Cashless transactions in LRT, MRT to start in July —DOTr
Passengers can use debit cards, credit cards, and e-wallets to pay the fare in Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) starting July, eliminating long lines at train stations, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. Instead of buying and reloading Beep cards or stored-value smart cards used in LRT and MRT, passengers can simply tap their phones or cards at the turnstile upon their entry to the railway platform. DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said the department will start deploying cashless turnstiles for the automatic fare collection (AFC) system next month. 'Mga bandang July ito, if I'm not mistaken. I-implement na natin sa MRT at sa ibang mga tren natin. Alam ko pati credit card puwede na. Ita-tap mo na lang 'yung phone mo. Hindi ka na kailangan bumili ng Beep,' he said. (This will be around July, if I'm not mistaken. We will implement it on the MRT and on our other trains. I know that credit cards can also be used. Just tap your phone. You don't need to buy a Beep card.) 'Nagtaka nga ako bakit hindi ito kaagad na-implement, 'yun naman pala kaya i-implement kaagad-agad itong cashless options sa MRT,' he added. (I was wondering why it wasn't implemented right away, the cashless options on the MRT can be implemented right away actually.) President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. earlier ordered the DOTr to develop an open-loop payment system that is integrated with multiple financial platforms, Dizon said. According to a report of EJ Gomez on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita on Tuesday, some passengers said the cashless transaction in LRT and MRT is good news for them. The passengers said the move will eradicate long lines, hassles, and health risks. —Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News

Broadcast giant GMA Network reaffirmed its global excellence in producing world-class content that resonates with international audiences, bringing home 3 World Medals for the Philippines at the 2025 New York Festivals TV & Film (NYF) Awards–including another prestigious Gold medal for 'The Atom Araullo Specials (TAAS).' For the third consecutive year, The Atom Araullo Specials earned the World Gold Medal, this time in the Documentary: National Affairs category for its powerful episode 'Pogoland.' Aired in 2024, the documentary hosted by Atom Araullo delved into the vast, deep, and intricate world of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), offering viewers a deep and nuanced look into this controversial industry. The Atom Araullo Specials also won back-to-back Gold Medals in the Documentary: Social Issues category for 'Batas Bata' (Child's Game) in 2024 and 'Mata sa Dilim' (Eye in the Dark) in 2023. Aside from Gold, the Silver and Bronze medals were also won by GMA Public Affairs. Earning a Silver medal was the multi-awarded and highly-acclaimed film 'Firefly,' which won in the Films: Feature Films category. Produced by GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs, Firefly previously emerged as the runaway winner at the inaugural Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) in Hollywood, California, taking home the highly coveted Best Picture honor. Shown in 2024, the film also dominated the 49th Metro Manila Film Festival. The Philippines' most awarded news magazine program 'Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS)' added another laurel to its growing list of international accolades, taking home the Bronze medal for its episode 'Minahan sa Homonhon Island' (Nickel and Dime: The Cost of Mining in Homonhon Island) in the Documentary: Environment & Ecology category. The episode featured the devastating effects of large-scale mining in Homonhon Island in Guian, Eastern Samar, which sparked discussions online as host Jessica Soho went to Guiuan to personally investigate the issue. Equally giving the country prestige are '24 Oras' and "Lost Sabungeros," which earned Finalist certificates in their respective categories. GMA Integrated News' flagship newscast "24 Oras" was conferred with a Finalist Certificate for its special coverage titled 'Super Typhoon Carina (Typhoon Gaemi) and Habagat (Southwest Monsoon).' The recognition celebrates 24 Oras' exceptional journalism and public service as it delivered timely, accurate, and life-saving information to millions of Filipinos during one of the most destructive weather events in 2024. GMA Integrated News mobilized its reporters on the ground, integrated real-time data, and provided vital updates through multiplatform coverage. The program served as a critical lifeline for communities in distress, highlighted GMA Integrated News' continued excellence in disaster reporting to keep the public informed and safe, and its standing as the most trusted news organization in the Philippines. Completing the recognitions for GMA Network was "Lost Sabungeros," which secured a Finalist certificate in the Documentary: Investigative Journalism category. Directed by Bryan Brazil, the GMA Public Affairs' first-ever investigative documentary tried to shed light on the disappearances of over 30 sabungeros (cockfighters) who have been abducted in various incidents since 2022. Celebrating the world's best since 1957, the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards honors creative excellence and mastery of craft in all lengths and forms. This year's roster of shortlists included a diverse range of engaging primetime entertainment, documentaries, investigative journalism, sports coverage, promos, streaming media, and brand image films. GMA Network has consistently led the Philippines' presence at the New York Festivals, garnering the most nominations and awards for the country year after year. Manila mayor-elect Isko Moreno vows to address security, garbage woes
Manila mayor-elect Isko Moreno on Wednesday said he would prioritize addressing garbage problems and security concerns once he reassumes his former office in city hall. In a one-on-one interview with Arnold Clavio on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita, Moreno said, "'Yung dalawang pangunahing hinihingi niyo sa akin, yung kalinisan, kaayusan, at kapanatagan ng pamumuhay sa Maynila, 'yun po una kong tutugunan." (I will address cleanliness and orderliness, and secure living in Manila. These are the two primary concerns that the people want me to focus on.) Moreno said he has been receiving a lot of complaints from constituents about garbage in the city. He said this became one of his campaign promises. "Ang basura, o sanidad for that matter, is an issue of all. Hindi 'yan issue ng mahirap, hindi 'yan issue ng middle class, hindi 'yan issue ng mayaman. Lahat ng tao, dahil walang pinipili ang sakit dulot ng tambak ng basura pagdating sa kapakanan ng taumbayan," he said. (Garbage, or sanitation for that matter, is an issue for all. It's not an issue of the poor, it's not an issue of the middle class, it's not an issue of the rich alone. It's everyone's concern because the diseases brought about by garbage do not choose their victims.) As for security, Moreno lamented that Manila is among the cities with the highest crime indexes in Southeast Asia. Citing incidents of holdup and snatching, Moreno said crimes happen even during "Broad daylight and so on and so forth. And one of the reasons bakit dumadaming ganyan kasi maraming gumagamit ngayon [ng droga]." (Broad daylight and so on and so forth. And one of the reasons why there are so many crimes is because the number of illegal drug users is rising.) "'Yung bisyo, kailangan tugunan nila. Kaya sabi ko, mga tolongges, palit na kayo ng address or magbago na kayo," he added. (They need to do something about vices. That's why I say to you troublemakers: Change your address or change your ways.) Meanwhile, Moreno vowed that he would complete his three terms as Manila mayor, dismissing the possibility that he would run again for president in the 2028 elections like he did in the 2022 polls. "I already committed to the people of Manila. We're gonna create a 10-year plan," Moreno said. "Actually, hindi naman masama tumakbo ng presidente. Sa mga manonood ngayon, may mga anak sila. Malamang nangangarap din silang maging presidente at makapaglingkod. It's just that it's destiny. The people have chosen already President Bongbong Marcos and we move on with our lives," he added. (Actually, it's not bad to run for president. To our viewers, they have children. They probably also dream of becoming president and serving the people. It's just that it's destiny. The people have already chosen President Bongbong Marcos and we move on with our lives.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News
