Ludhiana: Administrative delay in payment disbursement hits ration vendors
Ration depot holders in Ludhiana are facing financial distress due to a prolonged delay in receiving their commission for the April–June wheat distribution quarter. The payment, usually credited within 10 to 15 days after a quarter ends, has not been released since June. With the free wheat distribution for the July–September quarter already underway, depot holders say they are being forced to bear operational costs from their own pockets. (HT Photo) With the free wheat distribution for the July–September quarter already underway, depot holders say they are being forced to bear operational costs from their own pockets. Echoing his concern, Gagandeep Singh, a local depot holder, said, 'We usually get our commission soon after the distribution ends. This payment helps cover unloading charges, labour, stationery, and electricity bills for the next distribution. But the department has not cleared our previous dues, leaving us to spend from our own pockets for the ongoing distribution.' Karamjit Singh Arechha, national assistant secretary and state president of the All India Fair Price Shop Dealers Federation, called the situation unprecedented. 'We are asking for our own hard-earned money. The commission of ₹90 per quintal is already inadequate. On top of that, over two lakh beneficiaries in the district have been removed from the list for not completing eKYC, cutting into our already thin earnings,' he said. For some, the delay is hitting harder. Manpreet Kaur, a widowed depot holder from Doraha, said, 'The commission is my household's only income. This is the festival season, and the delay has made it difficult for us to sustain.' Meanwhile, officials from the district food and civil supplies department have attributed the delay to the introduction of a new central government payment module, 'Sparsh'. This requires uploading updated data of ration depot holders, including their email IDs and bank details. Since we are not well-versed with the intricacies of this new module and it has been plagued with glitches, the process has been delayed. We will be submitting the bills for this quarter through 'Sparsh' to the state treasury department next week, which should facilitate the payments. Only after that will the situation regarding pending payments become clearer. District food supplies controller (Ludhiana West) Sartaaj Singh Cheema said, 'We have raised the issue with higher authorities and are making efforts to clear the payments at the earliest.'

Indian Army FT edge past ten men Tribhuvan Army FC by a solitary goal
The match was tough and very tight. There was not much of difference between the two. Solitary goal by P Christopher Kamei ensured Indian Army FT go past a resilient ten-man Tribhuvan Army FC in a Group C fixture of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup played at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Tuesday. This was their first win of the tournament. Tribhuvan Army FC finished their Durand Cup campaign with one point from three matches while Indian Army has three points from two matches. Gagandeep Singh started in goal for Indian Army FT in place of the suspended Sayad bin Abdul Kadir as Head Coach Manish Wahi gave starts to Abhishekh Shankar Powar and Wangden Tamang in place of Shubham Rana and Samir Murmu while Tribhuvan Army FC Head Coach Meghraj K.C also made three changes for their final group game, bringing in Niraj Chaudhary, Anil Bomjan and Shrijan Dani in place of Aviskar Khadka, George Prince Karki and Niranjan Dhami. Tribhuavan Army started the match on the front foot controlling the possession and pace of the game and created the first real chance of the game with Gagandeep Singh palming away Gillespye Jung Karki's header to safety. Indian Army side started to settle into their rhythm and showed more control in possession and created chances of their own, taking the lead in the 21st minute. Wangden Tamang found P. Christopher Kamei on the edge of the box with a cross from the left wing who controlled the ball with his left foot and with a precise low shot, the experienced midfielder found the bottom corner past the diving goalkeeper. Troubles mounted for the side from Nepal as they were reduced to 10 men in the 29th minute as goalkeeper Bikash Kuthu was shown a straight red card for a reckless foul on Liton Shil outside the penalty box while trying to stop the striker who ran free from the defence and had also rounded the keeper. The resultant free kick taken by the goal scorer Christopher Kamei hit the crossbar. The Nepali Army side showed character even with a man down as they continued to press forward in search of the equaliser. The forwards were able to find some good positions in the danger area but they were denied by a combination of some solid defending and a couple of saves by the Indian Army side as the scores remained the same into the break. Indian Army continued to dominate possession from the restart but were unable to make use of their man advantage as Tribhuvan Army showed some resilience in defence, making it hard for the Indian Army attackers to score their second. They were also wasteful in front of goal with Liton Shil missing as many as three chances to score. On the other end, the Nepal side who were playing on the counter attack missed a golden opportunity to level the scores. Disanta Rai failed to divert a cross from the left wing into an open goal as the substitute miscued his shot. Moments earlier Captain Gillespye Karki was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner kick with the goalkeeper rooted to his spot. Tribhuvan Army looked dangerous every time on the counter attacks, but were not clinical in the final third. In the end, Christopher Kamei's first half strike was enough to secure their first win of the tournament and secure three points. The suspect, identified as Gagandeep Singh of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village, currently residing at Gulmarg Avenue in Amritsar, was apprehended early Saturday morning. Digital tracking and technical surveillance, with support from Instagram's law enforcement team, helped trace the IP address and login credentials linked to the threatening account. 'During inspection of the accused's mobile phone, the Instagram account was found to be active and logged in. During questioning, the suspect claimed the comment was just a joke,' the SSP added. No direct connection has yet been established with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is currently incarcerated in Assam's Silchar Jail, but cops are continuing investigation to uncover any potential link. Man held from Punjabs Amritsar for threatening Congress MP Randhawas son
Chandigarh, Aug 2 (PTI) A man was arrested from Punjab's Amritsar for allegedly threatening Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa's son, police on Saturday said. The preliminary probe, however, revealed no link with any gangster in the matter, they said. The accused, identified as Gagandeep Singh, made the threatening comments, police said. The senior Congress leader had on Friday alleged that jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria has threatened to kill his son. Batala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir said Gagandeep Singh hails from this city but was currently staying in Amritsar. The accused had made some objectionable and threatening comment on an Instagram post of Randhawa's son Udhayveer Singh. After taking up the matter with the Instagram authorities, it was found that the objectionable comments were made from Gagandeep's account, the SSP told reporters reporters in Batala. The accused was arrested from Amritsar, he said. The preliminary probe revealed that there was no link with any gangster in this case, said police, adding that 'it was an act of mischief". The SSP, however, said that this matter would be thoroughly investigated. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act, police said. Randhawa had said on Friday that Bhagwanpuria has threatened to kill his son. 'One of my associates met my son and within one hour of leaving, he was fired upon," he said in a post on X. The Congress leader had alleged that Bhagwanpuria was threatening people even from inside prison. The MP's associate had also stated that he too received one such call. Batala Police wrote to the jail authorities in Silchar, Assam, to have effective surveillance on Bhagwanpuria, the SSP said. Earlier in March, Bhagwanpuria was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the PIT-NDPS Act and shifted from the Central Jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. The gangster, who faces several other cases, was already in the custody of Punjab Police in the 2022 singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case.
