Ahmedabad police commissioner issues regulations for Ganesh Chaturthi
Ahmedabad: In view of the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, police commissioner G S Malik has issued strict new regulations for Ganesh idol height and immersion, effective from Tuesday until Sep 12.
The aim is to ensure a smooth festival, manage traffic, and prevent law-and-order issues during Ganesh Chaturthi (Aug 27) and Ganesh Visarjan (Sep 6).
Under the new rules, clay Ganesh idols, including their base, cannot exceed 9 feet in height. Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols are limited to a maximum height of 5 feet. This restriction applies to the making, selling, installing, and transporting of idols on public roads.
The notification explicitly prohibits immersing any idols in natural waterbodies like rivers and ponds. Instead, all clay and PoP idols must be immersed solely in artificial ponds created by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The notification states that there is a risk of disease spread due to pollution at the idol-making sites. The notification even banned leaving any kind of waste or leaving any idols openly on roads at the sites, and even abandoning broken or damaged idols in an unclaimed state was prohibited.
Furthermore, the use of toxic, chemical-laden colours that do not dissolve easily in water is prohibited. Idols also cannot feature symbols or signs that might offend religious sentiments.
