swarna Andhra and Swatchandhra programme on every third Saturday and this month the programme is organized with the slogan Beat the Heat. He called upon the people to grow trees and suggested the people to take steps for the terrace gardening. Vijayawada central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao stressed the need to grow trees and avoid the use of single used plastic. He said single used plastic is very harmful to the mankind. He suggested the people to be cautious in the summer. NTR district Revenue Divisional officer K Chaitanya, additional commissioner projects Dr D Chandra Sekhar, chief Engineer, VMC R Srinath Reddy and other officials and staff attended the programme.
