Newport man honoured by King had to sleep on A and E floor

60-year-old Darren Rice spent the night at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. Darren is a well-known Newport figure and helps clean up the city's canals through his unique hobby of magnet fishing. In an emotional post on Facebook Darren wrote: 'I've had about five hours sleep on the floor at the medical assessment unit at the Royal Gwent the staff are over worked they don't deserve the situation.' Darren Rice 60 with wife Gillian Rice 63 at King Charles III's Garden Party (Image: NQ) Darren was admitted to the hospital on Monday (May 26) to receive treatment for an infected cut after a nail went through his foot. He wasn't able to receive treatment until Tuesday morning on May 27. Speaking of the experience Darren said: 'It's not fair on the nurses the amount of people they go above and beyond for is unreal it's the system. 'People are in there for ten to twelve hours just to get through the system.' Darren's infected cut at A and E in The Royal Hospital (Image: Darren Rice) The Royal Gwent has a minor injuries unit and more serious A&E cases are sent to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran. A spokesman for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board said: 'We're very sorry to hear of Mr Rice's experience – this is certainly not the standard of care we aim to provide to our patients. 'Due to high numbers of unwell patients and delays to the flow of patients throughout our hospitals, this unfortunately means that some patients may be offered a chair if there are no hospital beds available. 'This is not an acceptable level of care and we are doing everything we can to improve the flow of patients throughout our hospitals and decrease the delays for urgent and emergency care. 'The Emergency Department extension at The Grange University Hospital, due to be completed later this year, will increase the capacity of the clinical area and provide a new, larger waiting area to improve the comfort and experience of patients who visit. 'We have also recruited additional Emergency Department Doctors to help meet demand and reduce delays, which should, in turn, reduce pressure across the entire urgent care system. 'We wish Mr Rice a speedy recovery and would urge him to contact us directly to discuss any concerns he may have around our services.'

Vernon Kay's 'honest' verdict on King Charles and royals after Buckingham Palace party

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Vernon Kay has shared his succinct opinion of King Charles and the rest of the Royal Family following a personal encounter. During a segment on his BBC Radio 2 programme, Vernon addressed a listener's anxiety about feeling like a "country bumpkin" at an upcoming Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. In the warmer months, the royals are known to hold three Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse as an opportunity to engage with members of the public acknowledged for their positive contributions. Vernon quickly shut the "bumpkin" notion down with some words of encouragement, explaining that they're "welcoming". He also revealed what the listener might expect if they met a member of the Royal Family. (Image: Jed Cullen/Dave Benett/Getty Ima) He reflected: "No, you won't! They're very welcoming in the back garden of Buckingham Palace. You'll have a fabulous day. The tea is absolutely delightful. The cakes are superb. "And if you get to bump into or shake hands with a member of the Royal Family, they are very, very gracious, very courteous, and right proper down to earth, I'll be honest with you." Last summer, Vernon, alongside his wife Tess Daly from Strictly Come Dancing, joined a roster of celebrities including Love Island's Maya Jama, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, action star Jason Statham, and The One Show's Roman Kemp at one such prestigious Garden Party. King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince Edward, and the Duchess of Gloucester were in attendance at the event, which was held to honour those working in the film, TV, radio, arts, and fashion industries. At the time, Buckingham Palace remarked: "From theatre to video games, publishing to design, museums and galleries to film sets and music studios, the creative industries, and the creators and organisations within them, bring happiness, prosperity and help shape the world around us." (Image: Getty Images) In a somewhat less regal snippet, Vernon was reportedly left mortified after encountering a surprising side of his wife's Strictly co-presenter, Claudia Winkleman's past, after digging up a clip from a 1996 interview where she chats about the art of flirting. Vernon revealed how, in one of Claudia's earliest TV gigs, she came on as a so-called "chat up expert" on Good Morning with Anne and Nick on BBC One and weighed in on various pick-up lines. Reflecting on modern dating, Vernon wistfully noted: "It's always difficult isn't it? These days it's all done on an app, which is kind of sad, takes the human element out of it, do you know what I mean? Just swiping." He claimed there was previously an "art" to chatting to "someone that you fancied". Vernon added that it was "difficult" before detailing how people would need to get "over that threshold" of "What can I say? What can I do?".

Harry and William's uncle leaves behind eye-watering amount in will after death aged 82 – but neither will get a penny

Both William and Harry attended their uncle's funeral in 2024 LEFT OUT Harry and William's uncle leaves behind eye-watering amount in will after death aged 82 – but neither will get a penny Prince William and Prince Harry's uncle left £1.5million in his will – but gave neither royal a penny. Lord Robert Fellowes passed almost the entirety of his massive estate to his wife after his death last July, The Sun can reveal. Both William, 42, and US-based Harry, 40, attended Lord Fellowes' memorial service in tiny Snettisham, Norfolk, last August. We revealed how they stood 'virtually back to back' at the event to mark the popular Baron's life, but still refused to talk to each other. Documents signed off by the High Court last week reveal Lord Fellowes left an estate worth £1,517,418, including a £4,000 deduction to pay costs and legal fees. Advertisement In his 2012 will, he passed £1,000 to a local hospice and £500 to St Mary's Church, where his memorial service was held. He also gave £5,000 to Eton College, where he was educated, and £1,000 to handyman Andrew Grange, who helped the couple at their Old Vicarage estate just miles away from royal retreat Sandringham. Yet there were no special gifts for either of his nephews, who have not been seen in the same room since the packed memorial event. The remainder of his estate was handed to his wife, who is Princess Diana's older sister. The life peer was also a long-time adviser to the princes' grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, serving in her private office from 1977. Kate greets family of young photographer who died of cancer months after pair met – as she dazzles Garden Party crowd He was the monarch's private secretary from 1990 to 1999, steering Her Majesty through the royal family's most turbulent period. Reverend Dan Tansley, who led his memorial service, told The Sun at the time: 'It was a lovely service and there were a lot of people who wanted to be there for someone who was really well-respected in the village. Advertisement 'It was only as I was greeting the congregation on the way out that Prince William was shaking my hand, and then very quickly after Prince Harry did too. 'It wasn't a tremendous shock William was there, as that was always a possibility but I suppose it was more of a surprise that Harry had come." 'I don't recollect them speaking to each other but there were a lot of family members and friends speaking to them. 'It would have meant a lot to Lord Robert to have them both at the service because I know both he and his auntie love them both very much.' Advertisement
