Customer finds dead honeybee in pizza, eatery fined 1L by consumer panel
Mohali: In a striking case of food safety negligence, the district (Mohali) consumer disputes redressal commission has imposed a fine of Rs 1,00,000 on Domino's Pizza after a dead honeybee was allegedly found in a pizza purchased by two customers. The commission partly allowed the complaint, awarding the compensation for harassment, mental agony, and litigation expenses. The complainants, Gurpyar Singh, an advocate from Dhuri, and Surinder Kumar from Dhanas, Chandigarh, stated that they fell ill after consuming the contaminated pizza and had to be hospitalised at Govt Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, with symptoms of nausea and vomiting. They further alleged that when they brought the issue to the notice of the outlet manager, he not only tried to dismiss the complaint but also misbehaved with them. Whereas, Domino's, operated by Jubilant FoodWorks at Sector 125, New Sunny Enclave, Kharar, through its Manager Ronny, denied the allegations. In its defence, the company highlighted its stringent hygiene practices including insect killer machines, regular pest control, and oven temperatures of 515°F for over five minutes. They argued that the dead insect—whose wings and legs appeared intact in the complainants' photo — could not have survived the cooking process, implying possible tampering post-delivery. This fact clearly shows that the present complaint is a result of afterthought and that the dead fly was never there when the pizza was delivered to the complainant. However, the commission bench comprising president SK Aggarwal and member Paramjeet Kaur held the food chain accountable, stating, "Keeping in view the entire facts and peculiar circumstances of this case and the fact that the dead honeybee was found in the pizza purchased by the complainants from the company, the complaint is partly allowed with the directions to the company to pay compensation to the tune of Rs 1,00,000 to the complainants for harassment, mental agony, as well as litigation expenses. Evening OPDs at dispensaries on hold amid Chandigarh admn's silence on budget
The UT health department's plan to start evening outpatient departments (OPDs) at all its civil dispensaries and health and wellness centres across the city remains in limbo in the absence of budget approval by the UT administration. In February, director of health services Dr Suman Singh had confirmed that a ₹13-crore proposal to run the evening OPDs had been sent to the UT administration for budget sanction. However, more than three months have passed and the administration is yet to take a call on the matter. Health secretary Ajay Chagti said, 'The proposal has been submitted to the finance department. We will start the OPDs when it is approved.' Finance secretary Diprava Lakra said he was not aware of any such proposal and refused to comment further. The proposed evening OPDs will operate for six hours, complementing the existing morning shift (8 am to 2 pm) at health and wellness centres. The extended hours will cover three civil dispensaries, 15 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and 29 health and wellness centres with the aim of providing relief to city residents, daily wagers and those belonging to the working class as they find it difficult to visit doctors during their daytime working hours, especially those living in Dadumajra, Mauli Jagran, Dhanas, Maloya, Manimajra and Industrial Area Phase 1. The services to be offered include general outpatient care for illnesses and minor ailments; primary healthcare, including prenatal and childbirth care, and management of communicable diseases. This expansion follows a previous, limited evening OPD trial at Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, in 2015, which addressed faculty shortages by hiring retired specialists, including orthopaedics, gynaecologists and surgeons, etc. However, this time, the focus is on hiring young MBBS doctors on a consolidated salary basis to staff the evening shifts. The proposal of starting evening OPDs has been making rounds since 2023. Initially, it had targeted five key locations with a high concentration of daily wage earners, aiming to provide accessible healthcare without requiring them to sacrifice their daily income. An estimated budget was prepared for the five locations but was later extended to all the dispensaries.

A 23-year-old man was attacked by a pet German Shephard outside House Number 230 in Sector 21-A on Thursday evening. The victim, Kartik Gandhi, a resident of Dera Bassi, sustained multiple injuries after being bitten several times by the dog, allegedly unleashed by its owner. According to the complaint filed by Gandhi at the Sector-19 police station, he had parked his car near the residence of the dog owner while visiting his office in the vicinity. Chandigarh: Lawyer, 2 friends attacked in brawl over tea order near Sector-17 ISBT
In a bizarre brawl, an advocate and his two friends were assaulted by five assailants near the Sector-17 ISBT on early Friday morning over a misunderstanding about a tea order, leaving one with broken teeth. Complainant Thakur Abhay Singh Chima, 24, a practising advocate at the District Courts Complex, Sector 43, told police that he had gone to visit his friends Kartik Chauhan and Ashutosh Sharma in Sector 37-D on Thursday night. Around 2.30 am, they drove to the Sector-17 ISBT to have tea. They parked their car and approached a tea stall on foot. Chima said as he placed an order for three cups of tea, five young men already standing near the stall absurdly took offence, believing that he was addressing them for the tea order. An altercation erupted and despite him clarifying that the order was made to the stall owner and not them, they got aggressive, Chima alleged. 'Enraged, they started hitting us,' the complainant stated. During the scuffle, one of the attackers allegedly retrieved a metallic 'plate-like' object from a grey Hyundai Santro car parked nearby and used it to assault the victims. The others rained punches and kicks on the three friends. Chima suffered injuries to the left eye and the back of the head. His friend Kartik sustained serious injuries, including broken front teeth, and wounds on his head and eye. Ashutosh also sustained injuries above the left eye. Before police could arrive, the assailants fled the scene in the Santro. The victims were transported to GMSH, Sector 16, for medical treatment by a patrolling police team. On Chima's complaint, an FIR was lodged under Sections 191 (2), 190, 115 (2) and 117 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the assailants at the Sector-17 police station. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the culprits.
