Marcos defends Remulla's 'announcements'

GMA Network6 days ago
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. defended DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla following criticisms related to his department's style of announcing class and work suspensions.
When asked about this, Marcos told reporters covering his trip in Washington, DC, that he is "not a judge of literary style."
'As long as he gets the message across, that's what it's for. That's what all of these postings are for and get some information across," Marcos said.
''People criticize me for the way I speak, criticize him for the way he speaks. But that's the way he speaks,' he added.
The President also explained that the task of announcing class suspension was given to Remulla to avoid the spread of fake information.
"Which website do you consult? So, pagka ganito, basta't sinabi na, the SILG will make the announcement… Wala ng fake news. Iyon na 'yung katotohanan. Iyon na 'yung totoo,' explained Marcos.
'So that the dissemination of information is better. That is very simple."
Apology
Remulla has already apologized for the "humorous posts" of his department for the announcement of class and work suspensions with some netizens saying that they were insensitive.
Remulla told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview that he was not downplaying the struggle of the public and that he was just trying to lighten their mood.
In a post on DILG's Facebook account on Tuesday, Remulla said, "Mga abangers, may inaabangan ba kayo? Mamaya na kain muna ko."
(Guys, are you waiting for something? Later, I have to eat first.)
Then, the DILG again published a post with Remulla saying, 'Mga abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay nakaidlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan niyo!'
(Guys, I had a delicious meal. I fell asleep for a while after being full. Oh, this is what you've been waiting for!)

SOJ Remulla: There is a new witness in missing sabungeros case

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said Tuesday authorities will soon present a new witness in the case of the missing sabungeros that will bolster the credibility of whistleblower Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan alias Totoy. 'Napakahagala. It bolsters the credibility of Totoy,' Remulla said in an ambush interview. ((It's) Very important. It bolsters the credibility of Totoy.) 'Hindi lang ito testimonial evidence. May real evidence na involved dito. Meron dito totoong ebidensya na bukod sa kwento,' he later added. (This is not just testimonial evidence. There is real evidence involved here. There is actual proof aside from the story.) Patidongan, one of the accused in the case, previously told authorities that more than 100 sabungeros were abducted, killed, and then dumped at Taal Lake. According to Remulla, the new witness is a civilian whose name has yet to appear in media reports. Police officer relieved from post Meanwhile, Remulla also met with PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III at the Department of Justice main building. He said he extended his gratitude to Torre for agreeing to his request to relieve a service commander from the case. 'Nakiusap ako kay General Torre na i-relieve yung isang service commander at nangyari naman. Kaya ngayon malinaw na naman ang aming landas patungo sa paglutas ng problemang ito,' he said. (I asked General Torre to relieve a service commander and it happened. So now our path toward resolving this problem is once again clear.) The Justice secretary clarified that the service commander was not removed for supposed involvement in the disappearance of the sabungeros, but due to a lack of trust. 'Meron siyang kinilos na hindi ko gusto,' he said. (He did something that I didn't like,) 'Alam ninyo napakahalaga ng gantong tiwala sa prosesong ito. Tiwala ang pinakamahalagang ano dito, magkaroon. Kasi kapag wala kang tiwala, paano magsasalita ang mga tao. Hindi buo ang tiwala. 'Yun lang ang aking sinigurado,' he added. (You know, trust is very important in this process. Trust is the most important thing here, to have. Because if you don't have trust, how will people speak? The trust isn't whole. That's the only thing I made sure of.) He said the service commander is also not among the 12 cops who are accused of being involved in the case. The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) has found probable cause to file an administrative case against these cops. Remulla said he will compare notes with NAPOLCOM vice chairperson and executive officer Atty. Rafael Calinisan regarding the direction of the investigation. Aside from this, he said he will also talk to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. this week regarding the case. In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025), Marcos said the entire government is doing everything to solve the case of missing sabungeros, noting that even those with influence, who are allegedly involved in the crime, will never be above the law. Meanwhile, Remulla said that the search and retrieval operation at the Taal Lake has also resumed after it was temporarily suspended due to inclement weather. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

DA expanding P20 per kilo rice program to cover middle class

The coverage of the Marcos administration's P20 per kilo rice initiative—currently accessible to members of vulnerable sectors—will include middle-class families by 2026, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Tuesday. The P20 per kilo rice is currently being sold at KADIWA ng Pangulo outlets across the country, but only members of vulnerable sectors—including indigents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents—are eligible to buy the subsidized National Food Authority (NFA) rice. The rice is sourced from the stocks of the NFA, which are procured directly from local farmers. The government subsidizes the program through the Food Terminal Inc. 'Our plan is… we will sell the P20 [per kilo] rice to 15 million households… or about 60 million Filipinos. These are middle-income families and below,' Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said at the Post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) forum in San Juan City. The DA will set a monthly cap of 10 kilos that middle-class households can purchase. 'This can be increased further as we go along,' Tiu Laurel said. Vulnerable sectors have a higher limit of 30 kilos a month. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in his fourth SONA, said that the P20 rice program is expanding nationwide, adding that his campaign promise has already been achieved. The Agriculture chief said the DA is setting aside P18 billion next year for the P20 per kilo rice initiative. 'But in the future, the way to make it sustainable is we plan to buy rice from the farmers with the additional funds,' he said. He added that the DA is eyeing selling 80% of rice procured from local farmers in the retail market. The DA chief said the agency is pushing for the amendment of the Rice Tariffication Law to bring back the powers and market intervention functions of the NFA ''so we can buy rice as we sell rice; unlike now, it's just for buffer stocking.' —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Thousands of teachers to be promoted under new career progression plan —DepEd

Thousands of public school teachers are set to receive long-awaited promotions this year under the Department of Education's (DepEd) expanded career progression system. According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the move is part of sweeping reforms to recognize the vital role of educators and ease long-standing burdens that have affected their morale and productivity. 'We began by operationalizing the expanded career progression system, and there are thousands who will be promoted this year,' Angara said at the launch of the QBEDP 2025–2035 on Tuesday. The initiative is accompanied by several teacher-focused measures, including the doubling of the teaching supplies allowance, an increase in salary subsidies even for private school teachers, and the creation of 20,000 new teaching positions. To reduce non-teaching workload, DepEd also hired 10,000 administrative officers. 'We provide them relief, we lighten the load, led by our beloved President (Marcos),' Angara said. The career progression system introduces more flexible promotion tracks, allowing teachers to move up in rank based on classroom performance and subject expertise —not just through supervisory roles. During his speech, Angara also lauded Marcos for highlighting teachers' welfare during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, where the President vowed to institutionalize reforms such as compensation for overtime work and teaching overload, alongside nationwide digitalization efforts in education. 'The President emphasized not only our duty to educate but also our duty to care for those who educate,' Angara said. For years, teachers' groups have raised concerns over unpaid overtime and the mounting volume of paperwork that detracts from instructional time. Responding to these concerns, Marcos said his administration had already removed nearly 100 non-teaching requirements previously imposed on teachers, with the remaining documentation soon to be automated. DepEd's new career system and support measures form part of the larger QBEDP 2025–2035, a ten-year roadmap designed to overhaul basic education in the Philippines and ensure that no teacher is overburdened and no learner is left behind. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
