Kota Kinabalu: Angkatan Muda Keadilan Sabah condemned the burning of a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during Saturday's Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, allegedly by some Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students. They said while they back any public movement fighting for integrity, transparency and the eradication of corruption, they reject the controversial act. 'Such actions not only disrespect the principles of mature and civilised discourse but also contradict the spirit and long history of the PM's struggle against corruption and abuse of power since the 1998 era,' said AMK Sabah Information Chief Mohd Nur Hilmie Milus, in a statement, Sunday. He said the Prime Minister has been among the most consistent, firm and courageous political figures in combating the culture of corruption, not just in speeches but through various institutional reforms and fiscal transparency policies currently being implemented under the Madani Unity Government. 'We believe that any form of public pressure should be conducted in a measured, factual and constructive manner, not by ridiculing symbols of leaders who are driving real change in the country's administration,' he added. He said AMK Sabah remains committed to being a progressive voice for youths, advocating against corruption and institutional reform, but through principled and wise approaches rather than street rhetoric that plays with symbols revered by people.
Advertisement 'We fight corruption, not create new enemies,' Mohd Nur Hilmie said, pointing out their stance on building a just and clean Malaysia through constructive means. In their statement on Friday, the students said they were glad over the unprecedented police approval for their Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally the following day. They said Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda had advised that their rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group said. The rally began at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands included firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms, suspension of individuals accused of corruption and on appointments to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah post. Meanwhile, another group of students, Gammas, alarmed over the police greenlight to the Gempur Rasuah group despite one of their demands clearly touching on the prohibited 3Rs (Race, Religion and institution of Rulers/TYT) decided to hold theirs supporting the state government. Saifuddin: New IGP appointment meets all merit, eligibility criteria
KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has met all merit and eligibility criteria set by the Police Force Commission. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said there were six established criteria for the appointment of an IGP. "The appointment of the new IGP has fulfilled all merit and eligibility requirements set," he said in a parliamentary written reply. He was responding to Dr Abd Ghani Ahmad (PN-Jerlun), who questioned whether the appointment was based on merit and to what extent the merit of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP), who would also have been considered for the post, was taken into account. Among the conditions are that the IGP must be a senior police officer of Commissioner of Police (CP) rank or above, have an excellent service record, pass an integrity screening by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and be free of disciplinary action. Saifuddin added that the list of candidates must also be endorsed by the Police Force Commission and submitted for the consent and approval of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in accordance with Clauses 4 and 5, Article 140 of the Federal Constitution. Mohd Khalid was appointed IGP on June 23, succeeding Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, whose term ended on June 22. Over his career, he has served in various senior roles both domestically and abroad, including as deputy director of Special Branch I at federal police and as Security Liaison Officer in London, United Kingdom. He was promoted to director of Special Branch on April 10, 2023, and retired on April 8, 2025. However, his service was extended on a contract basis from that date, and he now continues with his new appointment as IGP.

Anwar: No compromise on those who leak intelligence
KUALA LUMPUR: Describing infiltration of intelligence bodies as a disaster for the country, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that there will be no cover-ups or compromise in cases affecting national security. The Prime Minister said the recent arrest of 10 individuals, including five senior Armed Forces officers, over suspected involvement in a smuggling syndicate was possible because graftbusters can now investigate without any interference. 'If you ask why these matters are only being exposed now, it's because the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has the freedom to investigate. 'That's the difference,' he told Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who had asked about recent incidents involving national security. Anwar said he has also informed the Armed Forces Chief to investigate the matter thoroughly, adding that this was also raised during an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 'I am waiting for the initial report, but we will not cover up anything. If we begin compromising on breaches within our intelligence apparatus, it would be disastrous for the country,' he said. On Aug 14, MACC remanded 10 individuals, including five senior officers of the Malaysian Armed Forces and two news portal journalists, believed to be involved in a smuggling syndicate operating in the south of the country. The Prime Minister said the government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption, especially within entrusted government machinery. He said preliminary investigations had identified the case as far back as 2020, but it only came to light this year after MACC was granted full access to investigate. While he warned against politicising the matter, Anwar also gave assurance that no one will be protected if found guilty of any misconduct. This includes cases like the recent attack on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son or the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir.

Defence budget tops RM5bil
KUALA LUMPUR: Defence expenditures have increased from RM3bil in 2020 to more than RM5bil last year to boost development and procurement efforts in light of geopolitical uncertainties, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'Recently, there was an increased military presence by the Philippines and the United States in the south of the Philippines, close to Sabah. 'I contacted Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr and according to him, it was due to China's offensive. 'This is definitely concerning and pushes us to improve our preparedness in Pulau Banggi and Sabah to defend ourselves,' Anwar said during Prime Minister Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat. He was responding to a question by Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) who asked about Malaysia's defence readiness amid global and regional geopolitical uncertainties. Anwar also said that government-to-government negotiations are conducted for defence procurement in various scenarios, which have demonstrated greater effectiveness, transparency and cost savings. He said the method allows for direct negotiations between the government and the producing country without the involvement of third parties, thereby avoiding delays and cost wastage due to high commission payments to agents. 'We immediately reduce costs when we negotiate directly with governments, as we eliminate the excessively high agent fees. 'That's why we've completed the procurement process now; in the past, orders would always stall,' he stated. To a supplementary question by Ahmad Fadhli on the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters or F/A-18 fighter jets, Anwar said any decision on the procurement of air defence assets would be made by the Air Force's technical committee. 'The committee will be fully responsible for determining its readiness; if it cannot be justified, we will not sign. 'This is clearly our policy,' Anwar said. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has reassured the Indian community that they have not been sidelined, with various forms of assistance channelled beyond allocations under the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra). Citing examples, he said the government had implemented a list of initiatives in 2022, including RM500mil allocated to the community under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme. Three years later, the allocation for STR to the community rose to nearly RM1bil, amounting to RM972mil in 2025, he said in response to S. Kesavan (PH-Sungai Siput), who asked about the government's focus on uplifting the socio-economic development of the Indian community.
