Last rites of Girija Vyas performed in Udaipur; Gehlot pays tribute
Udaipur: The funeral of former Union minister and senior Congress leader Girija Vyas took place in Udaipur Friday. Her nephew, Vivek Sharma, performed the last rites at Ashok Nagar Mokshdham following Vedic traditions, with 104 hymns recited. Vyas passed away Thursday around 7.15pm at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad. Her body was brought to Udaipur late at night and kept at her residence in Daityamagra for final respects Friday. On March 31, Dr Vyas was performing Gangaur puja at home when her scarf caught fire from a lamp. A worker at her home managed to help her, and she was taken to a private hospital in Udaipur. She was later referred to Ahmedabad, where her condition worsened due to 90% burns. Her brother, Gopal Sharma, mentioned that her health was initially improving but deteriorated again two days before her death on May 1. Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter expressing her grief at the death. "I am shocked due to the sudden demise of Girija Vyas after a month-long treatment following the fire tragedy happened with her. Her passing away is a loss for the Congress party, literature fraternity. Her contribution in social, political and education field will be remembered. My condolences to the bereaved family," Gandhi said in her letter. Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge in a post on X termed the death "extremely sad." "An intellectual politician, an influential orator and an able administrator, her demise is an irreparable loss to the Congress family," he said. She would have completed 79 in July. Former Speaker of the Assembly and senior Congress leader CP Joshi visited Vyas's home to offer floral tributes and comfort her brother. Former Congress Working Committee member and ex-MP from Udaipur, Raghuveer Singh Meena, along with his wife, former Salumbar MLA Basanti Meena, also paid their respects. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition in Rajasthan Assembly Tika Ram Jully participated in a meeting held ahead of the funeral procession. Udaipur BJP MP Mannalal Rawat visited Vyas's home to pay his last respects and placed flowers. Dr Rawat expressed that her passing is a significant loss to the political arena.

Jaipur/Udaipur: Former Union minister and prominent Dr Girija Vyas passed away Thursday evening at a hospital in Ahmedabad following complications from burn injuries sustained during a Gangaur puja ceremony at her home in Udaipur in March. Vyas, who had been in intensive care for the past month, breathed her last at 7:30pm with her brother Gopal Krishna Sharma and other family members by her side. Her body will be transported to her residence in Dethi Magri, Udaipur, where it will lie in state for public prayers on May 2 from 10am to 12pm, followed by the last rites later that day. A four-time MP from Rajasthan and former president of the National Commission for Women of India , Vyas was known for her multifaceted career spanning politics, literature and social service. Born in Nathdwara, she served as the Union minister for housing and urban poverty alleviation and held several key positions within the Congress party. The news of her death prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the political spectrum. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot described her death as an "irreplaceable loss," highlighting her significant contributions to education, politics and social service. "Her untimely demise due to an accident is a great shock to us all," Gehlot wrote on 'X'. Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also expressed his deep sorrow at her passing. Sharma stated that Vyas had dedicated her life to public service. "She will always be remembered as a popular leader due to her gentle demeanour," the CM said. Beyond her political achievements, Vyas was an accomplished writer and poet. Her love for poetry and ghazals transcended political divides as she wrote several books, including 'Ethical Teachings of Bhagwat Gita and Bible', 'Philosophy of Shuddadvaita', 'Ahsaas', 'Seep, Samunder aur Moti' and 'Nostalgia'. From being Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief (Apr 1999 to Jan 2004) to president of All India Mahila Congress and chief whip of Congress Parliamentary Committee, Vyas held almost all important positions in her political career. Her penchant for writing ghazals and poems and fondness for literature earned her the post of editor of the AICC in-house magazine Sandesh and the chairperson of AICC's Vichar Vivhag. Her primary focus encompassed the advancement of underdeveloped regions in Rajasthan. She dedicated herself to improving the lives of disadvantaged communities, particularly the SCs, STs and minority groups. Veteran Congress leader Girija Vyas passes away
Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Girija Vyas, who had sustained burn injuries during a Gangaur puja ritual at her residence in Udaipur, died at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Thursday. She was 79. Ms. Vyas — a three-time former MP and two-time former MLA from Udaipur — sustained 90% burn injuries after her 'dupatta' (long scarf) caught fire during the puja ceremony on March 31. She was rushed to a private hospital in the city, from where she was later referred to Ahmedabad. The Congress leader succumbed to burn injuries during the treatment at Zydus Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening. The family sources said her body was being brought to Udaipur, where the funeral would be conducted on Friday. Ms. Vyas served as a Minister in both the State and Union governments and was also the president of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. She also served as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women. She contested her last election from the Udaipur City Assembly constituency in 2018, when she lost to Bharatiya Janata Party's Gulab Chand Kataria. Ms. Vyas began her political career as Udaipur District Congress chief in 1977. She was a Minister in Rajasthan from 1985 to 1990 and was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991. She was the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government and later served as the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in the Manmohan Singh government from 2013 to 2014. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretaries Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal, and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot have condoled the death of Ms. Vyas. Mr. Kharge said in a post on X that Ms. Vyas had dedicated four decades to the Congress and public service in various constitutional and organisational roles. Mr. Gandhi said Ms. Vyas's contribution in the fields of education, social justice and especially women's empowerment had been extremely significant. 'Her departure is an irreparable loss for all of us,' he said.
