League leaders Shamrock Rovers capitalise on Waterford defensive errors
Shamrock Rovers were handed three points on a plate by a battling Waterford FC side as Stephen Bradley's side capitalised on two huge errors that gave the league leaders all three points from this SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division clash at the RSC. After a brilliant Padraig Amond header had put the hosts in front inside ten minutes, the home side were the architects of their own downfall as they were undone by goals from Rory Gaffney, Michael Noonan, and Graham Burke – the latter two goals were defensive errors It was a header of quality that gave the hosts the lead on ten minutes. Ryan Burke found space for himself out on the left before putting in a wonderful ball that saw Amond get in front of his marker to flick an unstoppable header to the roof of the net from 12 yards. Stephen McMullan denied the Hoops a certain equalising goal on 23 minutes when Josh Honohan played a super ball over the top that sent Aaron Greene clear straight on goal, but the netminder saved at the feet of the attacker as he tried to take the ball around him. Rovers were celebrating a leveller just two minutes later. Adam Matthews played a long throw into the right-hand corner that saw Greene send in a first-time cross for Gaffney, and he applied a neat right-footed finish past the helpless McMullan. It took some more heroic goalkeeping from McMullan to deny the visitors the lead goal on 36 minutes when Jack Byrne swung over a right-wing cross that picked out the run of Honohan, and after his header was superbly kept out, Gaffney struck the outside of the post with the rebound. Rovers were then gifted the lead on 76 minutes. Blues keeper McMullan, who was having a top display for the hosts up to this point, explicably played a clearance straight to Noonan, who was only on the field seven minutes, and with his first touch, he couldn't believe his luck as he guided the ball to an empty net from outside the penalty area. A third goal followed for the tabletoppers deep into second-half injury-time when Honohan, on the week that he was called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad, dispossessed Navajo Bakboord before releasing Graham Burke, who beat the offside trap, to finish past McMullan. Waterford FC: McMullan; Horton, Radkowski (Bakbooard 60), Leahy, Burke; Olayinka (Pouwels 90), McMenamy (McDonald 60), White, Glenfield; Lonergan, Amond. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; Honohan, Grace, Lopes, Matthews; Nugent (J O'Sullivan 69), O'Neill (Healy 69), Byrne, C O'Sullivan; Greene (Barrett 87), Gaffney (Noonan 69). Attendance: 3321

Gaffney and Graham on the double as Dublin U20s catch champions Offaly
Ollie Gaffney and Callum Graham struck a brace of goals apiece as Dublin dumped out Leinster and All-Ireland U-20 HC holders Offaly. The Dubs lost both of their Tier 1 group games but have bounced back impressively to secure a May 14 Leinster semi-final clash with Galway. They took out Antrim at the preliminary quarter-final stage and overcame a slow start in neutral Newbridge before coming good in a storming second-half against Offaly. In what was a repeat of last year's final, Offaly led by 0-8 to 0-3 approaching half-time, thanks in part to six points from free-taker Adam Screeney. But Graham's first goal for Dublin two minutes before the interval gave them a vital lifeline and inspired their best form. Dublin now trailed by just 1-3 to 0-9 at half-time and were back on level terms shortly after the restart when Gaffney capitalised on a free taken short with a clever goal. Graham collected the sliotar and spun away from his man with a burst of pace for his second and Dublin's third goal in the 38th minute, 3-4 to 0-11. Offaly offered little in response with David Lucey marshalling the Dublin defence and helping to hold Screeney scoreless from play. Rising senior star Screeney is just back from a troublesome groin injury and did register eight points in all from frees. Fellow Offaly senior Dan Ravenhill drilled four points also but they needed a goal and it never arrived. Dublin seniors Conal O Riain and Brendan Kenny both came strongly into the game while three points in a row from Gaffney, Kenny and free-taker Daniel O'Kelly left six in it. Gaffney capitalised on a long delivery in the 57th minute to hit Dublin's fourth goal, turning a three-point half-time deficit into a seven-point win. Meanwhile, Laois scored a 1-24 to 1-18 win over Wexford to set up a May 14 semi-final against Kilkenny. Ben Deegan's 10-point haul, nine of which came from placed balls, was crucial as the side that finished bottom of their Tier 1 group scored a landmark win. Wexford must have fancied their chances after opening a 0-6 to 0-3 lead initially but Laois were quickly back on level terms at 0-6 apiece before pulling decisively clear. Laois reeled off seven points in a row in the second quarter of the game, thanks in part to four Deegan points and two from Ruardhri Kavanagh, to open up a 0-14 to 0-7 lead. But three Simon Roche points and a Conor Fanning goal amounted to a strong Wexford response before half-time and Laois led by just 0-15 to 1-11 at the break. Wexford would have the significant wind behind them in the second-half. But they couldn't use it to their advantage and only added seven second-half points with just two of those coming from play. Laois netted through Justin Duggan, a low shot that fortunately found the net, to move five clear in the 35th minute and never looked back. Ben and Ross Deegan continued to pick off the points, along with Eoghan Cuddy and Duggan, to score a memorable win.

Harcourt hotel group bookings triple for British Open in Antrim following McIlroy's Masters win
Harcourt Developments, a hotel group founded by Donegal-born developer Pat Doherty, is seeing the benefits of 'McIlroymania' already with a 'threefold increase' in bookings for the British Open golf championship at Royal Portrush in Co Antrim in the two weeks after the Irish golfer's US Masters win. The Open takes place between July 17th and July 20th. 'In the two weeks after Rory had achieved his great success we saw a three-fold increase in bookings‚' said the hotel group's chief operating officer Clement Gaffney. While the group's Redcastle Hotel had an existing corporate booking for all of its rooms he said there was a surge in bookings at its other hotels in Ulster. ' Rory has shone great light on Ulster, and on the Open, which benefits the entire region. It has been fantastic, it has been very positive since Rory won.' Even before the McIlroy's successes the Harcourt Collection of hotels had a 'buoyant start to the year', seeing group revenues rise by 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 over the same period last year. READ MORE The group's Ulster-based properties Lough Eske Castle, Redcastle Hotel and Spa, and Titanic Hotel Belfast, have been 'standout performers', the company said with 16 per cent revenue growth year-on-year in the first three months of the year. 100 days of Trump: 'It's like The Karate Kid, tax on, tax off, tariffs on, tariffs off' Listen | 42:49 Hospitality industry groups have recently questioned tourism figures released by the Central Statistics office (CSO) showing significant reductions in spending and tourists in Ireland, with industry chiefs set to meet with the national statistics office on the matter. 'I've been following it with great interest,' the Harcourt chief operating officer said, but noted their hotels hadn't seen any reductions in visitors to their properties. Instead, he said, 'our hotels, our bed nights, our revenue, our rooms occupied, our occupancy, and rates, they have all shown very stable extended growth'. Despite concerns that the number of tourists coming to Ireland could be affected by US tariffs and global economic uncertainty, Mr Gaffney said the hotel group was 'not seeing a drop-off in the number of US tourists coming to Ireland', with North American guests expected to account for more than 60 per cent of stays during the summer. Instead, they are 'seeing very nice steady growth – recent growth - in Canadian business at our Caribbean property', Carlisle Bay in Antigua, as the country's tourism to its southern neighbour cools. The group recently announced a planned €5 million upgrade of its five-star Lough Eske Castle hotel in Co Donegal which grew its room count by 28 per cent. This investment, Mr Gaffney said, has returned a 23 per cent growth in revenue for the hotel in the first quarter. There is more investment to come, Mr Gaffney said, with Harcourt Developments set to commence construction of a 155-bed four star hotel in Liverpool and are looking at 'further development opportunities' in Belfast near their existing Titanic Hotel. He said the Titanic Hotel in Belfast was 'trading at a very high occupancy on a consistent basis, which is a great achievement. What we want to do now is unlock further development in Belfast to capitalise and build on that'.
