Conference League qualifiers: Shamrock Rovers outclass St Joseph's in Gibraltar
Rory Gaffney, Danny Mandroiu, John McGovern and Jack Byrne all grabbed goals at Europa Point Stadium in Gibraltar as

began their
Uefa Conference League
campaign with a convincing second round qualifier first leg victory over St Joseph's.
Looking to make a big splash in the competition after reaching last season's knockout rounds, Rovers came under some early pressure when a header by Manuel Sanchez, better known as Manolin, from an Alvaro Rey free-kick forced a save from goalkeeper Ed McGinty.
Yet McGinty's opposite number Bradley Banda produced a point-blank stop to deny Gaffney from close-range on 12 minutes, before the Galway native found himself in space moments later and proceeded to lift the ball beyond the reach of the Joseph's netminder for the opening goal.
This offered the Hoops a strong platform in warm conditions at a ground that serves as the home venue for Gibraltar's national rugby team.

Joseph's overcame NIFL Premiership outfit Cliftonville 5-4 on aggregate in the first round, but with their midfielder Facu Alvarez firing marginally off-target with a shot from distance, Rovers brought a slender advantage into the interval.

Although Joseph's were close to equalising five minutes after the restart when Javi Paul headed wide of the mark from an Angel Martinez corner, Rovers almost doubled their cushion when Mandroiu curled narrowly past the target at the opposite end.
However, like Gaffney before him, Mandroiu eventually got his name on the scoresheet. After Josh Honohan's strike was turned away by Banda, the former Bohemians and Lincoln City star unleashed a follow-up effort that took a wicked deflection on its way into the net.
This left the Hoops in a commanding position and despite the play briefly being halted for a second-half water break,
Stephen Bradley
's men continued to turn on the style when the action resumed.
Recent recruit McGovern (a Tailteann Cup winner with
Down
last year) was introduced inside the final quarter for his European debut, marking the occasion by almost immediately adding Rovers' third goal on 73 minutes.
His fellow substitute Byrne also got in on the scoring act just two minutes later with a superb finish from outside the box, securing a four-goal lead for the Dubliner's ahead of the return leg in Tallaght next Thursday.

‘We've no doubt about him, he seems a really a good guy' – Stephen Bradley has no attitude concerns about Connor Malley
Sligo Rovers boss John Russell described Malley as the 'most complete midfielder in the country' last October but their relationship soured after the Bit'O'Red knocked back winter approaches from Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne for a player that had a year remaining on his contract. He has made little or no impression this year amid murmurs of behind the scenes unrest that entered the public domain when Russell suggested that the player had been left out of the squad for a game with the Hoops because of how he had trained and conducted himself. Malley's last league appearance was a brief cameo against Bohemians on May 10 and with the writing on the wall for him at The Showgrounds, Bradley moved to arrange a loan deal until the end of the season that will allow the ex-Middlesbrough trainee to effectively audition at a club that was prepared to pay a significant five-figure sum for his services at the end of last term. Bradley says a positive first conversation with the 25-year-old and references from other people who have encountered him during his career convinced him that it was worth pursuing a deal. Shamrock Rovers eye league phase ahead of St Joseph's procession
Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley is targeting another long run in the UEFA Conference League as they look set to book a place in the third qualifying round on Thursday night. The Hoops take on St Joseph's in the second leg of round two in what is expected to be a formality given their 4-0 advantage from the meeting in Gibraltar. Ballkani of Kosovo are likely to await in the third round as they hold a two-goal lead over Malta's Floriana, with a play-off for the league phase then on offer for the winning side. Bradley is hoping to follow up on last year's run to the knockout rounds which ended in a heart-breaking loss to Molde. He said: "We can't take for granted what this team has done throughout the years, but it should be the aim for every League of Ireland team [to qualify for the league phase every year]. We want to keep pushing the boundaries, you want to keep getting better and in order to do that, you've got to try to go deep in Europe. It is definitely our aim this year. Can we go and achieve that again? "It isn't just from our point of view, I think a lot of smaller nations around Europe are really thriving in this competition. "You also see Chelsea win it last year and they're in Champions League now so the effect it has on all teams around Europe is massive. For us it opens pathways and doors that are realistic. We've got to keep striving to be better and going deep in this competition is definitely one of our aims." The Tallaght side may rest some players for the game against St Joseph's but there is a chance their league match with Derry City on Sunday will not take place. If Ballkani progress, as well as FC Prishtina, the Hoops will be back in action next Tuesday in Kosovo rather than Thursday, meaning the Premier Division clash must be deferred. Bradley said: "We have just got to go and win the game on Thursday, that has to be our approach. That's how we are built, that's how we're made. That's what we try and do so nothing changes. "We've got to forget about last Thursday and just focus on winning the game and that will be the aim in the second leg. "It's important for the tie but also for our coefficient. We can't underestimate that going forward. The more games you win the better it gets, it really important for the league as a whole. That's our aim in this game. "You have to try and get the balance right of freshness, but you also want to keep people sharp as well, so it will play a part in the team selection. "We can't control other results and what's going to happen regarding Sunday. Either way, we'll be ready to play." With no injuries and John McGovern and Connor Malley arriving this window, it could be said the squad Bradley has at his disposal is as strong as its ever been. They are set to compete for a double at home as well as their crunch European matches. "We've had to work extremely hard throughout the years to get to this point," Bradley stated. "I like where the squad is. It's in a really good place, there is a real competition for places and everybody is ready to play which is nice."
