Flood alert for 16 districts as Godavari, Krishna in spate
In the wake of rising water levels in the rivers, Special Chief Secretary of Disaster Management G Jayalakshmi held a teleconference with the district collectors of the affected regions, urging them to take immediate precautionary measures.
Speaking from the State Emergency Operations Center, Jayalakshmi directed officials to continuously monitor low-lying and flood-prone areas. She instructed them to issue timely alerts and, if necessary, to evacuate residents to relief and rehabilitation centers. Officials were also told to keep essential supplies, medicines, and sanitation materials ready.
To support emergency and relief operations, the government has sanctioned Rs 16 crore, allocating Rs 1 crore to each of the 16 flood-affected districts. This funding will be used to set up relief camps and distribute safe drinking water, food, milk, and medicine.
Jayalakshmi confirmed that State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed and are on standby in several areas, including Avanigadda, Krishna Ghat, Vijayawada, Chintur, and Amalapuram, to respond to any emergency.
As of 6:00 PM on Tuesday, the Godavari River water level at Bhadrachalam reached 36.6ft, with inflows and outflows at the Dowleswaram Barrage at 7.4 lakh cusecs. On the Krishna River, inflows and outflows at the Prakasam Barrage were 4.66 lakh cusecs and are expected to rise further. The first warning has been issued at Prakasam Barrage, officials said
The weather forecast for Wednesday indicates light to moderate rains in North Coastal districts. The public has been advised to avoid traveling on boats, to refrain from swimming or fishing in floodwaters, and not to attempt to cross overflowing streams or canals until the water levels completely subside.
Meanwhile, the depression formed over south interior Odisha moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 28 kmph on Tuesday and lay centred about 20 km northeast of Bhawanipatna (Odisha), 30 km south of Titlagarh (Odisha) and 120 km southeast of Nuapada (Odisha).
It is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across south interior Odisha and south Chhattisgarh and weaken into a well- marked low-pressure area by Tuesday night, announced the Indian Meteorological Department. The depression resulted in normal to heavy rains in some parts of AP particularly in North Coastal Andhra for two days on Sunday and Monday.

School Principal Swept Away In Bhamragarh Nullah, Body Found
1 2 Nagpur: In a heartbreaking incident, a headmaster with zilla parishad primary school in Gadchiroli, Asantu Soma Talandi, 40, was swept away by floodwaters in Seepanpalli nullah, Bhamragarh taluka, on August 18. His body was recovered the next day after a two-day search involving local villagers, Talathi, and Kotwal. Talandi, a resident of Jonawahi, was travelling from Palle (Aheri) when torrential rains caused a sudden surge in Seepanpalli nullah's water levels. Tehsildar Kishore Bagde said Talandi attempted to cross a submerged bridge, when tragedy struck. This marks the second flood-related death in Bhamragarh in 24 hours, following the death of 19-year-old Lalchand Lakda in Kodpe village, who was swept away in Khandi nullah. The region is grappling with severe flooding, with 12 major roads, including Hemalkasa-Bhamragarh National Highway-130D and Sironcha-Asaralli-Jagdalpur NH-63, closed due to overflowing nullahs. Scores of villages in Bhamragarh, Aheri, Chamorshi, Mulchera, Kurkheda, and Desaiganj talukas are marooned and have lost connectivity with taluka and district headquarters. Supply of vegetables & milk hit by road closures; several villages cut off in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: Continuous rainfall over the past few days has severely affected road connectivity in parts of the state. In Kolhapur district, eight state highways, 34 major district roads and 14 other district roads were inundated on Wednesday. Moreover, 79 barrages were also submerged, disconnecting several villages. On Wednesday morning, the road leading to Radhanagari from Kolhapur was closed for vehicular traffic after the Bhogawati River water flooded the highway at Haladi Village. Meanwhile, the floodwaters of the Panchaganga River breached the Kolhapur-Ratnagiri National Highway at Kerli village, prompting traffic diversion via Kerli-Jyotiba-Danewadi-Waghbil towards Ratnagiri. Additionally, floodwaters of the Panchaganga encroached on the road between Kolhapur city and Shiye village, leading towards the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway on Wednesday evening. Traffic movement persisted through the flooded stretch. The police may shut the road by late Wednesday night. In Kolhapur city, the road between Gangawesh and Shivaji Bridge was shut after the Panchaganga water entered the road. Floodwaters also reached the Sutarwada area. With the Kolhapur-Gaganbawda and Kolhapur-Anuskura roads already closed, a large number of villages have been cut off. The supply of vegetables in the APMC market was largely affected, resulting in a price hike of Rs 40-Rs 50 per kg of vegetables on Wednesday. The road closures also impacted daily milk collection to dairies. Sachin Patil, the public relations officer with Gokul Dairy, said, "Around 10,000 litres of daily milk collection was affected. If the rain intensity continues for two to three more days, then the situation will become further critical." Sadik Bagwan, a vegetable vendor from Shahupuri vegetable market, stated, "Although the supply isn't totally off, it was largely affected due to incessant rain followed by road closures. Vegetable produce was damaged due to incessant rains, and due to road closures, the supply was also hit, resulting in a hike of Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg."
