As South Africans experience a cold snap this week, Gauteng residents can expect conditions to get a little warmer this weekend. Gauteng Weather, a regional forecaster, on Monday warned residents in the province to brace for a cold snap midweek. The forecaster predicted that the chilly weather is expected to continue until the weekend. However, the South African Weather Service on Wednesday said fine and cool to warm conditions are expected in the province, though areas in the southwestern regions will be cold. Saturday: Milder day in store Saturday, 24 May 2025, promises to be a day of mostly clear skies with fine and cold to cool temperatures throughout Gauteng. In Johannesburg, the day will start with a cold morning temperature of 8°C, rising to a maximum of 18° by 12pm to 1pm. Temperatures will dip again to 14°C in the evening, but humidity will remain relatively average at around 40% to 55% throughout the day. According to the weather service, no rainfall is expected for the day, and wind speeds will be light, mainly coming from the southwest. Joburg residents can expect clear skies during the afternoon, ideal for outdoor activities or getting some sun. Pretoria will see similar conditions, with temperatures ranging from a low of 9°C in the early morning to a high of 20°C later in the day. In Johannesburg, temperatures will start at 9°C at 8am and peak at around 19°C in the afternoon. The wind will remain light and skies will remain mostly clear, although a few clouds may appear in the evening. Pretoria will experience mild conditions, with temperatures climbing to a maximum of 21°C. Similar to Joburg, the weather will be clear and calm throughout the day, with no chance of rain. The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the city of Johannesburg. Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices, things like heaters, braziers or paraffin stoves, not to leave them unattended while in use, so that we can be able to prevent fire incidents which might occur at home during this extremely cold temperatures. 'From our side as a city of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, together with our disaster management and monitoring teams, we remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city for any emergencies which might occur,' Mulaudzi said. Other parts of SA Saws warned of wet, windy, and cold to very cold conditions over western high-lying areas of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape and Free State, with a possibility of light snow along the high-lying mountain tops of Western Cape, Eastern Cape up to the Lesotho until Wednesday. 'Farmers and small stock farmers are advised to provide proper shelter, dry bedding, and energy-rich feed to protect their animals against these conditions'. Saws also warned of extremely high fire danger conditions expected over the Beaufort West Municipality of Western Cape, Thembelihle Municipality of Northern Cape and the extreme northwestern parts of Free State. 'Keep burning candles out of reach of young Children. Don't leave young Children unattended in a room with a lit candle, heater or paraffin stove 'Don't connect electricity illegally it's a dangerous to you, young children and those around you instead report any illegal connections in your area. Don't leave any heater unattended while in use it might cause fire at home,' Mulaudzi added. High alert Mulaudzi said they will be on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg together with different management monitoring teams. 'All 29 fire stations are on high alert to ensure that we effectively respond to all emergencies which might occur during this Cold Front.' Mulaudzi added that as the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services they will remain on high alert and monitor all seven regions of the city for any emergencies. The South African Weather Service has warned residents of Gauteng to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures starting Friday. The weather in the province is expected to become significantly colder as the weekend approaches. A preliminary forecast indicates a cold snap in Gauteng from Friday, as reported by regional forecaster Gauteng Weather. In Pretoria, temperatures are expected to reach a low of 7°C and a high of 19°C on Friday. For both Saturday and Sunday, temperatures are predicted to range between 16°C and 18°C. In Johannesburg, the forecast shows minimum temperatures dropping to 4°C with a high of 17°C on Friday. On Saturday, maximum temperatures are expected to fall to 14°C. The SA Weather Service has warned of damaging winds and waves in the coastal regions. 'Partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the south and eastern parts of RSA. Severe thunderstorms, Damaging wind and waves which can make navigation difficult. Small vessels taking on water and capsizing within a locality are expected along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and Port Edward.'
