Sabah PKR Youth say UMS students crossed the line
Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: 'Such actions not only disrespect the principles of mature and civilised discourse but also contradict the spirit and long history of the PM's struggle against corruption and abuse of power since the 1998 era,' said AMK Sabah Information Chief Mohd Nur Hilmie Milus. - Pic for illustration only. Kota Kinabalu: Angkatan Muda Keadilan Sabah condemned the burning of a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during Saturday's Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, allegedly by some Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students. They said while they back any public movement fighting for integrity, transparency and the eradication of corruption, they reject the controversial act. 'Such actions not only disrespect the principles of mature and civilised discourse but also contradict the spirit and long history of the PM's struggle against corruption and abuse of power since the 1998 era,' said AMK Sabah Information Chief Mohd Nur Hilmie Milus, in a statement, Sunday. He said the Prime Minister has been among the most consistent, firm and courageous political figures in combating the culture of corruption, not just in speeches but through various institutional reforms and fiscal transparency policies currently being implemented under the Madani Unity Government. 'We believe that any form of public pressure should be conducted in a measured, factual and constructive manner, not by ridiculing symbols of leaders who are driving real change in the country's administration,' he added. He said AMK Sabah remains committed to being a progressive voice for youths, advocating against corruption and institutional reform, but through principled and wise approaches rather than street rhetoric that plays with symbols revered by people. Advertisement 'We fight corruption, not create new enemies,' Mohd Nur Hilmie said, pointing out their stance on building a just and clean Malaysia through constructive means. In their statement on Friday, the students said they were glad over the unprecedented police approval for their Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally the following day. They said Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda had advised that their rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group said. The rally began at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands included firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms, suspension of individuals accused of corruption and on appointments to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah post. Meanwhile, another group of students, Gammas, alarmed over the police greenlight to the Gempur Rasuah group despite one of their demands clearly touching on the prohibited 3Rs (Race, Religion and institution of Rulers/TYT) decided to hold theirs supporting the state government. However, it was not known whether when applying for permission the Gempur Rasuah group had withheld from police knowledge that the TYT institution was also among their grievances. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rival groups again hold rallies
Published on: Sunday, June 22, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 22, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus, Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Demonstrators rally outside Center Point shopping mall. Kota Kinabalu: The Gerakan Anak Muda dan Mahasiswa Anak Sabah (Gammas) reaffirmed its strong support for the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, citing numerous contributions to the state's development and the welfare of youth and students. Organizer Noridi @ Noraidi Maya said Gammas members, particularly students, have directly benefited from initiatives introduced under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Pakatan Harapan (GRS-PH) government. 'We support Hajiji's leadership because he has brought significant change and progress to Sabah. "Students have received various forms of assistance such as the Sentosa aid (RM300), Budi aid (RM1,500–RM2,000), Subfly travel ticket subsidies, scholarships, and laptop assistance,' Noridi said during a peaceful rally at Taman Chong Thien Vun, Saturday. He also thanked Hajiji for thwarting an alleged cartel that attempted to monopolise Sabah's mineral resources. Gammas urged all parties to stop politicising the ongoing case involving mineral licences in Sabah, particularly those linked to the cartel. The group said investigations should be left to the proper authorities such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police. Advertisement Noridi also called on the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of a Political Funding Act to prevent future cases of corruption linked to political donations or campaign financing. 'We don't want good politicians to be dragged into corruption cases simply because they're trying to raise funds to help their constituents. "Many rural communities turn to their elected representatives for help during emergencies like death, fires, and floods. The absence of clear laws on political donations opens the door to abuse,' he said. Commenting on longstanding issues such as water, electricity, and roads in Sabah, Noridi said these are legacy problems that should not be overly politicised. 'We urge the public to support the government's development plans rather than use these issues to sow division,' said Noridi. Meanwhile, hundreds of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students, together with youth groups and civil society organisations, marched through the streets of the city centre, Saturday, in a demonstration known as Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0. President of Suara Mahasiswa Sabah Fadhil Kasim said the protest called for government accountability, stronger anti-corruption reforms and urgent resolution to long-standing infrastructure issues affecting the campus. The march began at Suria Sabah and moved through Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu, Anjung Kinabalu, Centre Point, and BKK, before concluding at Lintasan Deasoka on Gaya Street. Despite persistent rain, the crowd remained spirited, chanting and holding up handmade banners throughout the two-hour procession. He condemned the ongoing water supply crisis at UMS. 'We have endured long enough without water. This problem has gone on for years,' he said. Fadhil criticised the explanation by the Sabah State Water Department, which attributed the issue to a misunderstanding. 'They say it's a misunderstanding, but is it a misunderstanding when students can't shower for days and have to collect rainwater? Is that acceptable? No!' he said. The student body again demanded that UMS initiate legal action against the Sabah State Water Department, dismissing the university's claim that it could not sue due to 'government-to-government' protocol. He also called for reform of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), urging for it to become an independent body with bipartisan parliamentary oversight. 'We want the MACC to be a truly independent agency, as promised in election manifestos. But today, that promise has not been fulfilled.' He said while the rally remained peaceful, tensions briefly rose when several unknown individuals appeared with banners claiming they had been paid to participate. The protesters firmly denied the accusation. 'For the first time, we received a written response from the District Police Chief allowing this gathering,' he said, who praised the cooperation shown by police enforcement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Counter rally to clash with anti-graft student protest on Sabah governor's birthday tomorrow
KOTA KINABALU, June 20 — A new pro-government youth movement is set to take to the streets of Kota Kinabalu this weekend to counter the Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 anti-graft rally. The Gerakan Anak Muda dan Mahasiswa Anak Sabah (Gammas) has announced its intention to hold a peaceful assembly on Gaya Street, explicitly to counter what it calls the 'misrepresentation' by the student activist group Suara Mahasiswa UMS, which is organising Gempur. 'The purpose of this gathering is not to rival the anti-corruption rally 2.0 organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, but rather to clarify to the public that the majority of students at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) do not support the rally organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS,' they said in a statement today. While the Suara Mahasiswa protest is focused on government accountability and alleged mismanagement of funds, Gammas said they will be demonstrating in support of the state leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the GRS-PH coalition government. 'The main objectives of the gathering is to express support for our chief minister and the GRS-PH government to continue leading Sabah, as they have shown strong commitment to student and youth welfare,' they said. They outlined several benefits such as the Sentosa one-off RM300 assistance for students studying in Sabah, the Budi programme offering RM1,500–2,000 in cash aid for qualified tertiary education students, the Subfly flight ticket subsidy programme, public scholarships amounting to RM50 million and laptop assistance among others. The group also voiced strong support for the monarchical institution in Sabah, claiming it is a unifying force in a multicultural state and criticising what it sees as attempts by Peninsular-based political actors to undermine it. They said they submitted their notice of the rally to the Kota Kinabalu police on June 16. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally was given the greenlight by police on June 18. They had announced their rally last month. The rally is expected to begin on Saturday at 1.00pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands include action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms for the anti-corruption commission and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. The rallies coincide with the 74th official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri tomorrow morning.

Peaceful rally in support of Sabah Government set for this weekend
Published on: Friday, June 20, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - Getty Images/iStockphoto KOTA KINABALU: A peaceful assembly in support of the Sabah Government will be held at Jalan Gaya on June 21 and 22, starting at 2pm. The organisers, Gerakan Anak Muda dan Mahasiswa Anak Sabah (Gammas), confirmed they submitted a notice to Kota Kinabalu police headquarters on June 16. Advertisement Despite reported objections from several quarters, the organisers said the gathering will proceed as planned. Gammas clarified the assembly is not meant to counter the Suara Mahasiswa UMS anti-corruption protest, but to show that most UMS students do not support that movement. The event aims to support the GRS-PH government, highlight youth-targeted assistance programmes, defend Sabah's constitutional monarchy, and urge investigations into alleged rural development fund misappropriation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
