What was it like to have Jayant Narlikar as a father? A daughter answers
1 2 3 4 5 6 Pune: Throughout their lives, the three Narlikar sisters — Geeta, Girija, and Leelavati — were often asked variations of this question: What is it like to have a famous father? On behalf of the three daughters of renowned astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar (86), who passed away on May 20, Geeta, a US-based biochemist, answered the question at Narlikar's memorial meeting organised by the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) on Tuesday. "If Baba were there, he might be thinking, 'Why are you doing this?' Speaking on behalf of all three sisters, I would say we have heard variations of these lines — 'Your father was a major influence on me when growing up', 'What is it like to have a famous father?' If it was not for these questions, occasional newspaper articles, and Baba's travels to accept an award, we would not have known the huge impact he had on the world of astrophysics or the scientific consciousness of Marathi and Indian society more broadly. This is because his behaviour at home was of a deeply engaging family man, not of someone flaunting fame," said Geeta. She spoke of how their father, together with mother Mangala Narlikar, a mathematician who passed away in 2023, were ahead of their time in society in raising three girls. "Looking back, we were influenced more by his actions than his words. We internalised the deep respect Baba showed for Aai and the freedom to make our choices in our careers and life partners. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo This was implicit in how they fostered our independence of thoughts and actions," said Geeta, while sharing several memories about the noted astrophysicist with the gathered audience. The memorial meeting was attended by renowned scientists such as Naresh Dadhich, Ajit Kembhavi, and Anil Kakodkar, among others. Geeta further spoke about her parents, saying they enjoyed the work they did and never thought of research and teaching as a chore. "It was energising for them. Baba's zest for life and his creativity were integral parts of his parenting. We see it now in reflection. This ranged from setting up puzzles for all of us to solve to telling us stories using characters we made up on the spot. We would make all kinds of characters and weave them into a story that was engaging, fascinating, and novel. This also ranged from making sure, as much as possible, to take the family with him on sabbatical trips, so we would experience what it meant to live in another country and be influenced by their culture. His ready laughter also resulted in happy tears at jokes he told or stories he recounted, and this is one of the most joyous memories of him. What it showed us is a father who loved to be happy, a father who was not stuck in the seriousness of his achievements," said Geeta. Narlikar also had a deep love for good food. "Some of you are also familiar with how much Baba loved good food," Geeta told the gathering, adding, "Every trip to other countries involved savouring local delicacies, from street food to gourmet meals. Even in his last few days, he made a request for a full English breakfast, a pot of biryani, and, of course, chocolates and mango with ice cream, living life to the fullest. His parenting, in collaboration with Aai, prepared us to meet the challenges of life and career with courage and an open mind, to enjoy the little things in life, and never take ourselves too seriously. Watch: Geeta Basra Recreates Harbhajan's Iconic Action Into A Meme-Worthy Moment
Last Updated: Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra scooped out some time to play backyard cricket. A clip featuring some moments from the game has now gone viral on social media. Legendary Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was spotted enjoying a light-hearted cricket session with his wife, actress Geeta Basra, amid the Indian Premier League (IPL). The power couple recently launched a 'fun, fiery, and relatable" chat show, 'Who is The Boss", on YouTube. While Harbhajan and Geeta are busy with the promotion, they scooped out some time to play backyard cricket. A clip featuring some moments from the game has now gone viral on social media. Harbhajan, who has more than 700 wickets under his belt, picked up the willow, with Geeta rolling her arms. She imitated Harbhajan's signature run-up– a moment that sparked loud cheers among the onlookers. The former Indian cricketer effortlessly scored a boundary before pulling off a six as the ball landed among the paparazzi. Harbhajan and Geeta recently announced their upcoming show via social media. 'We have played many roles in life – on the field, in films, and most importantly, as husband and wife! Now, it's time to bring all that love, laughter, and little chaos to your screens," the couple shared in a joint statement on Instagram. 'Who is The Boss?" will celebrate women who have sacrificed enough to support their cricketer-husbands. 'This idea was conceptualised years ago. People are always curious about what goes on behind closed doors, especially in the homes of these cricketers. Being a cricketer's wife myself, my main goal was to highlight the women behind these successful men," Geeta said at the launch event. Referring to the entertaining side of the show, Harbhajan said, 'I liked the concept very much. It's about bringing the wives to the forefront and couples sharing amazing facts and funny stories about themselves." 'We are strictly against controversies. We don't want to force anyone to come to our show and speak about something that's not good. It's all going to be happy and full of smiles," he added. While Harbhajan remains committed to his commentary duties in the ongoing IPL, Geeta will next be seen in movies like 'Mehr' and 'Awasthi vs Awasthi'. First Published: May 29, 2025, 16:21 IST

Gujarat woman fakes own death, kills man in plot inspired by 'Drishyam'
A 22-year-old married woman from Gujarat's Patan district has been arrested alongside her 21-year-old lover for allegedly murdering a man, dressing his corpse in her clothing, and setting it ablaze in a chilling plot inspired by the Bollywood thriller Drishyam, police said on Wednesday. Authorities recovered the half-burnt body near a pond in Jakhotra village late Tuesday. Initially mistaken for the woman due to the traditional skirt and anklets on the body, the victim was later confirmed to be Harjibhai Solanki, a 56-year-old nomadic resident of a neighbouring village. The accused, Geeta Ahir, and her lover Bharat Ahir, were apprehended hours later at Palanpur railway station, where they were allegedly preparing to board a train to Rajasthan. According to Patan's Superintendent of Police V. K. Nayi, Geeta devised the plan after watching Drishyam and its sequel, convincing her lover to help her stage her own death so they could elope. On the night of May 28, as her family slept, Geeta left home. Around the same time, Bharat allegedly picked up Solanki, strangled him at a remote location, and transported the body to the pond. There, the pair dressed the corpse in Geeta's clothes and doused it in petrol before setting it on fire. Family members discovered the charred remains and believed it to be Geeta. Their shock turned to horror when they realised the body belonged to a man. The plot unravelled swiftly. Acting on intelligence, police located the couple at the station and took them into custody. During interrogation, both confessed to the crime. Police have charged the duo with murder and criminal conspiracy. The case remains under investigation.

Geeta Samota becomes first CISF personnel to scale Mt Everest: Recited Hanuman Chalisa for strength
The pride of achieving an unprecedented feat is often beyond words. And for Geeta Samota, who has etched her name in history, a smile says it all. The 35-year-old Sub-Inspector recently became the first Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to scale Mount Everest in the 56 years since the force was established. Now back on the plains, Geeta opened up about her recent achievement during a visit to Delhi. Her daunting journey began on May 15, and was marked by avalanches, bone-numbing fatigue, emotional breakdowns and constant threat of danger. But when it culminated in the early hours of May 19, the moment spelt sheer triumph. 'I unfurled the Tiranga... uss ek moment mein jitni bhi thakaan thi, whatever struggles I had gone through, they felt worth it,' says Geeta who was born in a village in Rajasthan and is currently posted in Udaipur. 'No amount of training can fully prepare anyone for it. Jab aap itni unchai pe jate ho, tab har kadam pe lagta hai ki 'Kahin agla kadam mera last toh nahin',' she tells us, noting that the summit doesn't just test physical endurance but breaks and rebuilds human spirit. She adds, 'During the journey, I saw casualties; climbers who lost their lives during the expedition.' A post shared by CISF India (@official_cisf) In moments of self doubt, it was spirituality that lifted her spirit. 'Maine kam se kam 2,000 baar Hanuman Chalisa padhi hogi during the expedition. That gave me the strength to just keep going,' she reveals. In 2015, she became the first woman in CISF to complete the gruelling QRT (Quick Reaction Team) course. She recalls: 'My first expedition was Mt Elbrus (the highest mountain in Europe), which was a failure on the first attempt... I've never stopped since and have accomplished five peaks.' Now, with Everest behind her, Geeta's next goal is clear: conquer the final two peaks to complete the Seven Summits. But before she takes on the next mission, she says: 'It doesn't matter how unfathomable your dream is, if you trust yourself and have unbreakable faith, you will always achieve everything!'
